Hi Guys,

I got my stereo installed a while back and ive been pretty happy with it so far.

Yet a few days ago i listed to a mate's system who was using the same amp a 15" sub like me (sub was different brand) and it was in a falcon.

I know that its hard to compare apples with oranges BUT he got me thinkin about sumfin.

I have a Pioneer 1000w mono block amp
http://www.pioneer.com.au/car_entertainment/amplifiers/gmd510m/index.html

and a kicker 15" CVR 2 ohm.

*** Question ***

I think my system is not matched up correctly as i have a mono block amp that is running at 4ohm but my sub can only run at 2 ohm (well it says 2 ohm on the box)

Is that correct ? Im thinkin that im not gettin the full potential outta my AMP as it cant deliver the right power to my Sub.

Ive also just found out Kicker has just released a NEW kicker CVR 15 that can/does run at 4ohm.
05CVR15 - D4

Would i be better just buyin one of those and swappin the sub over ?

I dont really wanna buy another amp as then i have to play with wires and get it out from where its mounted,

i look forward to any kinda help * im not really down with car stereos, i know the basics but thats bout it.

* ive attached some pics but note - JL sub has been replaced with what i have now CVR 15

James I have the same amp as you do BUT i'm running the 2 pioneer 12's Alot has to do with the size of your box I will say Doesn't look like there is sufficent room in there for the sub to run at a peak performance.

Also have to think that the bass has to go through a fuel tank and back seat for you to feel it.

hmmmm...

regarding the box - its is suprising large, it goes all the way to the skin of the panel and up towards the rear seat kinda also. Its all been sealed with fibreglass also

*bad luck to whoever runs into my rear right quater panel, some damage will be done

* regarding the rear seat etc - i dont know if it helped but i also removed the bits that can be pushed out IF my car had a stocko sub and two other bits on the parcel shelf to help.

Yeah it's all about displacement of air though daniel. I think from memory my 12's need an 87litre box But yeah it takes up the majority of my boot. at the moment.

That amp will work fine into a 2 ohm load.
In fact that's where it gets its' 1000W rating, it only makes 600W into 4 ohms......which leads me to think its' power supply section could be better; it should make double power into half the impedance load i.e. 1200W rather than 1000 (power = I x I x R so if load is half then current is double and current squared is quadruple and power is double). The figures tell me that the amps power supply can't supply the double current. This is not uncommon, there are not that many amps that can do it (the Jaycar 2 x 150W being the only cheap one I know of) as the uprated power supply needed would be very expensive.
Also the amp is fitted with 2 x 25A fuses which does make me wonder about its' ratings. That would give an input power somewhere around 700 Watts ABSOLUTE Maximum so where does the 1000W output come from??? Given an efficiency of somewhere around 85% an output of 600Watts is feasable but 1000W is impossible to say the least.
Unless of course they are "advertising" watts which they obviously must be. in fact reading the specs further we find that the real output powers are 300WRMS into 4 ohms and 500WRMS into 2 ohms which makes a lot more sense ...and just happens to be exactly the same as the Jaycar amp (except the Jaycar exceeds its' specs and can make nearly 600WRMS into 2 ohms....maybe this one can too).

The Pioneer is one of the better amps regardless of whether its' power output is real but beware of driving it too hard. An amplifier driven into clipping is what kills most speakers.

Mark - that hurt my brain to read ! hah. Cheers for the info, im not really down with stereo but ill take note of what you have said and maybe speak with a stereo guy face 2 face to get a better idea on what to do.

Justin-

you can grab that kinda stuff at hardware stores hey, ive seen it in a few places.

Its just steel that can be bent really easily. Make up simple brackets (as seen)

** mind you - i didnt do the stereo in my soarer, WOW sight n sound did. BUt im sure if you browsed a place you could find some or similar

**** still interested if anybody has any other feedback / points to note etc.

The GM-D510 will put out a continous 500WRMS into 2 Ohms.

If you wire the sub to present a 2 ohm load to the amp. Then that is as much power as you will get out of it. Perhaps a different box will help more.

If your looking to get rid of that box, depending on the size. Im interested!
