Hi guys.. have been toying with an idea..

Would it be possible (worthwhile) installing an aftermarket deck at the bottom and running in conjunction with EMV.. By this I mean: I have a Sony MEXR1 DVD deck (no screen). Theoretically I should be able to install the deck under the tape deck, Run the aerial cable to the MEXR1, disconnect the SPEAKER wires from the EMV and run them to the Sony deck. This way I should be able to use the Video out to the modified video in on the EMV, still be able to utilise the Climate control etc and be able to, at a later stage if need be, run different amps and be able to do a better setup in the boot now that the stacker would no longer be required.. This would also allow me to have access to loading a disc from the front and also the AUX input for my MP3 player (and still have tone control..).

Am I a bit left of centre here or would this be a feasable option..

Now, I know the standard system on these are very good, but I don;t like the idea of having a seperate DVD source and having no tone control due to the TV inputs..

Your opinios please..!!

Sounds feasable to me. I'm running my iPod through the TV's video and audio inputs at the moment, and sometimes run my PS2 in the car, but all still amped through the factory setup.

DVD player i bought it two years ago for $180 and the Vlad radio conversion cost $500.

Now i used the DVD player just to play mp3z and i have 8.5GB of songs!!

Sounds good mate.. But using a DVD player that is a tuner etc (all-in-one) would be better me-thinks so that you would then be able to use (using the MEXR1) the 7-Band graphic equaliser and the seperate higher volt RCA outputs including sub control..

I guess i'm just asking if anyone knows if doing this actually affects the EMV in anyway?? I know it can be done, I just don't want to stuff up any climate controls or anything of that nature..!!
And also people opinions on doing so.. ie. Pros and Cons..??

In case you're wondering... no.. I don't have my soarer yet.. but it is literally weeks away and I have been planning for a while..!!

Well, you want to keep the tape player connected as that is central to controlling all the other modules. Just running your DVD player through the TV inputs into the EMV will not affect the operation of the climate control, or trip computer, as long as you keep the tape player module.

- Just wire it up as follows:
http://members.westnet.com.au/web/rbaird/dvdinstall.htm

- Keep everything else except the amps and tv tuner module hooked up as is.

And you shouldn't have any problems that I can see. I've disconnected the tv tuner module in the past without causing any problems.

I agree with you that using the all-in-one unit is a good idea. As you say, it should give you more flexibility in the audio equipment that you can connect to it. The only problem I have with your setup is that you're using Sony...

You can replace the whole stereo and remove the tape player but you won't then be able to use the EMV screen for video. All the A/C controls and trip meter etc will be unaffected.

Hehe.. ordinarily I would agree with you..! But this unit IS actually quite good! It also has seperate rear video out.. It has 3 sets of high volt pre-outs, DTS Dolby etc etc.. Besides.. I WON IT FROM SONY!! So free makes it good!!

Basically, yes! But moreover, does anyone think that this idea is of any use.. ie. worth my while..??

I was planning on leaving the tape player there, still powered obviously, just not have any speaker wires attached or aerial attached...

Yeah, I think it's a great idea!! If you want to install a couple of decent amps, good quality splits in the front, and a decent amped sub somewhere in the rear (please no 6 X 9's) then in my opinion it is much better than modifying the existing setup. Probably not so worthwhile if you're only doing a half-a$$ed job.

Thanks for clarifying, Mark. I've had issues with noise from wiring in audio through the TV input, but you avoid that completely since your audio will be independent. Like Mark said, you'll need to keep the tape player for video into the EMV.

And free is good!!

I think its a good idea too however there isnt enough room for a head unit where the ashtray is.
Ive seen head units mounted where the tape deck is and then just the face of the tape deck placed where the ashtray is, just to retain the use of the buttons.

Sorry.. Been on holidays for 2 weeks in Norfolk Island.. I actually saw a Soarer there!!

I was planning to do a similar job as is done on a picture in a different thread (I think it was Joe's) whereby the tape deck was re-located down to where the ashtray was and put the deck under the EMV.. but I also noted on that same thread that Mark said it is a Bitch if a job.. So if it comes down to it I may end up just putting the deck in the glove box like most others and use one of Sony's controller units to control with the glove box closed..

Definitely NOT..!! I have a form of Sponsorship deal through MTX.. (basically I just get stuff significantly cheaper..) So set up will be not massive by any stretch, more classy and stealth, aiming for a more pure sound than big db.

Btw.. I actually quite like 6x9's in the rear (not that I would in a soarer due to space constraints) but in a car that has the space for them I believe that you get an excellent mid-range due to the cone size.. But obviously quality makes the difference here!

That woulda been Mike Trigg's car, he has a 97 3.0 & a 94 3.0, and he's a long term member of ALSC.
