You only need an FM expander if your stereo is Japanese banded (ie, goes from 76Khz to 90Khz, where Australian Radio starts at 87Kz roughly, and goes to 107Khz).
The FM expander tricks the radio's reception to being +10/20Khz higher than what the stereo thinks it's getting, therefore when your in Sydney and set your stereo to 76.9Khz, your actually listening to Nova on 96.9 (76.9 + 20Khz = 96.9Khz).
So if you buy an Australian headunit, no problems.
