Soarer came with no stereo to speak of. Crappy Sony one that wasn't running the amp or sub, and the aux/USB/sd inputs didn't work with my iPhone or USB sticks. Great.
Had to replace the climate unit so pulled the old one out and trial fitted my Parrot stereo which is AM/FM and has iPhone hands free and USB input. Looked crap in the dash. Stuck out too far and wasn't a neat fit at all.
I purchased a cheapish double din radio off eBay. I honestly only listen to the radio and as it has an iPod input, it will be connected 100% of the time, so cd/DVD etc features aren't needed but are a bonus. I think the double din will sit in the dash and suit the car better, rather than a blanking plate or a cup holder etc underneath.
I plan on running splits front and rear and a 5 channel amp with a 10" sub, or a 4 channel amp and a bazooka tube, possibly 2. I have one of these in my patrol and it makes adequate bass.
My drama is with the volume knob for the stock radio, my idea is to remove the knob and pull the shaft out, fill the hole with body filler, fill the recess with volume written on it with bog, sand it flat, then spray the whole unit with vinyl spray. I have 2 surrounds, so if I stuff the first one, I will use a sticker (I hate stickers) so its more incentive to make the job right.
Am I on the right path? I can't think or another use for the knob, unless I use it to control subwoofer volume, as the bazooka tubes have an auxiliary volume control.
Can anyone post some pics of what they've done? Is removing the knob hard?

i use the knob as volume control for my car pc, and manual on/ off for it as well. keeps its functions as per factory. search for car pc using the search function of this site.
not sure what use it would provide with a double din unit off ebay. have you pulled the surround off and had a look at what the knob is connected too?

I'm not really looking to put an in car computer into it, I'd never use the functions, to be honest.
I pulled a spare set of knobs apart but feel I may have stuffed them as the wires are soldered onto the pcb not pushed on like I thought and I broke a clip. This was only a practice set, but I have proven the knob can be removed and the hole filled.
I will buy some body filler tomorrow and vinyl spray and fill the hole and then fit another modified dial.
