Hi guys. Okay here's the update(I had started a thread on ALSC). The problem: Engine not idling Intermittently (though more consistantly lately.) Solutions: Injector cleaner - have run about 3 bottles through. everytime i do it comes good for about a week, then the problem comes back. I've changed the fuel filter, diagnosed that it is not the fuel pump controller, cleaned the idle control valve. I even took it to a mechanic (Gosh, no really!), but of course, the morning i drove it there, it was fine, all day it was fine, drove it home it was fine, next time i started it, it played up!
I have a full set of o-rings for the injectors, as i was going to get them cleaned, but i don't think that will help. Changed the 02 sensor, no difference. It runs really rich. Seems like it just snuffs the engine at idle, because it has too much fuel. So what do i do now?

Toyota Red stuff. Just did the water pump last week and had the radiator cleaned. Why do you ask? Also, where is the MAP sensor? Could it need a clean too?

if it feels like its misfiring when the problem comes up then i would look at plugs,Coil packs etc.its obviously not a fule problem as its runing rich.
A friend of mine recently had his injectors cleaned in his tarago van. The thing is now much harder to start and the injectors appear to leak under pressure. Looks like he will need to buy a new set.His mechanic said that the injector cleaning guy told him that it is quite common for the tarago van injectors to leak after they have been cleaned. Not happy jan!! Hope that the soarer ones aren't like that. I would stick ultrasonic cleaning. The tarago injectors were cleaned chemically

Changed the spark plugs to a set of NGK BKR6E (not iridium) at.8mm gap. I'd tried to start the car without any throttle before i changed the plugs, and when i pulled out the original plugs, the were very black, and had liquid (fuel) on the tips. It started, coughed and spluttered for a bit, and blew out thick smoke for a while, then came good. Then it played up again. So i've cleaned the idle control valve with carby cleaner more thoroughly than last time. It's okay now, but still not perfect. More help?

Even with my limited automotive knowledge I would agree with Mustafa that it isn't a fuel problem. All the symptoms you describe would indicate it is running horror rich (ie wet plugs, flooding at idle, lots of smoke). Then again that injector thing is weird, cleaning them makes it go better I mean.

Well, time for an update. A few weeks have gone by since i did the plugs and o2 sensor, and to my surprise, things have actually improved. The engine is idling as per normal and quite smooth, not blowing any more smoke than a rich factory tune will! Feels to have a little more poke (although it has been a bit colder up here in the hills the fast few days). I think the computer must have re-learned over the past few weeks, and all seems good now. I'll check the plugs in a few weeks to make sure all is well. Thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated.

Check you ECU my car was playing up for months going good and then bad and it was sending out errors about the throttle position system. But once the computer was changed it was smooth as ever. Just a thought. Good Luck

Tried the fuel pump ecu thing ages ago, and it's not that. Change the ecu? Sure! Anyone got a factory 5 speed ecu lying around they want to lend me...Not likely!!!
