Anyone? I love my factory tweeters and sub. Dont want to lose them. Whats the basic principle of still having them when having a head unit that gives 2 front and 2 back speaker output wires? (link 1 above)

To power the sub you need a dedicated amp... In your case, as you don't have a sub out, you would need an amp with 3 outputs: one for sub and 2 for rear. In that case you would drive the rear speakers output from the headunit to the amp and then the amp will split these into sub and rears...
If you want to keep your factory amp them you need to wire up the new unit to it; it is not impossible but you need certain electronics knowledge and soldering skills. I started doing that, and decided to get a bigger amp in the end with a bigger woofer .
Look for the wiring diagram, it is somewhere around this site, and you can pretty much find the wiring for the amp and speakers. I did and I could identify the colors.
I would not expect much audio performance from those units though; they have under average amps in them. I have installed one ( similar, not exactly the same model, so take this with a grain of salt ) in a VW Golf for a friend with a basic 4 speaker config and did not sound too good... Very distorted .

Marius I have a few speakers / amps ready to be installed, but just need to decide on a head unit. I was considering one of these (or one of the many almost identical 7" no-names on ebay that are in the same price bracket)
You said they suffer for SQ because they have weak amps. Would this be overcome by using decent amps driving my splits/sub? I think the head unit I was looking at was 4x45w.
The rest of the system is 2x500w 12" Alpine Type Rs in a ported box running from a Kicker 800w mono, a pair of Alpine Type X 100w splits running from a Kicker 2x100w, and some decent sounding 6x9s that came with the car, which will run from the head unit.

David,
You need to see how many outputs the head unit has; i.e. does it have sub output or not. To feed the Kicker amp for the subs you need a sub output on the head unit. If you don't have one, you will need to sacrifice the rears on the head unit so it's not too good.
It all depends on the head unit. If you can find one with subwoofer output would be great, as that can be used to power your Kicker amp, and then the remaining 4 channels can be used to feed the other Alpine amp for the rear ( with output converter) and the front to feed straight to the speakers.
I would expect the sound to be better at high volume with this configuration than the head unit alone, as they are known to distort when pumped up on their own (weak amp. components ).
But what you need to keep in mind is that the noise quality will only be as good as the unit can provide... But considering you will be most likely listening mp3's, they should be good enough.
Use good wiring and replace the original wires, don't join the amp power cables with speakers, etc ; so you at least keep the signal as clear as it gets .
