Hi, im busting my chops at work, so i cant search through the forum at the moment..
but a quick question..

with the V8 limited, that have the EMV unit.. touch screen etc.

has ANYONE ever managed to engineer an aftermarket double din system dvd/cd.. what ever, into the place where the current EMV is..

BUT, i couldnt figure out a way to do it without removing my VENT buttons etc.. there are buttons on my woodgrain surrounding that control other parts of the interior..

HOW CAN US LIMITED OWNERS PUT IN AFTER MARKET DOUBLE DIN UNITS and keep the buttons too ?

PICS, THREADS..REVEIES.. OPINIONS AND SUGGESTIONS wanted.

thanks

Basically there are three ways to do it.

1. Put aftermarket headunit into dash and wire into TV inputs (good for aftermarket DVD players). Need Vlad mod for radio for decent sound quality though.

2. Rewire all the audio, but leave the EMV in place for controlling aircon. Put the aftermarket unit either where the tape deck is (and move the tape deck else where) or somewhere else. Not very useful for double-din units though.

3. Completely remove the EMV system (display, stacker, aircon panel, radio, gps and tv units).
Replace the climate control with non-EMV version (which requires you to rewire the non-EMV climate control unit to the existing wiring, not for the faint of heart) and then put the double din unit where the EMV used to be.

I have basically done the third option. What I did though unlike everyone else I cheated and for the climate control unit, destroyed my EMV climate control module and stole the plug and used that to build a new loom (no under the dash soldering for me ).

Then I did the following to wire in the new double-din unit to the existing audio (stock amps, speakers and sub):

Remove EMV system (EMV screen, tape player, radio unit and dsp, tv unit, cd stacker), leaving in the speakers, amp, sub and sub amp.

Wire in a TT climate control unit (for air-con).

Wire new head-unit into dash. Run new cables from head-unit to amp and sub-amp in boot:

RCA cables for Front and Rear output (run to amp)
RCA cable for Sub output (run to sub-amp)
Wire from system control line to AMP wire in main and sub amp. (single line, split in boot to run to either amp).
Left mute wire unconnected.

Then cut the input wires on the main amp (FL,FR,RL,RR) and wire them into RCA connectors (connecting all the negative lines of the RCA to signal ground wire).

Cut RU+ and RU- wires on sub amp. Still not sure yet how to wire the sub amp in, am thinking about just running some sort of preamp first, still reading up about see (see this for more:
http://soarercentral.com/sc-forum/messages/13208/113656.html ).

Run the cables under the carpet (either down the middle or down the sides) and then mount the unit where the EMV used to be. Used existing EMV wires for ACC, Battery, Illumination (its the green wire on the TV plug) and Ground wire to run the headunit.

All works for me at the moment, but still have yet to wire in the sub amp.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH i seee i see so can i use a TT climate control top pannel like you have in my Limited soarer in the place were the factory EMV is.. and then just engineer my new double din DVD screen into the bottom half of the 'area' where the tape deck used to be..

will my current climate control cables etc in the back of the EMV plug into the TT version of climate control
is it all plug and play or do i haveto cut up cables

i NEVER thought of this tim, your an absolute LEGEND mate

im going to put my own sub and amp and new set opf speakers ALL round anyway so the cabling for all that is not important, and neither is locating the factory amp and getting that to work etc..

i planned out al my audio gear but the ONLY thing i neeed help with was HOWW i can get a doubble din DVD screen into my dash and remove the old touchscreen and tape deck

THANKS for your help tim i will read your thread and all links in this reply tonite after work

apreciate it 110% mate

thanks again !!! mint idea!

I can't really take much credit, its already been done first a few times before by a number of people (Luke Gomer in UK, Brett here in Australia, Fred in NZ as well I believe), along with a number of other people who have also done the conversion.

I suspect though that I'm probably one of the few (if any) that actually built a proper loom by reusing the female connectors from the EMV climate control unit under the dash (and thusly destroying the EMV unit in the process, oh well). So I didn't have to solder connections under the dash, did it all on my desk.

