I'm in the process of making a new parcel tray out of MDF. I was just wondering how thick the MDF should be? If people have some experiences please share....

12mm will be OK I reckon. The factory one is thin, like 3mm or something, purely there for cosmetic reasons.
Are you supporting much weight?
Note: I have not made one for the Soarer so there may be clearance issues where the glass/trim meets the metal etc. I have used 12mm in other cars with no problems.

Sorry I should have said that first off, only putting two 6x9's in the shelf that's it. I guess if it hits the glass I could always use a router to take that edge off, yeah?

for mine, i used 3ply, was easier to work with, and then i fibreglassed my design, first getting polar fleece and then stapling it on the edges and stretching it over the spacer rings and then painting the fibreglass resin on the fabric until it cannot absorb anymore resin, makes it nice and strong. then let it cure for 2 days in the heat, sand and then carpet with bunnings black boot carpet

all i know Steven, is that it is 3Ply. You get it from bunnings, it is like 8mm, i think. you do not want anything thicker because you need to worry about glass clearance (had to flare the reear edge where it meets the glass) and where the rear window trims sit over behind the seat (needs to sit under that) i just sat my OEM parcel shelf over the 3 ply sheet and traced it out, and worked like a charm. If you go to bunnings and ask for 3 ply, when you look at the raw edges, you will see 3 distinct layers.the rear arm rests are finished, will take a photo today and post it up

that's ok steven, i just remembered that i got the carpet from jaycar. if you are going to be doing a really basic parcel shelf, the bunnings carpet will be ok, however for a more involved parcel shelf, the jaycar carpet is not so thick in the backing and will mould a little better to things easier than the bunnings carpet

That is a rough sketch of what I want to do(don't laugh). I'm going to cut the Lion out and have it over the hole for the standard sub allowing air to come through from the boot. The lion will be done in some type of mesh like the speaker covers than I will do the rest in carpet. Any suggestions?

so exactly what to you want to do with the griffon? do you want to have it "embossed" under the fabric? or do you want it cut out of the MDF? because, if you have a look under the for sale section, i have actually been able to design up the griffon that i have been engraving on scuff plates. i can cut out a decent sized griffon in perspex if you want, i would have to work out how much, but would only be talking like 30 bucks. so if you are interested, let me know. otherwise your design looks good. you will however need to raise the 6x9's as the hole is only 5.5 or so inches in diameter, and a 6x9 won't really fit. i was really lucky as the magnets for my 8" woofer literally just fit with about 5mm to spare so i would say just get some MDF spacers, and if you are going to fibreglass, make a spacer about an inch high and sit it under the back of the speaker spacer ring (closest to the window) to raise it up. will then allow the speaker to fit much better on the parcel shelf

O.k so the plan is to cut the griffon out of the MDF . The idea of a perspex one is great but I did want to allow that air to flow through. Maybe an idea for the boot later on... I will have to do some trial and error with the speakers, I want to find the bare minimum I have to raise them. I think I might take the shelf out tomorrow and have a good look at what I have to do. Will let you know how I go.

Well I'm getting somewhere, I took the parcel shelf out today and traced it out on some MDF. Everything is drawn up how I want it, just have to wait till daylight hours again so I can use the jigsaw to cut the thing out. It is going to be a very fiddley job but I think it will be worth it.

I end up going with 6mm MDF, then if need be I will build it up in places. I picked up the thicker stuff and thought it might be to heavy. So I will just give this a shot and if it doesn't work I'll go and get some thick stuff.

Update, shelf is cut out, it turns out that the cut out at the top is not center.... so because I traced the shelf laid on the sheet backwards I now need to redraw the griffin on the other side of the MDF. Will give more updates as I go.

Rob,I had the whole parcel shelf out for a few days that were rather warm up here in rocky and I didn't actually notice a different smell in the car so I am hoping that's a good sign.
Andrew, haven't made any further progress yet sorry mate, went away for a week and now back at uni so it will be a slow one, however I will keep this up to date as I go, promise

Ok, time for an update. I have the shelf in the car with the speakers mounted. It took a lot of fine tuning with a sander to get the shelf to fit flush against the glass, and the mounting and fitting of the speakers was a rather painful job. However, after lots of cursing and so on it’s in. I have to now work out how and what to cover the shelf in... I will post up pics tomorrow as it was too dark to take photos after I finished.
