I want to get an aftermarket muffler and tip but im not sure of any good places to buy it from or get it installed at a good price. Can someone recommend a type of muffler and tip e.g. 3.5" or 4" etc. that would sound good, look good, and increase performance?. And any other info that would help me would be great.
Thanks, Michael.

Do you really want a 4" tip? It will look like a riced WRX! :-)
HA!
Michael, You have a really nice JZZ31 I reckon to make it even better, if you willing to part with the money (budgeting around $500-750AUD) Get a pair of double offset Lukey mufflers, the Ultra Flo ones in stainless steel. 2.0" ones should be enough, then go 2" to a Y join into a 2.50" single, with a resonator up to the factory cat. For tips, take off your stock stainless ones and get some metal polish. You will be surprised at how good they can look - then get them refitted.
This is what I was going to do on my JZZ31 originally. They can sound hot with the right work! If its too loud you can get another resonator put in.

This is on a diesel Hilux but applicable to any car, I'd think. The Hilux did have other work besides new exhaust.
It would seem for a JZZ31 that the Vortex would be mounted up the front where the current front resonator is, then straight pipe to a Y-joint and then pipe to two resonators at the rear.
With the site down can't link, but from memory prices were in the $AU220-350 range depending on inlet size, muffler length (longer for bigger motors), and whether stainless or mild steel. As far as I know they are made here in Oz, and are unlike the Cherry Bomb vortex design from US.

More on Vortex: This would seem a relatively cheap way to build a new twin system, as the Vortex itself is little more than the price of one Lukey or similar, and the rear needs only two resonators which are relatively cheap, and presumably the std rear tips can be retained.
I'm looking at replacing my system sometime, and want the system to be lighter, slightly more sporty in sound, and hopefully give a little better economy and power. The std system seems awfully restrictive, and despite being allegedly stainless steel, on our car at least is rusting quite noticeably.
I agree with Mike (B) too that all the std rear tips require is a decent polish and they look pretty schmick.

I'm just going to remove the cat from mine - I figure thats got to make a huge difference and won't cost much at all.
I'm pretty sure that's illegal over here. I contemplated doing just that with a Levin we once owned on Norfolk- in this case so we could use Avgas as the local fuel at that time was pretty crappy for a 10.5 or 11.0 to one compression engine. Ended up selling the car though. What happens to the O2 sensor?
Not sure about earlier Jzz31s, but our '97 has two cats and two O2 sensors.

Definitely two on our VVTi, Matthew. The extractors each have three pipes going into one cat, with an O2sensor to each cat. Then the pipes from the cats go into a "Y" junction into single pipe to the front resonator or whatever it is.

Ha!
This is what I was going to do with my 3.0GT, but that sure wont be happening now.
I really do like the 2JZ soundtrack... its on par with the V8 to an extent... very smooth and seductive... But the V8 always has the extra special place in my ear.
I would get them removed completely though Matt, as you can take them to a wrecker and get $X for each of them! You might be surprised...
By gutting them you get that horrid empty-chamber resonating sound!

Yes, I've always liked the sound of a straight 6, plus they are so smooth at idle.
Thats what I figured, better to put proper steel pipes in and avoid the tinny drone. but what do I do with the O2 sensors? Won't i have issues with overfueling if I leave them disconnected? Or is there a fuse I can pull or something?

Thats good news then. One of these days I'll get around to it when I have some spare cash to give the exhaust guy. Now the Soarer's not being used at all as a family transport I can do what I want with it I guess.
