A few kilos won't really affect the performance. After all do you drive with the fuel tank on less than 1/2 all the time? 78 Litres of fuel weighs around 78 Kgs. So do you notice if the car is faster when you have a 1/4 tank?

Depends on how much you want to spend I guess. What music do you listen to? Most decent quality subs will sound pretty good for doof doof hey. It took me ages to find the right sub because I listen to mostly metal, rock, blues, stoner guitar stuff.. most subs tend to be very overpowering and have resonant peaks at lower frequencies - mixing the soud of bass guitar and drums together making it sound muddy and plain bad. After trying some very good subs such as Alpine type-x, Kicker solo baric, Soundstream of some description and some champion series Pioneer ones, they all exhibited this low end resonant spike which overpowered the music no matter how much I tried to EQ or LPF it out. I settled on a set of cheaper Pioneer TS-W12PRS subs. They aren't built to handle a million watts or pump crazy loud, rather built to reproduce sound naturally and fill the music rather than over power it All comes down to what you listen to!

That won't fit Ali, you'll have to remove some metal from the shelf if you're dead set on it.

Yeah illegal too but I mentioned it mainly because it's a pain in the arse Ty, what amp are you going to run the sub with? What's Hertz gear like? I know bugger all about car stereo brands haha

hertz is expensive but good. you should hear my mates 20k stereo in his accord euro.. its insane!! as for the amp im not really sure, i picked up a crappy for like 100 bucks but has nowhere near the power to keep up with the sub... ali.. if you get yellow stickered and they check when you go over the pits your screwed?.. but as if they will check.. i think if you take the risk, i think its gonna be one of those things that you may not be able to fix if you have to

20k stereo? that would want to sound good! i guess hertz is an expensive brand then? oh dude, underpowered amps kills speakers pretty damn quickly. usually a lot quicker than over-powering the subs.

I listen to a bit of trance, house, and 70's to current rock. I went for a smaller sub (8") with dual voice coil... very punchy and not overpowering at all. and it fit into the parcel shelf perfectly... so win/win for me

I guess I should quickly elaborate.. when an amp gets driven near it's limit the output waveform from the amp starts to clip and instead of having smooth peaks it flattens out, which holds a constant voltage for the period of time the peak is flattened - Distortion. This constant voltage heats the voice coil up in the speaker and because the cone isn't moving, it heats up exponentially and shortly burns out. I've done it heaps of times (not on car stereo) and seen it happen often. A lot of the times it's from the gain settings on the amp being incorrectly set too.

Another problem, from my own experience. If you wire the speakers out of phase, the bass will be very flat and quiet. I increased the gain so much that I damaged the voice coil. So, Make sure that your speakers are wired in phase.

Yep because the frequencies cancel eachother out. This is how you "break-in" subs without needing to deafen yourself and look like an idiot in traffic; connect each sub to a 12volt ac stepdown transformer and face them towards eachother. After a bit of twiddling with the positioning you can get it so it is barely audible!

No no, I used to word speaker to refer to speakers or subwoofers. It's always a good idea to have one amp running your speakers and a seperate mono amp (monoblock) to run your subs. |

I have a 10" 400W pioneer sub in the parcel tray with an alpine mono 500w amp running it and it provides plenty of bass and the bonus is I still have an empty boot.
