Hey guys, Just re-did my parcel shelf the other day to install my j car 10" sub. My car came with the standard speakers and no sub so i decided to build a new back parcel shelf to accommodate the new sub and speakers. This is how it turned out.

The shelf was pretty easy to make, i didn't make any plans at all, just took the normal shelf and traced it onto a pretty thick piece of mdf board. You don't have to trace it exact, just roughly, then cut the edges off a bit to make it fit. Then you glue a piece of vinyl over it and cut it to shape, leave some vinyl hanging of the edges so that once you put the shelf in, you can tuck the vinyl in around the sides where the normal shelf would curb under. Also you will have to make a spacer for the sub to sit a bit higher, I left mine unpainted and sanded it to make it look smoother, the natural colour blended in well. This was my first attempt at this and it was easier than I thought, hope this can help you guys.

Hey Daniel.
Ive been thinking about 6x9s fitting in the parcel shelf. I want to do that in the future with the 10inch Pioneer Sub i bought of you earlier this year.
How did you get the 6x9s in there? Any Pics?
BTW Luis the rear shelf looks excellent. Start making copies mate ;)

The new setup sounds really awesome, the shelf is just been held down by the weight of the sub and speakers, and i placed a piece of that foam sound proofing material between the shelf and metal of the car. Its totally solid and doesn't move around or rattle. I also have a 12" kicker solobarac sub in the boot, run by a kenwood excellon 1600 watt amp, and another 600 watt amp running the four speakers. My problem now is that I'm getting major power drain from the system, would a capacitor fix that? or maybe a second battery?
Shane: I also used to have 6X9's in the original shelf but decided to go with some good quality 6" speakers instead. Fitting 6X9's was easy all you need is some spacers which you can get from repco, then they fit pretty good.

Fitting a capacitor in your system wont really help with the power drain. They will obviously hold charge but are generally there to act as a stiffening cap to make sure your speakers receive the power they want when a transient hits. You would be better off with a larger battery, or better still a second battery if you can fit one in. I always use an Optima battery as they never give me any problems, regardless of the system I am running. http://www.optimabatteries.com.au/

Guys, I'd highly recommend laying off 6x9s if you are/are planning to run a sub. If you want all out volume, then its not to bad, but you'll be sadly dissapointed if you're after high quality sound.
You NEVER run 2 different sized subs together as the bass waves will fight each other due to the different sizes of the cones. 6x9s are big enough (and especially if amped) to be classed as a 'sub' of sorts, especially with the quality of their crossovers these days.
I have sampled this theory first hand in a few mates cars and that was definiative proof. Not to mention the fact that my electronics lecturer was a mad audio nut and agrees too!

hey, Luis Ramirez do you have all the measurements needed to make that shelf? it look hot as! and i bet making a more sterdy shelf got rid of any vibrations and stuff at the same time as looking great

Hey Josh, I didn't take any measurements, just traced the old parcel shelf onto the mdf board and cut. It was a bit hard to fit in, so you have to cut bits off the sides until you get it to fit properly.