Its also not plug and play, even if you get all the TT loom it actually all plugs together nicely, but doesn't actually work either (Toyota reused some plugs for different purposes).

This thread is a basic outline of what has to be done, although its not the best tutorial.

http://soarercentral.com/sc-forum/messages/31680/246760.html

I was planning on writing up what I did, but don't really have the time at the moment, but I'll post up later tonight some photos from mine along with a detailed matching for all the connections.

If your not big on soldering, cutting wires or getting up under the dash, then this can be a bit scary looking. Also, I highly recommended getting the wiring diagrams from Jeff Harper before attempting this sort of conversion.

Or you can just remove the cassette unit and bin it.

Place a single din multimedia unit (DVD/MP4 etc) in its place wired directly to the speakers, and wire the multimedia video directly to the EMV screen.

Ahh, in that case, just get a copy of the wiring diagrams from Jeff Harper and you'll be set, its all in there, just matching the two wiring looms together. My two biggest suggestions, rip the plug out of the EMV climate control unit (under the dash) and pull the drivers seat out before doing anything under the dash :p

Also a good idea, although I heard its tricky to get a single din unit in under the EMV. I guess you don't need the tape unit for controlling air-con either do you?

ok ive purchased my CC unit from James off this forum

with the loom..

im tossing up between a 9887 hardcore SQL deck with a PXA and INSANE speaker setup, or just PIMP it out with a double din DVD screen..and put some half decent speakers and go for more of a Theater surround sound setup

if i go with an SQL setup, i will only chuck some VERY expensive splits or 3-ways up front

but if i go surround sound ill go splits up front, splits in the rear, dual sub..amps.. caps the works!

Most of the Toyota clips have a small 'button' like piece in the centre of the plugs that can be pushed in with screwdriver or the like whilst pulling the plug away from the connector at the same time.

It is just a matter of seeing which side of the plug this is on.

Hi guys, ok i finally finished my EMV / CC conversion TONIGHT, purposely took my time, but its ALL DONE, i used the orange Saddle from the EMV-CC-ECU under the dash, and on the back of the saddle i just extended the replacement CC loom to it using the coded walk-through above..

EVERYTHING WORKS PERFECTLY FINE im VERY happy with it..
some colours did not match up but theres no biggy i just made sure EACH Clip and Wire was connected to the right one REGARDLESS of colour of the cable..
so ye, i had to relocate some of the wires and stuff around a few of the clips but first go, WORKS PERFECT..now i can feel my heater and aircon on my face rather than my feet because i couldnt press the left side of the EMV screen where the "face" direction option for aircon was.. lol

so ye
im HAPPY

BIGG BIGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG THANKS TO TIM PIKE AND RICHARD FERRERA..

IF IT WASNT FOR THOSE TWO, TIM SUGGESTING RICHARDS ARTICLE, AND RICHARD WRITING IT UP, I WOULDNT HAVE DONE IT

THANKS AGAIN

to be honest no, no pics at all but theres a GAPING hole in my dash due to no EMV
when i get back from QLD on the weekend i will purchase a new DVD screen etc for my car in the coming weeks

and get some pics up of HOW i done the loom and etc

i basically unsoldered the orange saddle from the ECU under the dash.. and used the back end of the saddle to extend the wires to the Cliamte Control..

the longest and HARDEST part was getting that saddle off without destroying the circuit board ahaha

i just kept having to solder the back of the board and keep it hot.. took SOO LONG man.

anyway
jobs done but SINCE the conversion ive had issues with the engine..revs bounce up and down when im stationary at lights.

Jengiz, capital letters should be used to start sentences and at other appropriate places. Using capitals the way you do, looks like your fingers have Tourette Syndrome.

remove the air con controls from the emv when u take it out, and attatch the unit to the roof of the glove box, (the lead should reach easily) only thing u cant contol fan speed, but put it on med before u remove and not a big prob.
