| As i am constantly on the road almost everyday the thought of GPS and the ability to log onto my network at work via a VPN connection to my mobile has always inspired me. im looking at installing one of these: http://www.polares.com.au/Catalogue/Products.aspx?CatID=27344 im thinking about removing the tape deck player under my EMV and therefore making my EMV useless for using my DVD player and listening to radio.also having an external 8" touch screen mounted somewhere in the car to be used with my mobile for "hands free" mode and navigation with GPS. i understand that an AMP would be required to use the stock speakers with the system. ultimatly i would like my car to look like this:
who ever owns that car- you are a legend! given me inspiration! does that setup sound like it will work? or am i missing something?? |

| Just make sure your power is clean and of the right type and you should be fine mate. Hope it works out! ;) Thats an American model in the pic, however a couple of people here have done up CarPC's before. www.mp3car.com is a great place for info. All the knowledge will pretty much be copy and paste for putting it into a Soarer. |

| I wouldnt necessarily think so... You can build small form PC's pretty cheaply these days. A lot less than $800 thats for sure. |

| yeah that is true, but im looking for something that doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. the single din would fit nicely.even if it does cost a bit. |

| It would definitely be worth a try. I did have plans to install a Mac Mini and a screen in the dash (hiding the Mac in.. places ;) ) however since went in a different direction. If the system has decent warranty and its a 1 dinn or similar and you are happy with the price, give it a go! The great thing with car pc's is that you are really only limited by the software. Unless you are an audiophile in which you may want to look at something with a decent sound card. I know a lot of generic sound cards are pretty assey when it comes to sound. |

| As much as I hate to endorse Telstra, cause they are they do have NextG USB cards that do the same as that 3G card, but to my understanding, a lot faster. I could be wrong about the speed, as I asked Tesltra and they had no idea (Great salespeople!) but I have heard around the grapevine that it is 1.5Mb or will be soon, as they are still ramping NextG up to max speed and the original NextG installation was just to get the service going. Might be worth looking in to, but it seems to be a lot more expensive that Daniels 3G system. I think it was about $59 a month for 300Mb download, $69 a month for about a gig or something along those lines. If you're interested, ask at a Telstra Shop. |

| Hey Ben, I just had one of these installed a couple of weeks ago. I actually got it over Ebay from the US and it only cost me $650 AUD at the time. It's been working great so far, just some minor problems with the power (it randomly reboots itself) but should have it sorted out shortly. I put mine in the glove box and had it connected to my existing EMV, where I had to add an RGB to VGA converter. Also added a digital box for the TV and hooked up the PC's sound output via the box and it's all working great Now I just need to find a small wireless trackball to control the computer... |

| By the way, I blutoothed the PC to my Imate phone running Telstra's NextG and can get fast internet access just about anywhere. |

I had a similar thing with my PDA/SatNav... bluetoothed it to my 3 phone and had internet access wherever I was. Came in handy quite often too! |
