Hi all,
Ok, i have had my car for about 6 months now, and was fairly happy with the system it has.
Now, It was never really loud nor thumping with base, and i was quite disappointed with the sub that is in there. In fact there was hardly any base at all. So i thought that either my sub had blown (previous owner), or it was just a really crappy one.
Well anyway, the other day i was drving and all of a sudden my sub came on full blast!! and was just thumping (not to music or anything) I turned the radio off, and back on, and as soon as i turned the notch a quarter of the way, the sub would kick in at full pelt. What the???
So now i know that my sub works, and can belt out some decent base...But how do i actually get it to work?
Has anyone experienced this? and what could the problem be, together with a good way of fixing it, and getting my sub to work?
Cheers

Sounds truly bizarre Kris , loose conection?...........maybe Mark, when he comes back from his Paddick can provide an answer, or one of the other audiophiles.

Hey Kris i think it is time you updated your system
When i brought my car I already had the stereo to go into it which I had brought, anyways the guy who owned it before me had a sony explode amp running the stock sub with speaker cable BIGGER than the power lead, but there was also the other two wires running to the amp from the head unit. Suprisingly the sub didn't work very well. He was about as sharp as a cue ball.
When I stripped my stereo out of the car there was race tape holding wires together, race tape holding the speakers in the door, you have no idea of how dodgy the install was done previously.

Sorry to be correcting you Don, but mine is a 91 GT...No EMV sadly...
I was contemplating putting a DVD player in etc...but the only one i liked and would put in there was almost $3,000. I just can't justify that kind of cash.
My last exam is on Mon, so next weekend i'll have a thorough look for it, but i just wanted to know what to look for

Hey Kris my dvd player cost me $1400 picture is available in my profile I have the receipt at home as well My dvd player is a pioneer AVH6650 or 6550 i can't remember but it is one of them. Really good deck, only problem i have had is the rca vibrated loose from my subs being to loud lol and it shorted out the RCA fuse. But pioneer warranty claim

I like it...looks good.
The one i am after is a Kenwood, and it is not a motorised screen as such. At first glance the TV looks like the standard EMV (thats why i like it), but it is the entire actual player. The screen then slides down to insert the DVD....it looks really cool.
I dont really want to take apart half of the stereo as i like the original/standard look. I also have the woodgrain kit, so I wanted to keep it all looking fairly stock...Until, the ladies sit in it and go WOOHAA!!! hehehehe

I think i know the one you are talking about. I have a 1 1/2 din pocket on order coming from mazda to fill in the gap. It also covers the faded air-con display hehe. I have the wood grain kit on order as well so I will have wait and see the result.

It's a nice unit, with all the touch screen and the whole lot, but originally they wanted $4,000 for it!!! Then he said he will do me a deal with install for under $3,000....but that is still a lot of money for something that i would not get to use all the time....

The best option so far is the Yank 'Nakamichi' headunit. Bolts in and connectors are all the same. FM radio is perfect (no expanders required) but AM is off-tune a bit.

I managed to pick one up here, never seen another one. There are always some on US EBay, it's just a matter of convincing them to freight to Oz....not always easy or possible. Going price is up to US$200 so it can get out of hand easily. I saw one go for US$120 the other day...

Pretty much the same as the Panasonic factory head unit, the main reson to swap is that they are a direct replacement(no wiring or anything) and have the correct FM band. The main difference with the optional Nakamichi system in the US cars is a bigger/more powerful main 4ch amp and uprated speakers. The premium Nakamichi amp can be distinguished by a very large finned heatsink on top. These are a direct plug-in replacement but probably not worth the effort as they seem to go for around US$220 2nd hand which makes the 4 x100 Jaycar amp a lot cheaper and probably better too.
