There is a head unit for sale on Ebay. Is stated as a Lexus Premium Sound head unit, desirable. I mailed the seller to tell him he was off the mark because it was not a Nakamichi head, just a standard head as could be bought here for $50. His reply was that I didnt know what I was talking about, and that the Nakamichi is the non standard pov pack. He stated that he works for an importer in Sydney, so his knowledge was correct. I am no expert, but I think Mark will have some comment on this one.

He's full of The ONLY difference between the standard head unit and the Nakamichi is the Lexus and Nakamichi logos on the front panel. The differences in the Nakamichi premium sound system are bigger, better amplifiers and speakers and that's all. The going price for the Naka head unit is US$100 to $200 with an average of around $130 (US).
I'm not aware of anyone bringing in US SC's so therefore they are bringing in parts only i.e. how the hell would he know anyway.

Perhaps he has changed the listing. It makes no claims about Nakamichi. In fact, this is the extent of his claim:
quote:
Has the all important "Lexus - Premium System" written on it in Gold! And if your trying to add a few more Lexus bages [sic] and symbols on your Soarer, this is a Must!!!

In fact those head units are not even made by Nakamichi; they are Pioneer units with a gold badge on the front panel. The Nakamichi part of the system is the nice big amp (US$300 to $400 for one of those....the Yanks know how good they are and they are rare) and possibly speakers.
The one advantage of these head units is that the FM band is the same as ours so no expanders required. The AM band does not work here though. The units also have a few slight differences in controls (you can't navigate backwards thru the CD cartridge like you can with the JDM one....small price to pay for decent FM, and who cares if AM don't work!). At least they are a direct replacement including all the plugs/wiring being the same.
The head unit pictured in the auction is NOT a Naka one anyway. It is the ordinary standard Pioneer system one (no difference anyway except the logo)

Slowly but surely, Gaz. LED conversions are not a straightforward thing especially the first time round so I tend to leave them while doing the more simple repairs. I also want to try a couple of things to see if I can get the AM band working. (if you think yours is taking a while, the first one was claimed by Richard crockett and it's not done yet either!)
