I just finished installing a new head unit
Eonon 838, 7" touchscreen, DVD, etc. (fairly cheapo unit)
in my 1991 non emv, boot 4 channel amp, sub, no stacker soarer
and just thought it would be useful to summarise my findings after ages mucking around with the wiring in the car.
- Its impossible to find adaptors to fit the stock plugs
- no wiring diagram is 100% accurate. FL- FR+ RR+ etc all messed around, a safe level test is a must during the install.
- You CAN use the sub from wiring near the head unit with the stock sub amp. I know its not helpful but I cant recall the wires I connected but I had no problems running my sub from my LR line out by connecting wires at the head unit end.
- No matter what I tried I could NOT use the stock amp without getting interference (buzzing) from the engine and dash dimmer. I tried a supressor and I even tried running the line level outputs and grounding wires outside the car to no avail.
- BUT, it didn't matter. The head unit amp sounded just as good and its easy to connect the speakers. Connect speaker wiring into the GREEN plug that is to the bottom left below where the head unit goes. The socket end leads to the speakers.
- The gap is 2.5 din so a 2din head leaves a gap. I am currently looking for a spare ashtray cover panel to cut a strip out of as a filler. If anyone has one let me know ASAP!
- You have to redrill the headunit cage if you want it to sit against the bottom of the AC.
- I didnt find any better radio reception between the stock and the new headunit. Im using the big plug for fm which seems to work OK in most places but its nowhere near as good as most other cars.
Im sure everyone knew most of these things and I was expecting some of them but I thought it would be useful for others going down the same path as myself.
