Has anyone here done any custom door enclosures for the front speakers? I've just bought myself a pair of great speakers and I'm going on full ahead to make it the installation special. I got a set of 4.25" splits and done the tweeters already. No problems there. The big job is the woofer. Been thinking of ways to do it because the woofer is going to sit angled to the listener not sitting flush as the original. So I've decided to go with the fibre glass and making the initial mold with wire mesh and thick wire. I've only done the card board cutout to far. This is going to take alott of my time... hmmmm. But worth it for the right sound.

That's a good idea for the tweeters...

A completely new enclosure for the front speakers, now that's a doozy...

Thanks Trev! Yeah I was fussy with them trying to get them to look just right and not dodgy. Sounds great too. I'm having trouble with the woofers now because right now it sticks out too much, so I have to redo them. Farrrrr outt!

Shatt Michael! How did you know? lol

Yeah they are definitely Rainbow. Audiophile sound from a highly regarded company. Their speakers can cost up to $12,000 just for 3 way splits. Unbelievable huh?

I'm going for Rainbow 5x7" for the rears, and possibly an Alpine 10" type x sub with custom enclosure. I really want the type X sub, but I may have to leave that till later. All this is getting way expensive.

I recognised the logo on the dust cap of the driver in the first photo (lower left hand corner). Rainbow make some of the best car audio speakers, certainly in my top handful of manufacturers, that's for sure.

I am about to deck out my car with the new SEAS Lotus Reference comps and subs, cant wait ;)

By the way Ken, your tweeter pods look trumps, props to you mate, cant wait to see the drivers mounted.

Oh wow! Your a home theater designer! I love that stuff. I didn't know Seas made car speakers. My Jamo Concerts 11 have Seas drivers in them and are very sweet. I'm guessing your going to have to import them those Lotus Reference huh? Post some pics up when you have them installed. I'm very interested in how your putting them in.

Thanks for your kind words Michael :-) It will be a while yet until I get the woofer enclosures done though. I will definitely post pictures up once its done.

Yeah designing high end home theatres is one part of my job, we do a lot of distribution of audio gear around Australia and New Zealand also, as well as being involved in a car restoration company which is very sweet.

I had been keen on the Seas Lotus Ref's for a while but could never get onto the distributor in Australia, so I did a little digging and found out they went belly up a while ago so I sent an email to Seas and hey presto I have just been appointed their new distributor for Australia . Cant wait to get my first shipment on the way, I have already completed the Dynamat on my doors, boot and im almost done on the floor so I will be needing the drivers soon. The splits will be running off a DLS A4 and the subs will be run off a DLS A6 (see pics below).

What amps are you running?

First of all to you for becoming the only distributor in Australia! That has got to be exciting news :-)

I've never heard of those amps before. I'm not so much into car audio mainly into high end home audio. But those DLS amps look great and must sound great too I bet. I only know of Sinfoni which makes car amps.

For now I don't have anything exotic running my splits. I use an Alpine mrv-f340 and a Sony (yuck) 222 amp. I want to get another alpine v12 mono block amp with enough power to run a Type X sub in the future. Unfortunately I don't money flowing out of my rear end, else I would go crazy haha

Cheers mate, should be a bit of fun, gives me an excuse to spend more on my car as I can say its for the "business"

DLS are a swedish brand (
www.dls.se), just google them and you will turn up a ton of info on them. I LOVE Sinfoni amps but boy are they pricey, I was considering them for a while, maybe as an upgrade down the track I will look at them but for now the DLS will do the job nicely.

I agree with your comments on the sony amp LOL, never been a fan of Sony car audio, the Alpine will do a much better job for sure.

Good to see an audio buff on the forums, you would have a field day at my work

I'm running a DLS amp in the little Cefiro and quite like it. Not a well known brand, but give it time.

Good luck with the job of distributing them. Am sure they will take off once more people hear about them.

Thanks Tamatha! the Seas name is very well known in the car audio world (as well a home audio) but it has never been supported properly in Oz. I plan to change that

I just had a brilliant idea, which one of my mates suggested actually but was hesitant at the time, which is to go ahead and use the whole door as the cabinet for the woofers. I was initially going to use the original cabinet but that meant I had to extend the hole onto the custom enclosure. I delayed the project because I knew it was going to be hell to make it look right and fit correctly.

"To hell with it and use the whole door as the cabinet" I thought while thinking what I should do with the hideous hole I cut from the passenger door. I'll strengthen the inner interior with fibre glass and put dynamat on the door. Just thinking how I'm going to seal the edges, because obviously I want to be able to open up the door trims whenever I want. I'll come up with something haha Sorry, this post is like an online diary.

Cheers Baggs, your comments are much appreciated.

Ken, I have sealed the big opening in my doors with Dynaplate and completely dynamat'ed the doors (both inner and outer skins). I will be doing a big write up on the process from start to finish soon but here is a picture of my drivers door to give you some ideas. (I put the factory speakers back in until the SEAS splits arrive).

Only a true audio freak would do that! And I'm with ya on that one! hhehe

Thanks for sharing the picture. A lot of dynamat is going to be used for sure. I'm going to a see a friend about dynamat, I think he is going to charge an arm and leg.
