Hey guys, i'm new on here and have browsed through posts but have'nt found anything that quite answers what i need to know. I will be buying a SC400 LTD in a few weeks and am looking to transfer my Audio setup from my old car into my new one. My main concern is will i have any trouble's fitting my headunit under the EMV? Is it hard to replace the stock tape-deck with an aftermarket unit? Also, does anyone know of someone who would do custom fibreglass doormoulds in melbourne?....since i've got a 3-way front splits
It's impossible to replace the tape deck as it is integrated somehow with the rest of the EMV. But you can add a deck below the tape player where you got the ashtray I guess. Mark Paddick will be able to help you more with this. This has been covered before many times though so maybe you didn't search right...

If the stereo you have is that good then you would be better off to get a car without EMV, there are plenty around. Or rip the whole lot out; I'm always looking for spare EMVs.

It's certainly not impossible but it isn't easy if you want to retain the function of the EMV audio. The tape player can be moved and hidden away but it must be retained for the EMV audio to work. I've seen a few cars with an aftermarket unit in place of the tape player but none of the EMV audio functions work.

I have got a premium stereo in Goldy with the EMV, but removed the EMV audio ability. I found that if you are going to install a good quality stereo you wouldn't want the EMV tape deck etc.
I have the headunit in the spot just below the EMV and above the ashtray. By removing the buttons and relocating them there is just enough room. To get this done we completely gutted the car and replaced all the wiring. MB Quartz speakers in the doors and 2 subs and amp in the boot.
I have kept all the components that were removed so if in the future when I sell her the new owners have a choice of returning her to stock.

Here's what I did.
(yes yes, old thread - but still relevant today!)
1991 V8 UZZ31 with EMV.
EMV screen was wonky - not letting you push all areas of screen and also stereo couldn't pick up Australian radio, etc.
I bought a crappy single din $40 JBS headset. 55w per channel, 220w in total. Works fine. It plays usb, mp3, aux, smart phones, has mic in, and so on. A $40 unit makes the stock system obsolete. There is no reason to have the cd stacker and stock tape deck in the car in 2014, so it's not a big loss to remove and store the items
I bought a 300w Sony xplode amp also.
I removed the tape deck thing along with ashtray. I removed the stacker and factory amp from boot. I put the new head unit in and hooked it up. You have to cut from the boot - not the front.
I only have a single channel amp - So the tweeters don't work right now. This probably won't be fixed. Sounds great as is.
- Head unit is wired to the 4 speakers. - Amp is controlling sub. - Tweeters are not working.
Otherwise, audio is spot on!
If you wired front speakers and tweeters to head unit, and rear speakers and factory subwoofer to a double channel amp, you'll be set
You use the new headunit to control all audio features - and you use the EMV screen to display air con controls. The volume knob on the dash (for emv) is now useless.
Note how my ashtray has been left out as it wouldn't fit back in once the headunit was installed. Cbf making it fit either - So, now looking for a cover

I had a single din Sony xplod deck in my old uzz31 and still was able to have the ashtray in, was a tight fit but could still open the ashtray lid by helping it a bit.
