I loaded my stacker with cds (genuine copies) and the stereo recognises that there are cds in there, but they won't play...does anyone know why?

like all old pioneer stacker units, the label of the CD needs to face to the tray, so the "read side" is the side you see. the opposite to normal cd players

label side up.
They should play automatically once the c.d button pressed, though if theres a few cd 's in there you have to be patient.
Is it emv equipped? do you get an error code?

Only when I put the cd's in the wrong way up! If i load five cd's it recognises that it has five cds and when I select a cd I can see and hear the stacker loading the disc but I don't get any sound!

Andrew; the next thing i would suggest would be to track someone down who also has a stacker and swap it with yours to see if it is a faulty stacker or headunit. i would also suggest pulling out your headunit just to make sure one of the cables aren't out a little. if you listen to the radio or cassette, do you get sound then?

Yes I get sound with radio and cassette...could it possibly be a dirty or faulty laser?

Yeah it sounds like a laser problem. Should see if you can get another stacker to see if it works then.
