What I thought was an "Engine Electrical System" dash warning (in the Japanese Hieroglyphics) turns out to be a "Brake System" warning. I've noticed it's started to happen more often - usually comes on after I have been driving for a while. Once the engine is cut and restarted it disappears (System Check is OK) but will often come back sometime later. I've recently had the brake fluid bled and replaced and this hasn't eliminated the warning message. Is the first port of call a diagnostic test? Which systems, other than ABS, should I be paying attention to (UZZ32 with ABS/TRC)? Neil, do you have any suggestions as to what specific faults might be causing the warning?

Could be the TRC pump causing you the trouble as it did with mine, i had to replace the whole unit in my TT. I cant remember what codes i were getting, but was a ABS Code i dont think i got a TRC code error. although the TRC mastercylinder/pump was causing the trouble.

If it's just the 'brake system' warning then it could just be the fluid level sensor. If the level looks ok and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the braking ability then unclip the the cable to the sensor and see how you go.

Do ABS and TRC diagnostic. You will probably have error code 55.... Accumulator is low on pressure.

Jeff, if accumulator low in pressure then wouldn't the pump run continuously and bring up an ABS/TRC alarm?

| ABS diagnostic shows up error codes 55 and 56 (and then when I ran it again, 11 and 53 also!). Also shows a TRC 43 error. I checked the brake fluid reservoir, chokkas. Is the sensor connected to the cap prone to playing up? I'll try disconnecting this sensor but given the reservoir is full quite literally to the brim I doubt this is the cause.

The sensor has a magnetic switch which I think can play up. On the ABS/TRC unit, on the engine bay bulkhead in front of the driver, is it running on a regular basis i.e. every few seconds, does it squeak?

I'll have to check tomorrow Dave. Sounds as the possible causes are: a) brake fluid sensor (unlikely, as the reservoir is very full and warning is not the "Brake Fluid Low" but "Brake System") b) switch assembly pressure sensor Toyota Part No. 84220-24010 c) ABS accumulator (easy job to replace, expensive to buy at roughly $600!). We will see...

Accumulator price was about $300 ex Castle Hill Toyota in Sydney, email James Sloane (can't remember his email address) and mention that you are a member.

OK, I found out this morning if start the engine and pump the brake 10 - 15 times the dash displays both: 1. "ABS" warning 2. "Brake System" warning Both warnings disappeared the moment I stopped pumping the brake. Interestingly, the "Brake System" warning didn't appear while I was driving to work - it has started to appear about 10 minutes into every trip and can appear whether braking, accelerating or even crawling on the freeway. Dave, any way for me to check whether the accumulator is stuffed/leaking? I've read that the "sensor" which sits behind the ABS system is also prone to faults and ought be replaced when you get Brake or TRC warnings (eg TRC 43). They are $90 through James Sloane.

Jeff, if accumulator low in pressure then wouldn't the pump run continuously >>> Yes and bring up an ABS/TRC alarm?>>>> Not always It's the accumulator if you have 55, no if's or but's.

The alarm coming on after pumping the brakes a lot would be normal for the condition it's in. You could replace the switch if you want but if the pump is turning on/off then it's working ok. You definitely need a new accumulator though so bite the bullet and get a new one fitted asap because it's the brakes we're talking about here. You've also got a speed sensor for each wheel that will be getting to the end of its life so bank on spending money there in the not to distant future. Sorry about the bad news but you've got a beautiful car that, like women, have expensive tastes.

| As Dave says . Plus, in that vein, these cars are essentialy "Old Slappers", that need a bit of molly-coddling in their dottage!

At that price I'd ask around, also if anyone from your neck of woods is going to Neils' Easter do then they may be able to bring one back for you, just give them the dosh and a crate.

I'd say "that price" is pretty competitive Dave, it's through James Sloane who has given me heavily discounted prices on everything I have purchased from him so far. Where do you say they can be had for $300?

That price was from James Sloane but wouldn't include GST as it was for export which I'd have to pay at this end plus postage.

At that price it could be worthwhile o/hauling those accumulators. All I need is to know what nitrogen pressure to pump them up to. so if anyone could find out I'd be interested then I'd do a write-up of what to do.

The pressure is in the multiple thousands of PSI, it's not safe to do a backyard on it.

I know it's high just need to know how high. Mine stopped being any good with not much pressure left so there's probably no need to go the full pressure to get it working reasonably.

Well, I know 250psi is not enough and as that is the case, the equipment involved to get more that that into the cylinder safely negates the cost saving.

I have all the gear here at work but if you were to buy it all it would probably come to over $200 worth of fittings.
