however the software available for PC systems is not adequate when compared to equivalent head unit setups and the hardware needs careful strategy when installing.

Whilst I agree with the hardware side of things, i think software wise you would just need to broaden your horizons and think outside the square.

Although SatNav is still very limited in Linux, most other things can be done. I'm looking at doing something similar to this setup. Maybe if there isn't anything out there (I stress I haven't looked hard yet) in the way of a customised distro for Car PC's, I may just look into starting a project of developing one. (this will be very dependent on work and how much is involved, still looking into it). Probably mostly pipe dreams at the moment as I still have some other projects to finish, but I am really interested in looking into it.

Yes I'm a Linux zealot, but I have used windows for 10 years and I have found much more freedom to tinker and get under the hood of Linux. Because really how different is that to going and changing your spark plugs, or custom fabricating intake pipes or even a new engine management system. When things are open, the possibilities are endless.

.... Ok I'll get off me soap box now and crawl back into my hole... Don't look at me!!! I'm hideous!!! *hiss*

The biggest problem i have found with the software currently available is that its too hard to navigate quickly, which is what you want in any car environment.

Yeh I'll agree that finding a good "skin" is difficult. I've eventually settled on Xeon for RoadRunner. It's not perfect, but it suits me at the moment.

hey just wondering, the HDD is the main issue when it comes to bumps and stuff, is it possible to get long IDDE and power cables and have the hard drive inside the car while the motherboard and stuff is in the boot.

can you get cables than long?

You could always make one as long as you like.....

Molex plugs are easy to come by.. IDE ribbon shouldnt be that hard to find....

It also depends how well you want it to work.

The recommended maximum is 18" in old money and while it's only a guideline, it's way short of the distance you are probably looking at.

There is some anecdotal evidence that making the cable shorter, eg 6" can improve the speed with fast hard drives.

hmm so the lengh will degrade the speed??

am thinking like 3 - 4 m, from boot to...lets say under seat or something, or glovebox.

hmmmm was just an idea.

In fact, a new skin is on its way. I have a beta version & its fantastic.

BTW, hard drive is not a problem for bumps. Use a 2.5" laptop hard drive thats designed to be bumped around. If you're really paranoid, mount it vertically with rubber washers.

You could boot the pc up on flash memory (not sure how long it would last with windows, it's boot file system changes a lot!) and have the notebook hard drive in a usb caddy, with a long usb cable to the front, worst case, get a powered usb hub up the front to help resolve any power issues. (probably a good idea because it would save running 2 usb leads as notebook drives use and extra one for the power requirement)

Actually not a bad idea to be honest! Saves digging in the boot for the hard drive when you want to update things. Personally I will be using wireless and rsync to do the job :-)

Why not use SATA? It'll run fine over a few meters from what I've read. You are bound to get signal skewing over more than half a meter or so with a regular IDE cable.

Most IDE hard drives are now rated to very high G force standards - often 70+ G's, running or not.

Guys, just shove a laptop hard drive in there & be done with it. Mines been running now for 3mths with no issues & other guys on the mp3car forums have been running theirs for years. It's not like our Soarers don't have any suspension!!

It doesnt matter where you mount the hdd, it matters how you mount it.

I wouldnt even think about putting the hdd more than 30cm in cable away from the mainboard.

Laptop HDD is the way to go. However dont beleive they are invincible. Still worry about how they are mounted! =P

Hey guys I just saw this

HiPE intros voice-operated Drive-N car PCs with Vista MCE}}

Upload

The units, ranging in price from $799 for a barebones Via C7 in an amp-style chassis up to $2199 for a tricked-out double-DIN touchscreen monster, all run Windows Vista MCE with the One Voice command system, and can be outfitted with GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, XM, and even a rearview camera. The machines can also interface with your car's OBD II unit to let you monitor vehicle diagnostics, as well as clear out some of those annoying error messages you usually have to let the dealer handle.
