Hey guys,

So I have metallic tint on my windows, and my radio reception sounds like crap 80% and the other 20% its just white noise. (It sounds nothing like The Living End either)
I understand that because the standard antenna is in the rear window, and with the metallic tint it blocks the signal quite a bit.

So, without getting the tint ripped off and a non metallic tint put on, what else is there that will guarantee me perfect reception??

I was thinking about one of those fin antennas like on the BMW's but cant find any to purchase, and I'm not keen in drilling a hole through the roof to fit it either to run the wires.

I read somewhere on the supra forums that it's possible to rewire the antenna and use the roof of the car / chassis as a big antenna but cant find anything on it anymore. Has anyone ever heard of this before??

Anyone have any ideas?? I'm wanting something that cannot be seen, so don't really want wires running along window edges or anything. No drilling either!

Let me know what you know of!!

Thanks

I read about an installer that used a fine sharp knife to cut a line in the tint to separate the aerial from the heater lines. Apparently it worked a treat.

I have been disgusted with the reception on FM radio for years here on the Gold Coast so I bit the bullet and purchased a shark attack 2 amplified antenna from the US and now reception is absolutely fantastic.
This will not be to everyone's liking and I am NOT asking for opinions. It is my choice and the results are everything I was after and then some!

Measure twice and cut once!
19mm Hole in the correct place.
Pulled down roof lining and then used coke can to hold lining away from roof.
Drill hole.
Install antenna with a little silastic to help with seal.
Run 12v from aftermarket ICE unit (provided from ICE unit to run to amplified antenna - so 12v is only there when radio is selected) and connect antenna lead.
All up about 1 hours work.

Tint is on the inside of windows. I have 5% of metallic tint and obviously don't have an issue because the signal is not interfierd because signal comes from the outside of the car not the inside...

Metallic tint can alter the antenna characteristic due to its closeness to the antenna elements regardless of the side of the film to signal.

I actually got good reception with the soarer antenna around Brisbane but here on the Gold Coast it was useless.

Also, I'm not sure if the antenna is correct for the radio signal polarisation here in Australia. FM stations here mostly transmit with vertical polarisation (although some do transmit both vertical and horizontal), whereas I think the japanese antenna is designed for their horizontal polarisation. This means the standard antenna won't get good reception if the station only transmits a vertically polarised signal.

If your running an aftermarket head unit then there is a chance that they did not wire in the factory antenna booster (power antenna wire), I had the same problem with my car reception got a whole lot better as soon as it was wired up to power.

This is a wiring output from another thread. You can connect it to the power antenna output on the head unit or just to a accessories wire it is the Black/Red wire.

Thanks for that Rob, but it didnt work :-(

My plug didnt even have a black and red wire on it, just a red one. So I tried that and nothing. Looked at the other plugs and there was only one other red/black plug so I tried that haha and it still didnt work.

Something I've realised though... I dont think my rear window demister is plugged in. If its not, could that play a part of poor reception?? Is the antenna wire on the same wire/loom as the rear window demister??

I am pretty sure there are two connectors that go connect to the rear window on the drivers side. One is the antenna and the other is the demister. If connecting the red/black to the power supply did nothing then there must be a problem somewhere maybe the signal amp is faulty or the antenna is not connected. The signal amp must be plugged in to get decent reception.

Radio amplifier is in the roof lining.

That yellow box with antenna connector is only the oem remote door lock ecu.

Not sure if this helps, but might be of interest to those wanting a better aerial without having to cut a hole in the roof. Blaupunkt make an aerial which mounts on the back window- shark type with a small extra aerial (helps with mobile phone reception, too). I don't think they're available in Au, and priced at 130 pounds in UK, so damn expensive.

According to the Toyota Parts catalogue the part highlighted is the antenna amplifier and the one in the roof is a noise filter. I know there is also a keyless entry receiver in some as well.

No its not, the yellow part IS the keyless entry receiver. The amplifier IS in the roof lining.
The noise filter sits close to the keyless entry receiver as shown below

You can get internal powered antennas. They mainly use them for shaved motorbikes\hot rods. About $300 or so for a name brand one that works.

I dont even have an aerial and I can pick up stations! Very weird, have trouble once I leave town areas but 95% of the time it's fine with alittle crackle...who needs the radio when you've got a great cd player.

Oh yea nice Soarer matey, had you thought about the sharks fin antenna or didn't want to have it look like a BMW?

That's because your aerials are in your window glass- two of them, which is why there are two aerial leads from stock head unit.

hmm could that be why I'm getting poor reception? I can see the 2 antenna plugs, but on my aftermarket headunit there is only one hole for the bigger one. Come to think of it, when I had all the wires out the other day, when I touched the antenna plug that wasnt plugged in, the reception got better...

Brett, or anyone else that knows - do you get good AM reception with those shark attack/shark fin type of antennas? I get zero AM with my aftermarket headunit despite powering the antenna amplifier and having no tint etc. FM is great though.
