Hey all.

Having a few issues with my DVD player.

I have connected the parkbrake wire to the earth wire to allow constant operation.

It works, you turn the car off, then back on again and it doesn't. The earth from the wire in the dash has been tested and is fine.

Totally baffled by it, any ideas?

And please no do-gooder comments about the legalities of it. That's my concern, I'm aware of it, and I do not need or want your input on it.

Just need info or help on the question raised. Thanks :-)

Hey Tim,
Very strange fault you've got there, has it done that from the time you grounded the handbrake wire, or has it come up recently? (did it work fine for a while and then start faulting?)
Is it possible that it is a safety feature of the particular unit that you are using preventing users from bypassing it?

I had a strange fault develope with my DVD unit in that it would not turn off completely. The unit would switch off, but the back lights and thermo fan would keep running. Disconnecting the constant power and reconnecting it fixed the problem. Basically resetting the internal CPU.

If this fault of yours has only just showed itself, maybe try resetting the unit.

The unit is brand new. I wired it up, tested it. All worked fine

put everything back in place. Then the next time in the car, I get the message on screen about it only playing audio,

pull it all out, checked connections to earth. All seemed fine. Checked the earth from the wire, all fine. Reconnect it all, test DVD in it and it worked.

Put it back in the dash again, and same audio only message on screen. Total

Only thing I can think of is running the parkbrake wire to a seperate earth instead of connecting it to the same one the unit is using

you wouldn't think that would make a difference. An earth is an earth, they should all be common. Give it a try though, otherwise I would be contacting the supplier to see what they have to say about it.
Otherwise you maybe able to trick the unit into thinking it is connected to the handbrake by putting a toggle switch in line with the handbrake wire to ground so that you are able to toggle the switch on and off simulating putting the handbrake on and off.

Figured I would post up the solution sice I have just found it and fixed it in case anyone else has the issue.

The DVD unit was smart enough to tell when there was a constant earth, and wouldnt allow the dvd to operate as a result.

What I have instead done is inserted a switch, one side of it running to the earth, the other side to the parkbrake wire.

Now, whenever switch is on. dvd is on
switch is off... dvd is off.

Easy fixed in the end :-)

the new systems, u have to operate your handbrake twice before it will allow the unit to operate mate. Had this problem with my mates 7 inch clarion unit.

Connected it to handbrake and can get it to operate on 1 click haha so works for us.

Otherwise like u did, connect it to a switch to switch on off on, then works fantastic :-)
