I take it the con rod bent when trying to compress the water, thus fracturing the piston?

I've seen a 1JZ soarer with a blown head gasket at the auctions, the guy gets in, starts it and puts his foot straight to the floor. The thing coughs and splutters all the way to redline then starts missing heavily and stalls. Meanwhile people 5 metres away are covering their faces because of the steam..

Moral of the story, 1JZ = tough
