Hi guys,

I know it's usually better to upgrade the whole system but for me I don't play things too loud anymore. Also, I like the OEM look of the interior, so I was wondering what the best speakers would suit the factory amps? I've got the factory sound system without the 12CD stacker.

Cheers

There is nothing wrong with factory amps.
The best way to explain is to describe my car. I have an aftermarket Sub which is a lot less efficient than the factory one, so needs a bigger amp to drive it.
The new amp needed new power wiring so i ran a huge (0 gauge) power wire from the battery and a capacitor. This power feed is also connected to the factory main amp(s) improving their transient response hugely.
A better option would be to fit a second battery in the boot instead of the capacitor and may actually work out cheaper than the capacitor. Eventually my main battery will move to the boot which is why I ran such a big power cable.
The main factory 4 channel amp can make somewhere around 45 to 50 Watts/chann and with a decent power feed is much better. Power from them WILL depend on battery voltage whereas most aftermarket amps have an internal switched mode power supply making them largely independent of supply voltage, and hungrier for power supply.
I actually run two factory 4 chann amps (use a set of EMV brackets to hold one and the TT brackets to hold the other in the space normally occupied by the Sat/nav....this setup will work in ALL cars with a stacker and looks totally factory). I then have an active crossover driving the two amps and an extra set of speaker wires to the front and rear speakers. Each speaker now has its' own amp with crossovers before the amp.
This means that each individual amp only has to handle part of the total frequency range resulting in much less intermodulation distotion and better speaker damping as well as better transient response and instantaneous power handling...especially with the upgraded power supply. The total power output is still essentially the same but it sounds like more.
The factory speakes are actually better than a lot of aftermarket ones...they just don't look it.
For speakers I use Vifa 4.5" mid/bass drivers which are rated at 8 ohm/150W but are actually 6 ohm and 5" and Vifa tweeters (i'd use the Foster ribbons but I can't get 'em in the standard mounting position). The Vifas will eventually give way to a set of KEF B110's when I get around to it. There are not many GOOD aftermarket 4.5 to 5" car speakers so I tend to use domestic HiFi speakers. The higher impedance means that the amps can't get maximun power but I don't find that a problem; it will be a problem if you can't adjust the input level to the amp as you will end up with slightly lower sound levels from the front speakers (unless you put 'em in the rear too) My electronic crossovers handle all that. Most aftermarket amps can handle 8 ohm speakers and will have the power to drive them as well as input level contols.
The rear speakers in mine are Jaycar 6.5" splits; wasted really as the rears don't do a lot in the factory setup.

My system can handle maximunm volume from the CD input with no sign of overloading or distortion. It may not be as loud as some but it does sound good.
