I'm having some problems with my volume and tone control, affects all media, All works fine when car is started from cold for about half an hour then volume will go mental with no warning, switch from speaker to speaker and then sit on a certain volume and can't turn it up or down, it also looses all tone, and tone controls don't work.this will also happen after car has been running for the same period and stereo has been off. After car has been left for a number of hours all is fine for half an hour then bleeding ears again, any ideas what component is screwing up

EMV, Radio or tape player. Most often caused by faulty earth wiring or faulty battery and/or terminals.....assuming it is not a simple faulty volume control?

I believe he means that the volume control goes through the tape player, so this is first point to look at since a wiring problem here, perhaps loose wire might be causing it.

Nik/Mark
This is exactly the problem I have, it's intermittent though, I also have the radio conversion. Nik try this next time it happens, go into the tone settings and select a different EQ preset. this stops the volume control lag most times.
Mark, I think I'll book in for the TV conversion so that I can get the ipod connected, I might send the radio back at the same time. How's your workload looking in the second half of November??

Hi Lynton Tone controls don't work at all, can change EQ preset or tone settings but no effect on sound quality and volume control won't turn up or down, but for the first half hour of operation it kicks arse everything works perfectly

Try replacing the tape deck with a known good one.
It is caused by the system not being able to read the modified data stream properly. Any faults in the power supply system will make it worse. This NEVER happens in either of my cars or on the test bench so it is impossible for me to fault find it. I have reproduced the fault once by connecting a known high internal resistance battery to the test bench. If I can ever get one that is permanently faulty i will be able to find out why.
One car with the fault was cured permanently by adjusting the tone controls up by one notch each. Most others have been improved or cured completely by fitting a new battery and terminals and in some cases extra earth wiring (earthing kit).
Incidentally, the normal dimming of the A/C display in time with the indicators in TT's, and non-EMV V8's, is cured completely by fitting an earth kit (e.g. Tim Eacott's TT)

Hi Mark Problem has progressed, it now has no period of good sound, straight to tinnie sound and no volume control. I did a diagnostic and found the error 12 on the TV, now that there is tone control for the TV with the radio conversion would that power supply fault be affecting the rest of the system by cooking other components. As far as swapping known good components it's going to be a bit difficult in Tas as there are only about 10 cars in the state and as far as I can tell mine is the only late model,'95(I understand that there is a difference in the ICE amp setup or somthing from earlier models, no doubt you could clarify)

Hi guys
I am trying to understand what may be causing this erratic volume problem that some of you are talking about. I have personally never experienced it in my car. Something that might trigger the problem would be if the equalizer – bass, mid and treb are all in the middle position. This is a special setting from the radio conversion kit point of view. When this setting is active, the kit thinks the TV is selected and tries to modify the equalizer serial stream. Some people have reported that changing the equalizer settings fixes the problem. So my advice would be if you have the problem, please select equalizer settings different from the default one (all in the middle) and see how it goes.

Hi Vlad I Think I have resolved erattic volume and tone, I was checking connections on tape, CD, Finally got back to the radio unit, wobbled the plugs and hey presto a few crackles and pops and volume and tone are back working perfectly but as soon as I took my hand away and released the pressure it was back to rubbish so i tweeked all the plugs to try and get a better contact and that worked for the volume and tone but now I have no CD, diagnostics says error 24 signal falure CD to radio. So I figure that I will need some new plugs for the radio unit, are they available or will I have to put new little silver thingies in the old plugs.
