Why Register?

Registering is free and offers several advantages.

As well as all the normal functionality, registered members get the additional following features.

  • New posts - check for only new posts since you last checked.
  • Profile - Maintain your own profile telling people a little about you and your car etc. You can include a picture in your profile.
  • Members List - check the members list, sorted by name, car model, location, etc.
  • Posting - you need to be a registered member to post to the forum. We don't allow unregistered posting to reduce the potential for mischief.
  • Reply to Posts - as above.
  • Edit your Posts - Within 24 hours
  • Private Messaging - To other registered members.
  • Email Notification - Alerts you via email of new posts in your favourite topics, or replies to your own posts.

To register, you will need to specify a username and password, and a valid email address. Entering your email address will not leave you open to 'spam', as you can choose to hide your email address, and messages sent to you via email do not reveal your address to the sender in any case. (To verify this, you can try sending an email message to another user.) The registration process is confirmed by email, so ensure that the email address you provide is valid and working.

Why can't I post?

Posting is restricted to registered users only - go ahead, it's free to register!

Some areas for example the Tutorials don't allow user posting.

Other advantages of registering are listed
above.

How do I check for new posts?

In the top bar menu, clicking on Upload Posts will show you a lit of all new postings since you last checked. This feature only works for registered members as otherwise the system can't track when you last checked.

In the left column, Upload also signifies new posts, and if you click in the left column rather than on the actual topic, the post will open in a new window so you don't need to use the Back button to return to the list.

How do I check for Recent Posts?

The 1| 3| 7 Days on the top menu provides a quick way to see posts made in the last day, in the last 3 days, or in the last week.

Using this or Upload Posts is a lot easier than going to each topic to check for recent postings if you are a regular reader.

What is "Tree View"?

Tree view simply provides an expandable text list of Topics, Sub-topics and posts, much like in Windows Explorer.

Selecting Topics on the top menu bar will return you to the normal graphical presentation.

What is Rating/Votes about?

If you see a particularly good post, you can give it a rating to show other people how helpful that post is.

The scores are averaged out, so the more people that vote, the more accurate the rating.

Be aware that voting is limited to 1 vote per hour, so make them count.

How do I post an image?

To add an image to your post, simply click on the attachment Upload icon above the edit box, then browse to locate the file you want inserted into the post.

You can upload up to 4 images or files at a time.

You must have java enabled on your browser and deactivate any pop-up stopper software you might have running in order for this feature to work properly.

The maximum image size is 800 pixels wide and any uploaded file or image must be 150kb or less.

What is the spell checker?

The spell checker in Preview alerts you to possibly misspelt words. Some words that are correctly spelt may get caught occasionally due to the fact that there are a a lot of words that might be specific to this forum, but new words are often added. The spell checker can't correct the words for you however.

For IE users, you can add a nice Spell checker (with suggested corrections) from
http://www.iespell.com/

For Firefox, try here: http://spellbound.sourceforge.net/installation

Be aware that both have a lot of Americanisation in them, eg "nite", "color" etc.

What is Email Notification in my profile?

Email Notification allows you to get notified of new posts to specific Topic groups, or replies to your own posts etc.

This feature is only available to Registered users.

You may configure your account to send out new messages on the boards as e-mail messages to your address. This is the best way to stay up to date on new messages and conversations taking place online, without having to visit the forum each time. If your e-mail client allows you to read messages off line, receiving posts in e-mail means you can also browse through new posts off line. This function is called 'Automatic E-Mail Notification' (as a clarification, the e-mail messages do contain the full text of the posts; they do not simply notify you that a post has been made).

To configure E-Mail Notification:

1. Go to the Profile Editor to edit your profile. Enter your username and password when prompted, to enter your profile editor page.

2. Scroll down to the section entitled 'E-Mail Notification'. Here you will find two tables: the first containing a list of topics (major sections of the message boards) on SoarerCentral to which you have access. The second table contains additional options.

3. In the first table, place a tick in the boxes of all those topics for which you wish to receive new posts as e-mail messages.

New messages posted in all of the threads under a given topic will be sent to your e-mail address if you select that topic for e-mail notification. You may always return to the Profile Editor and change these settings at any time if you wish to disable e-mail notification for certain topics or altogether.

4. In the second table, three options are available that apply to the E-Mail Notification settings for your account:

Tick My own posts if you wish to receive e-mail messages containing posts that you make to the board. This is a helpful feature if you wish to keep a record of your own contributions.

Tick Replies to my posts if you wish to receive e-mail versions of posts made in direct response to a message you posted to the board. This feature overrides the topic selection setting from the first table (i.e., if you have chosen not to receive e-mail notification for a certain topic, but you have selected the 'Replies to my posts' option and posted a message to that topic, you will receive e-mail notification of replies to your message). Note: If you have this option selected, you will receive only the first response to messages you posted in topics for which you do not have general e-mail notification enabled: you will not continue to receive ongoing discussion via e-mail.

Tick Send e-mail notification as HTML text rather than plain text if you wish e-mail versions of message board posts to be formatted as HTML e-mails, rather than plain-text. It is strongly recommended that you select this option. You should only de-select it (i.e., opt for plain-text messages) if you find that your e-mail client does not support HTML messages: several features of the e-mail messages are lost in plain-text format.

5. Click the Save Profile Changes button to save your changes. Your new email notification settings will take effect immediately for all future posts.

What are "Moderators"?

Moderators are the people who kindly donate their time to ensure the smooth running of this system.

They are usually happy to help with questions and can also delete posts and block users that get out of line.

Be nice to them, and life will be good :-)

What is "Eye Candy"?

Just a little bit of soft porn to keep you tittilated.

It changes every few minutes, so if it changes a couple of times you have been online too long!

Click on "safe list"
Add "soarercentral.com" (without the quotes) to your safe list

Yahoo Users: Please do the following:

Click on "Filters"
To the right of "From header contains," type "soarercentral.com" (without the quotes) to the right of "Then... Move the message to," select "Inbox"
Click the "Add Filter" button

AOL Users: Please add "soarercentral.com" (without the quotes) to your address book.

Microsoft Outlook users: Reading your email with Outlook 2003? You might want to tweak your settings to make sure all the images in the email appear correctly. Just add "soarercentral.com" (without the quotes) to your Safe Senders list.
