Well, I've finally bitten the bullet, and purchased a new stereo for the Soarer. Got sick of crappy radio reception and changing single CDs. The new unit is a SONY CDX-GT700UI, the main point for me is front USB. My question is, what connectors do I need? I know Aeropro have one for Sony, but does anyone know the part number for the adapter to '97 Soarer wiring loom? Aeropro list a couple for Toyota, are these suitable? Aeropro also list an aerial adaptor for diversity aerials, for Nissan but looks similar to Toyota setup (I believe Nissan Patrol 2-DIN stereos have twin/diversity aerials).

As part of the conversion I'll fit a Mazda 1.5 DIN pocket, later I'll probably fit a gauge or two in the pocket and maybe a power socket or two (One just isn't enough!:-)), depending on how it all goes. My main issue is to get the stereo in and working with minimum of fuss, though.

Thanks, Orton, I have two harnesses arriving today will see how it goes. I haven't chased a 1.5 DIN pocket as yet will see what it looks like after the stereo goes in. Having a hole in the dash is a small price to pay for new sound, and I may have to delve around inside there a bit as there's a whistle from the centre vents- a leaf stuck or the black air trunk sealer (which is falling off/ageing/falling to bits.)

Thanks Matthew, a great article.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the "radio signal amp"? Is that the copper coil thingy behind the wall panel in the back, driver's side? I don't have the premium stereo so no woofer, either.

Thanks, Orton. I'm in western NSW, not western Sydney, 700km west. I do have family in Blacktown, I'll give you a wave if I see you (but then, I might be in my other car and you'd think me a nutter:-).

The article Matt posted is from the Us, I'd say, the Lexus SCs have a "normal" aerial.

as your antenna for your radio in incorperated into your back windows the reception is not the best. There is a wire in the loom to the original head unit that powers and antenna amplifier already built into your car. I found when i originally installed mine i didnt know about it, and had almost none if any radio reception and it drove me insane untill i found this write up. From memory i think it was the a8 wire shown in the pic but mine was black (i think) but it makes a clear difference if you have the radio on whilst it is all pulled out and connect a8 or a1 to the power antenna wire from your headunit you will notice a large difference.

See how you go as this is what worked for mine

i ended up installing a clarion vx400a doubledin headunit in mine with 4inch clarion fronts and 6inch clarion rears and the sound is amazing. I did install a pioneer 10 inch sub in the original sub mounting tray but have installed and amp to run it yet but the sound i am getting out of it now will tie me over quite fine for a while

I have the old stereo out, I'm a bit mystified by having three plugs, two white ones which connect nicely to the adaptor harnesses I got (Aeropro-type) one has 4 pins, assume for speakers, but there's an extra blue one with 6 pins, have no idea what it does- unless it's for a sub which I don't have. I thought cars with standard subs had a different stereo? (And why connect it to stereo anyway, there's no amp in the boot and of course no sub and no wiring up the back).

The stereo looks exactly the same for sub/no sub cars. From memory the only difference is that plug. I had a non sub amp in the car when it was imported (leading me to believe there was an aftermarket head unit in there at some stage) and the fact my subwoofer did not work puzzled me for ages.

I bought someone elses complete factory stereo install for a couple of bucks and decided to try the second stereo with additional plug and voila! The sub worked.

I am icing a bung knee at the moment, so I'll look up my schematics and confirm all that.

I am only partially correct. Doesn't appear to be for the sub. There is a fourth plug for the amp/sub in the schematic.

Looking at the schematics, you have the "Audio with inbuilt amp" and no CD changer setup, or "Audio(no multivision, with amp option)". There is a blue six pin plug with five wires (in this schematic) and they go to the A/C temp control and volume switch. I assume that you can leave this unplugged with your new stereo unless you plan some electronic trickery to use the factory volume knob with the new stereo.

Thanks, Ben. Hope your knee comes good, a dickey knee makes it hard to get in and out of a Soarer!

Th blue plug running the car's volume knob makes perfect sense, and it's not now needed, of course.

I have a bigger problem now. With the console surround off, I got the stereo working fine, no issue, all speakers up and good sound. However, when I tried to refit the surround, it wouldn't go over the stereo. The "mounting box" is in the way, and so is the fascia plate. I've now left it until tomorrow. I had a deal of trouble even mounting the stereo, as the box has tabs, none of which had anything to engage in, so I used two screws into the sole available holes on the new headunit. At the moment I have the headunit directly under the HVAC control box, I might have to move it downwards, as I can see no way I can get the surround over the stereo fascia, unless I poke it out another 10mm or so which would look stupid, and probably not line up the screw holes.

Try a soarer with a roll cage...

When I used to do stereos for mates we used to use some lightweight metal strap that was predrilled and create our own mounts from something solid above and below the stereo. In a couple of cases I just ditched the metal mounting case and mounted the unit in my own fabricated mounting.

This metal strap- I have no idea what it is called- is dead easy to work with. It bends really easy, is easily cut with side cutters or tin snips and has a bunch of holes and slots in it already.

Yeah, I've seen that stuff even had some somewhere but haven't a clue where after 1/2 a dozen moves. Looks like galvanised Meccano strap only softer. Useful gear. I can't really get away from using the "box" because the fascia plate clips to it.

It's called builders strapping, Find it at any hardware store. It'll be in the aisle where all the angle brackets and things are.

Strangely enough our closed-down hardware store reopened this week, but no strapping, I'm looking at getting a Metra mount kit now. I managed to get the stereo mounted, moved it down one DIN- looks stupid, but I could at least get the console surround on, albeit without the fascia plate, which won't fit on.

I found only one antenna lead, but in two parts (i.e. an extender piece plugged in). The antenna booster is in panel behind driver's seat, alongside passenger seat where the seatbelt comes out (the belt retractor and spool is also there).

that is what mine looked like but i pulled all the gps system out when i installed the system. and i had the gps antenna on the parcel shelf mounted next to the sub. As i was saying before if you have those 2 antenna amps mounted under the rear quarter windows that when you have to attach the wire behind the head unit to supply power to them for reception

The radio antenna amp(s) will be found above the roof lining at the rear - pop the rear roof lining down in the centre (back window end) and see.

The 'TV' amplifiers are not radio amplifiers.

Thanks for the pic, Dave. It's all a mystery to me- there's a copper coil thingy behind the panel, near the central locking controller. I assumed it had something to do with the aerial system. My car has (had) fairly basic stereo with no TV, and certainly no EMV as a JZZ-31.
