Can you use the standard soarer aerials when installing a new head unit? My new unit only has the one aerial port, the larger of the two soarer units will plug in but how do I connect the smaller unit. I assume I need both for AM & FM reception. How have other people resolved this issue?

from memory in the "standard "system, the unit switches between the 2 to find the strongest signal.

Try it with just the one and see what the reception is like.

My car is a 1994 SC400 limited, the radio has the CD player in the head unit, unfortunately none of the wiring diagrams I can find show this format. There a two aerial wires and a black with red strip wire that disappear under the carpet.
I am guessing the black with red strip should be powered for the power to the aerial amplifier?

I have worked out all the wires, just need to sort the aerial. Currently have no AM, and weak FM signal. If anyone else has the same factory unit I can post a wiring layout for this unit. If someone else has already done so please let me know so I can confirm my results.

I do not appear to have +12v on the black/red wire that is bundled with the two aerial wires, so I think not.

Easier to put in a modern whip antenna - that's what I did after struggling with the stock antenna for years. Don't regret it at all - I get great reception now.

Bonus was it covered a paint chip that a knobby at the local servo put in the car just above the fuel filler flap (NEVER let these guys near your car!)

You could just as easily roof mount it like most newer cars have them these days though.

Yeah, what Matthew says, easier to put in an antenna.
I too, struggled with the radio reception in the V8, as I have stayed with the EMV set up.
However I ended up replacing the stock head unit in the TT with one of those cheap media players and a rear window mount aerial, reception is brilliant.

Digital DAB isn't worth doing over here (NZ) yet.
I'm not really sure it's going to catch on.
Probably something to do with lay of the land and Govt frequency licensing.

I have access to a DAB radio and check now and then to see if there is any thing new.

I just connected the larger of the two, Jan, when I put a new head unit in. My reception is OK, no worse than it was with old unit and both aerial connected.

You can get an adaptor which will join one big to big & small, for Nissan Patrol I think, but for reception in the bush, not worth it for me. Radio only available at best, 50km from town, around Cobar lucky if 30km.

Thanks, Dave. We're moving to Carnarvon starting Friday so maybe it'll be there too. Not that I have a DAB radio except perhaps in AV amp (but that can be connected to web anyway).
