Woohooo! Finally installed the eBay Chinese El Cheapo deck! Gosh the amounts of problems I've head with this, spent literally two evenings on the weekdays and a couple of hours yesterday. Mounting the darn thing was the problem. I've ended up butchering the deck a little bit so now it sits nice and flush with the console. Basically the problem was with the front plate of the deck (not the actual face, but what's there when the face is detached). While the entire unit is 1DIN in size, the plastic bit that surrounds the face plate is wider on all the sides. Which is perfectly fine vertically, more room for the bigger screen, and it covers the half DIN gap), but horizontally it's not good (the console surround thingy opening for the stereo is too narrow for this). I've tried using the sleeve that came with the unit, didn't look too well as it made the unit literally stick out a centimetre or two from the dash grrrr So only option was to break it off on the side and smooth it out. Once done, tried mouniting again, lining up screws and all on the cage, making custom brackets, put it into the cavity... no space! Goddamn cables behind the friggin unit. Unlike normal headunits where the removable faceplate sits sort of inside the 1DIN measurements, this one was on top of it. Therefore added extra 2 cms lengthwise FARK! Half an hour stuffing around with cables, shifting them here or there with surgical precision in a backbreaking position and finally the cage barely got to the right position to be screwed into the dash. Phew...

Now that it's done I gotta say it actually is quite factory looking, blends in very well. Haven't had a chance to fully test it out yet, so far most of the DivX movies I've tried work on it, picture is nice and clear, MP3z work alright, haven't got the TV antenna or reverse camera in yet so dunno about those, will see in couple of weeks. Sound quality is quite good, not the best in top volume but I'm putting in external amps in for all speakers so this will do. Software is smooth and responsive (a few annoying hickups everynow and then though) and the menu structure and buttons are quite logical. Not bad for 360 bux actually, given that it's fully loaded with features.

I still have to smooth out the edges on the unit, and adjust the little pocket thingy underneath, got some gaps here or there to plug as well. Here's the pics:

Looks pretty good from where I'm sitting Daniel
Filled the gaps nicely I think.

The next thing on my list is to remove ALL the stereo gear from my Skyline and put it into the Soarer.
Not really sure how to cover the gaps around the headunit as it is a Kenwood MASK system, so will have to do a bit of custom work to hide the gap seeing as the Kenwood unit is single din, and those readily available pockets look way to chincy for my liking.
Then there's locating the 12" sub in the boot and the amps while keeping access to the spare.

Man I hate installing stereos

Probably why I quite doing it for a living!

You can get some foam/rubber from Jaycar that will fill out the wholes around your 1din pocket. That will make it even better.

It looks almost as if it was made for the car. Good job (it also looks almost as old which is not necessarily a bad thing).

Ah so you did end up getting that one Daniel. Looking good. Actually that screen is slightly bigger than I though it would be. Nice job and nice install on it.

Cheers guys! Yeah, I'm happy with the install. I gotta plug up the holes too, thanks Benny I will look into that, but I will wait until I connect all the cables in first (gonna have to remove it again probably). And I'm happy with the screen size Will, good enough to watch half an hour of Pimp My Ride on it (I have with not too much eye strain hehe) or something hehe, maybe later down the line I will get a pop out screen, shift the DVD player down to where the pocket is and put the screen under the climate control, will see. Not very eager on watching full length movies in the car though...

I've used it a bit more since and it's not the best unit I must admit, it's very temperamental. The audio adjustments especially, the bass and treble options just disappear after a while, can't get them back until I open the unit, then they come back I don't change those settings that often so I can live with that. Otherwise it's good for the money I've paid...

That is a bit . Don't you have something like a button that you have to depress to get certain features. I discovered quite a number of unknowns (which should have been detailed in the instruction manual).

Grrrr, International manuals......sometimes you can't

Well, the big knob controls volume by default, you can press the knob though, and on the screen it changes to different function - volume, bass, treble, midrange (I think), balance, fader, brightness, sharpness, contrast, colour, hue etc etc. which you then control by twisting the knob. Sometimes the bloody bass and treble options don't come up at all, like it skips them two and goes from volume straight to balance. I then have to open up the face to bring it back. Weird hey! The manual is basic, it doesn't explain the on-screen functions at all, but that can be figured out. It's not a big issue, but it really makes me curious... maybe that's intentional, but I don't see why I wonder what other weird things I will discover in the future hehe

One good feature this deck has is that it remembers each disc that was in it, and what last mp3 was played. So if I play something, take it out, play another mp3 on another disk, and then put the first one in, it goes directly to the last played song. Don't know if this is normal on others as I've never had a car mp3 player before...

Daniel, that sounds to me like it also has a built in EQ.. quite possible you have it set and for that setting it wont allow adjustment until you go back to custom settings..

I'd put my money on that.

