I am not sure if they are "free to air" subs, but they are not like regular subs needing the specific enclosure. Might be worth a trip to your local JB to find out.
Can also supply a 1200W Class D amp to run it - Retail $449, My Price $265. Here is a link. (worth a look, these amps are extremely compact but produce awesome power and drain less power from your battery) http://www.pioneer.com.au/Products/Car%20Entertainment/Amplifiers/GM%20D8400M.aspx

on the band wagon of shallow mount subs, christian has the link to the 10", there is also an 8" sub. i suppose 1 of these on the back parcel shelf in the factory location may sound quite good, and you will probably have to do absolutely no stuffing around. the best thing with the sub is it's only 250w RMS, meaning you can run a small 2 channel amp in bridge mode and it will probably sound awesome

So aftermarket subs won't work with factory setup without an amp? And a little more info on those subs.. http://www.ryda.com.au/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=TSSW1041D&HistoryRemove=0&historysingle=YES Not sure if it REQUIRES an enclosure. maybe someone should get one and let us know how it goes

chris, the only "aftermarket" sub that will work is an OEM style jaycar sub (it is mentioned in an earlier post) that is 2ohm, 35w. my friend has an australian delivered LS400. same style audio system with the shelf mounted 8" sub. he just got the one from jaycar and works a treat.
Karen, the speakers are 4" splits from the factory. there are many different speakers you can put in. me personally i am installing a set of focal 5.25" speakers. there is a tutorial i have saved on my computer, i am fairly sure i got it from here, on making some custom speaker pannels. however if you are just going to be installing 6" speakers, there are some spacers available from ebay USA. i will be making a set for my car, and if i can make a computer designed template, i will go about making some for the forum

yeah they should be fine, all you need to do is pull the face off the speaker box in the door, trace around it and screw it in place of the facia you pulled off. the only thing that may cause them to not fit would be the depth.
