Could someone be able to tell me why my uncles soarer looses nearly all power when it warms up ? Its a 1998 3.0 ltr VVTI with 48,000 km and ran perfectly until 3 days ago. Are there any good soarer mechanics in Adelaide ? Thanks

The late '97 on don't have a distributor.
Can't really help much, Paul. As Matthew says, sounds electrical (fuel pump?).
Out VVTi runs fantastically, but I'm unhappy with the fuel economy. Had the O2 sensors checked out, told OK. Is this a possibility for Paul's uncle's car?

Thanks guys for your help. I think you might be right mike regarding the O2 sensor so will get that checked out . Because Im on the gold coast dont really know any reliable mechanics in Adelaide so was wondering if anyone has a suggestion ? Never had this problem before and is really unusual. When the car is cold it runs perfectly but after it heats up you have to put the accelarator nearly to the floor to get any response.

Paul, any competent mechanic should be able to check out O2 sensors (there are two on VVTi engine). It's just a matter of reading voltages with motor running.
Another possibility is coil packs or plug leads- the former can break down under load, but still allow starting. Again, a competent mechanic can diagnose this. I've had all this checked out, and only think mechanic said was to replace fuel filter, had it done but made no difference to poor economy.
There is definitely something amiss with your uncle's car though!

Could such a power loss be caused by putting regular unleaded into the car - especially if its the late model VVTI 3ltr engine ?
Unlikely, Paul, with engine management (and twin knock sensors) the only difference should be power (as management retards spark). I've run our car on 95 octane, because it was all I could get locally, and there was no noticeable difference (except perhaps economy- but a recent long run mostly on 98 was no better).

Daniel, ethanol has no effect on performance if the engine is designed to run on 91 octane. There might be a slight drop in economy, that's all. Any 91 in Soarer will cause a performance loss, one would think. I've never tried it. There's no ethanol in fuel over in WA but I used ethanol in a Lancer in Tas recently, no problems.

Just had the problem fixed . My uncle took the car to lexus adelaide and they diagnosed it as the accelerator sensor . They said it is has happened before even on cars that have travelled less than 5,000km . Cost $700.