That's a nifty feature with that one. The thing that annoys me about my deck is that it will remember the last track played, and will start from the beginning of the track again. I miss my Alpine deck that I used to have that would remember where in the track you were and continue playing from there. Oh well for the price who's complaining hey?

Hey Reepa, you bloody genious!!! That's right, it does have those bs settings like rock and pop etc, i think it cleared when i reset the unit after I opened the face, can't remember now if this cleared because of the reset itself or opening the face. Actually that makes sense now hehe. I must have pressed the EQ button then also to switch it off and didn't realise the coincidence there.

Hey Will, it doesn't start from the middle of the mp3 file though. Only from beginning. Still alright if I got 500 or so short MP3s on the DVD, but not good when I'm half way through listening to a 2 hour PvD live set when I pull into a petrol station

Thought about wiring it into the Power wire of the unit (the red wire) and then using the button to turn it off and on. Wouldn't control the volume though. Also had a strange idea (that isn't feasible) to build a sort of remote control on it for volume control (i.e. sending the same frequency as the remote to the unit). Too hard basket cause I have no idea how I would even go about going down that direction.

The circuit is required as from memory the push button has about 60-70 ohms resistance when pressed.

i ended up spending double the price for my JVC unit which doesnt even have a TV tuner. and i feel im going to run into the same problems. the JVC is worse in the sense that the WHOLE (#*$#@ing face swings out to allow access to the DVD. which means i'll have to gave a annoying gap wether i like it or not :-(

I'd rather have the JVC unit, do you mind swapping? Hehe. Whether it swings out or not doesn't bother me really, I've only changed discs in it maybe 5 times, usually have a DVD mp3 in there. TV I haven't watched yet, even though I paid 60 bux for an antenna, I still ahvent bothered tuning it.

One thing I gotta say is I will never buy non-brand stuff like this from Ebay again. Even though it has nice features it is flawed in many ways that are irritating me like crazy now! For example, on the odd occasion when I plug the face back into the unit, the entire screen just goes all white, and it takes a couple of tries taking the face off and back on again to bring the normal image back. Still can control everything but it is annoying, now I just stopped taking the face off, FARK!!!!! which totally defeats the purpose of me buying this unit in the first place, and not a 7" fixed one!!

Secondly, if I play an audio CD this thing has the shockproofing ever!!! It will skip like crazy with a half decent bump, something that would never happen on my old Kenwood and JVC one, hell, even a stock CD player on the AU Fairmont is heaps better in that regard. Grrrrrr, now I gotta live with this heap of junk for a while. ALl I play is mp3z now as they don't skip, so I guess that is half ok, but still, if I could go back...

Wow Daniel and Joey. I seemed to have dodged the bullet quite well on this one. As you know I have my 6.5/7" fixed screen player (non-brand) and I haven't had anywhere near as many problems as you guys seem to have had thus far.

I don't get any skipping, and this is whether it is a large or small bump or multiple bumps in succession. Also I don't have to worry about the folding face, so disc change over is very simple. Aside from a few minor things, my unit paid off very well and those minor things I can live with (things like starting from the beginning of the song for example).

Daniel I am surprised that you had to pay for the TV antenna, as I got this with the package. Just the price I paid got me everything that I needed.

Now the next upgrade I guess will probably be something like a Car PC and a touch screen monitor in the console

Yeah, I didn't realise that you had yours included with the antenna... looking back I probably should have gotten one like yours. Bugger Oh well, live and learn I guess. Maybe I'll sell it to some sucker at a flea market or something and recoup my costs haha.

The Brash's 2DIN unit seems a better one to me.
http://www.brashimports.com.au/CA1605.htm
I've had no trouble at all with them.
They are an interesting unit as although they are a Chinese knock-off some bits like the DVD drive are genuine Panasonic and work really well. The TV tuner actually works (a first for Chinese technology!!!) and has two antenna inputs with a diversity switch. Radio still has no diversity but seems to be OK.
The screen does have to swing out for access to the DVD drive but it is motorised and supported top and bottom so should last well.
The unit has inputs for reverse camera and radar sensors and they all do work properly.

That's a nice looking one, probably should have gotten that one, if I'm now meant to buy another headunit... Funny you mention the TV tuner, I still cannot tune mine for some reason (I lose patience after 5 mins of clicking each 0.05 Mhz or whatever it is) should get a list with all the channel frequencies, might make it easier.

The thing I like about the Brash unit is that it is touch screen. Although not keen on the silver look myself.

Daniel it's interesting that yours has that drama. I mean I have an auto-tune feature on mine. I get basically every free to air TV station in my car, being 7,9,10,ABC,SBS and Channel 31! Of course the latter 2 are dependant on how good the reception is, but you get that with houses.

Mark, my TV tuner (which is an el-cheapo Ebay brand) works bloody brilliantly even when moving (if need be). Reception is top notch and crystal clear and this is without any additional components, just with the components I got.
