Hi All, searching has come up a blank. I have a 91 V8 with an EMV system and the CD works with very little sound on maximum volume for about 30 secs then "popping" and turns off. Tape nothing and radio nothing except whine with engine revs. EMV seems to work OK. What do I do first? Thanks

Find another radio and DSP unit to swap in for a test. I am thinking it is most likely the radio, but since they come out together, might as well try both.
Pity your not in Vic. I have one here you could use.

I have a 91 v8 too, and had exactly the same problem, gave up on it, put my fist thru the emv screen, ripped out the tape deck and put a pioneer head unit in and re ran all the wires, problem solved.

Thanks for info. Here is the latest: To check for loose connections-I have now fiddled with the wires on both the CD Changer and the black box beneath it in the boot and now nothing happens at all? The CD and tape are now not working or even "popping" through the speakers. There is definitely a live running to each component as verified with my voltage checker. I removed the lid from the black box and rejiggled the wires- the internal toyota cd doesnt spin and nothing is working again. Checked the fuse in the kick panel and ok. Any ideas anybody! PLEASE??!!

Have you checked the control modules below the front of the rear seat squab (hidden by the floor carpet). Maybe one of them is dead? My EMV is doing the wavey screen and only the RHS speakers output sound...I have checked the speakers and swapped in different amps and that's not the problem. Have swapped in another EMV which is still having problems. I don't know what I'm doing re: capacitors / resistors and stuff, so not going to risk wrecking a circuit board.

I checked the little plastic cut off switch on top of the sliding cover of the CD changer- it was broken and I replaced with a screw and now it works as before! Very low sound, "popping" and goes off. At least it works for a few seconds!! Seems as if the CD changer is making searching noises after it has immediately gone off. Not checked the under rear seat area and will do so tomorrow but it does seem a little strange.

James, your audio problem will most likely be due to the radio unit/dsp unit located under the rear seat ( passenger side ) as stated earlier by others. Swap the unit out with a known good unit . CD players are often faulty - don't get too hung up about trying to fix it .

Thanks Luke I will have a look asap. Will I be able to run a resistance check across it to check if it is working anybody? Or does anybody in the Perth area know of a good electronics diagnostics place? I had an ECU from a TR Magna repaired somewhere in Os. Park but cannot for the life of me remember where.Something like Precision Electronics but I cannot find them anywhere.

James, as Luke has said, swap out the DSP unit, you will also have to swap out the tuner as well, (the dsp plugs into the tuner). I had very similar problems, ie popping, quiet volume and the whine with engine revs. I ended up swapping out the DSP which solved the one of the problems, (can't remember) and changing a few/one of the boards in the tuner to solve the other two problems.

Had both units out yesterday and apart from a little rust around the bottom edge of the case there seems to be no other damage (blown capacitors etc) I say this with an electrical engineer pal of mine looking over the units too!! Anybody in WA willing to possibly let me swap the units over for a few minutes to do a definitive check??. Thanks.
