Hi guys
Looking at getting my 94 sc300 soarer within the next couple of weeks but I want to know what I will be able to put into it speaker wise.
Are the stock speakers at the back on the back quarter panels? or are they up top behind the rear seats near the rear window?
I was looking at putting 6" splits in the front, 6" coaxial's in the back (depending on where back speakers are located) and 2x 12" subs in the trunk.
Do soarer's have stock tweeters? What size are the stock speakers? How good are the stock speakers? Would I need to do any modifying to the interior of the car to be able to fit 6" speakers?

Q: Are the stock speakers at the back on the back quarter panels? or are they up top behind the rear seats near the rear window?
A: Stock speakers are under the parcel shelf, to remove parcel shelf safely (without risking breaking it) you will need to remove rear seats and side cabin linings and window surrounds.
Q: I was looking at putting 6" splits in the front, 6" coaxial's in the back (depending on where back speakers are located) and 2x 12" subs in the trunk.
A: I'm running a similar setup (minus big subs). You will need to make up some MDF peices to act as adaptors to take your speakers.
Q: Do soarer's have stock tweeters? What size are the stock speakers? How good are the stock speakers? Would I need to do any modifying to the interior of the car to be able to fit 6" speakers?
A: yes, stock tweeters are behind the mesh at the corners of the window surrounds, the cover is easy to pop off... have a look. Standard front speakers are 4" for memory, rears are about the same... maybe 4.5". Quality on them isnt too bad. Modifying, as mentioned above... search and you shall find

thanks Tim, that was very helpful.
I'm not too good with installing speakers and such, i have never done it before.
i would most likely get JB to install all the speakers for me. do you think they would do the modifying required to get the 6" setup into the car? or don't JB do that?

i have really good speakers in the front, but apparantly the stock front boxes for the 4in fronts are perfect to fit other 4inch in there, since you will have subs you dont need bass out of the front speakers or back, so the custom stock box for the front speakers, you will get better sound from good 4inch than you would any 6.5s

Thanks for that Ty. I just did some research and came across this. "The std front speakers are 4.25", some 4" speakers do not seal in the speaker housing unless they have a wide mounting flange, I had to make little mounting plates for the JBL GT 4" splits to get them to seal proper otherwise you get an air leak between the front/rear face of the speaker cone and loose efficiency while inducing more distortion because of the loss of air suspension damping (like dangling a speaker on piece of string in mid-air)."

I just got back from looking at the soarer I want to get. On the rear shelf it looked like it had either a 5 1/2 or 6" speaker on the right and left, and in the middle it had a 8 or 10" sub. It had a greenish mesh covering these speakers. The salesmen said they were stock speakers.. They didn't look stock to me..

Stock Soarer speakers consist of:
2 x 4" speakers in the doors 2 x tweeters in corner of window surround 2 x 6" speakers on parcel shelf 1 x 10" sub in parcel shelf
Salesman was right they are stock speakers covered by the mesh. Very high quality speakers for standard. You would have to be spending big dollars to get decent aftermarket replacements.

Thanks for that Karl.
Would putting aftermarket 4" splits in the front and 6"s in the back make audio uneven due to different speaker sizing? I was also wanting to put 2x12" subs in the trunk so the stock 10" sub and housing would be useless to me. Does anyone have any pictures of a modded parcel shelf as where the 10" sub housing is removed from the shelf? This is what I would most likely do. I don't want an empty 10" whole sitting on the parcel shelf..

To avoid the sound being uneven, you are able to tune it out with the gain on the amp. Who ever you get to install it (so long as they have half an idea) will do this for you anyway.
Most people want a good strong sounding front stage, the rears add some fill and the subs fill the base. If tuned right (this next part is just what I think) it should sound like almost all the music is coming from the front speaker, bass included.

I have came across some reasonable priced 2nd hand Focal 165V1 6.5" Splits. Would it be worth building an adapter plate and using these speakers for the front? They are very good speakers but I have told you loose audio quality if you make your own adapter compared to having the exact size mounting already in your door.

its not that hard to be honest?.. i did my own, i hope i dont loose quality... but apparantly there is alot of modification to the one you buy that are supposed to fit...
i bought mdf, traced the original box on the speakers (just for a rough diagram) cut it out, and lined it up. and cut what i needed to where i needed to, it can be time confusing but 4 bucks for a peice of mdf or 25 bucks and 20 postage for ones that still need modding?

Well I have just bought the 6.5" focal splits for the front, just about to head out and get some mdf. would the grill that's on the the door at the moment covering the speakers be ok? like because the grill is small, wouldn't the audio quality be reduced as not all the audio would get through the grill properly?

ok so i have removed the trim but im not sure what to trace? can someone post a picture of what their door trim looks like after making a faceplate? or can someone explain to me what to remove and what to trace because i'm not sure what to replace.

oh well i didnt really do an expert job i just did what first came to mind, i took the speaker mount out.. look for the screw, that screw into the door theres probably about 4?
then sit the speaker pod(whole black thing) ontop of mdf and i did a rough trace around it haha! not much a pro job, more like an inexperienced job haha!
basically from tracing the pod onto the mdf, and then cutting out the mdf mine looked like this
of course thats the pro job, but so much cheaper for DIY... as the ones you can buy (linked below) people have said require so much modding its cheaper and easier to DIY.
then once you bore out the hole in the middle. i think mine was just a bit over 5inch, then i bought brackets from repco for like 6 bucks i bought 6 1/2 spacers. just so i didnt go to the effort of drilling out the brackets...
hope that makes sense mate.
but here if your curious.. mine kinda looked like this afterward..

If the speakers cant fit in the factory pod and if there is a hole behind the factory mount, they Mount the speaker on a Piece of MDF wood then mount the MDF wood to the door with screws. Otherwise they would have to make some sort of pod that can mount a larger speaker onto the door.
