hi guys

so i already have a focal solid 4 amp (4x100w 2ohm, 4x75w 4ohm). im wanting to get some k2p speakers to go with.

i was thinking 6.5" coaxials (80w 4ohm) for the rear, but im undecided about the fronts. i could get 4" splits (60w 4ohm) but im thinking the rear speakers @ 20rms more would overpower the fronts? would this be the case? or i could get 6.5" splits (80w 4ohm) for the front which would match the rears but some cut outs would need to be made to accompany the larger speakers.

anyway my questions are, which speakers do people normally tend to have the higher power? fronts or rears? or the same? and would 4" splits for the front be enough? how much noticeably better would 6.5" splits with cutouts be at the front than 4"?

for the rears, the speakers are rated at 80wrms @ 4ohm but my amp is only 4x75w @ 4ohm, would this still work fine if 4 speakers were rated 5w greater each than the amp?

I should also add that I will have 2x12" kicker L7 subs (1500rms) in the boot.

Here is my 2c..

Go with 6.5" splits upfront, a very noticeable difference versus a 4" set.
You will need to get a mdf spacer made up to install them. Not hard.

If a speaker is rated at a greater power it doesn't mean it will be playing louder. The speaker specs are provided as a guideline. Tuning the system i.e. setting gains and crossovers in line with the speakers capabilities is whats required.

Generally speaking a well set up front end and a quality sub, will mean no need for rear speakers. Rear speakers tend to draw the sound stage backwards, and you will find that most will generally fade out their rears all together (I know I have). Again this comes down to personal preference. But if you were to get some rear fill, I would suggest the basic set of coaxial's in the same range as the front end.

Second, the install plays a great part in the quality of sound you will achieve. Sound deadening the doors, I consider a must. Also consider running new speaker wiring for your components.

Subs in the boot of a soarer tend to lack a kick as compared to other cars, due to the fuel tank, and metal separating it from the cabin. If you are getting a custom enclosure having it port into the cabin through the stock rear shelf speaker location is a good idea. Otherwise remove the metal speaker covers to help allow the sub to enter the cabin more easily.

Personally I would get some Focal K2P and run them up front. Bridge your solid 4 amp and run them 200wrms per side (no this isn't going to blow your speakers) just make sure it is installed by a professional or someone who knows what they are doing and they set up the amp correctly and you wont have any problems.

If you are set on having rear fill get some Focal 165CA1.
If you haven't already got a sub. Why not a Focal 33KX, or if you have more money to burn a 33WX2. Otherwise a boston G5 or SPG555, would be my choice.

Btw i have a set of Focal K2P which might be up for sale, as currently, I think I prefer my boston Z6 splits.

hey sami

i will get the 6.5" splits but i want quality at the rear too. are you saying that i would not notice any sound quality difference if i had access 6.5's in the rear as apposed to k2p's?

and yes, i already have these subs:

As the driver of the car, you won't notice the rear speakers that much with decent set of 6.5inch speakers up front.

Just get a basic set of 6" speakers for the rear.

I think it will be a waste... With those subs you probably wont even hear them.

Sub frequencies are generally not directional i.e. you can't hear where they are coming from. Thats why placing them in the boot doesn't really effect a sound stage.

Front speakers alongside tweeter placement play the biggest role in how you perceive the music you play. If you were at a concert the sound comes from infront of you? So when you set up your system you would want something similar. To feel as if all the sound is coming from infront of you and that you are sitting on top of the sub. This can be done with some tuning of the sound settings and time alignment etc.

Rear speakers just repeat the frequencies produced by the front speakers (overlap). As a result can draw the sound stage backwards. Generally the rear are used as 'fill' or completely faded out in SQ setups. Hence why I suggest 165CA1, if you feel that you must run something.

You can come hear the K2P in my car if you want. But I am yet to get them set up exactly how I want. But you will get an idea on how they sound, and what happens when I run my rear fill at the same time (currently unplugged), as well as the effects of the sub etc.

The problem is, the car is the worst environment for placing speakers. If your going to put high end stuff in like Focal K2P, your going to need to have custom door trims made up to let the speakers face you, otherwise having them firing into the floor, you will not have any good sound stage. While I didn't get custom door pods, I did make offset MDF Boards to try aim the speaker higher toward the listener.

Fronts will not overpower the rears, you can set gain with the amp. RMS Ratings too for power handling should be taken with a grain of salt.

Personally I'm not a fan of Subwoofers in the boot, I'd prefer to have one in the parcel shelf or a pair of 6 x 9's that are designed for bass, such as the CDT CL69-SUB, these are just a woofer cone. You can try both. If you want a sub, it's hard to find something that actually sounds good, 98% of ones I've heard, even the "High End" Stuff is rubbish you have to shop around.

If you get something like a good set of CDT's just for Bass rear fill, play around with the crossovers on the front and rear speakers until you get a nice sound.

And definitely sound deaden the doors and rear shelf, this is a must.

yeah well im not really after a punchy bass, 98% of the time my sub is on lowest volume. i like loud bass though, so every now and then i crank em up for and giggles.
