Hey guys (not sure if i've posted this in the right section),

Was getting the good ol' click on my 1JZGTE + occasional poor hot start, so I decided to take out the starter and give it a clean.

No dramas with removal, re-assembling and installing. But on start-up, the starter appears to be spinning the moment I connect the battery and supply power to the motor, so I immediately disconnect.

Could the solenoid be damaged or stuck? I'll also check the starter relay. I checked all the contacts and none of the wiring paths/polarities were interrupted or changed.

Also, after some curious googling about starters I noticed that the design of mine was different from all the pictures of the 1JZ/2JZ/7M, both in general size and design + the clutch assembly/gear oh mine has a hood on it? From my understanding the 1JZ/2JZ starters are interchangeable if not the same? And that the 7MGTE ones can be used but require nuts on the bolts to mount; however this looks quite different.

Any thoughts?
Cheers,
- Dan.

That's odd... could be the solenoid, but unless the drive pinion is engaged with the ring gear (ie, the solenoid is stuck "open") it won't be acting as a relay... then again the starter should not operate at all until the solenoid is engaged as power won't get through... perhaps something has been shorted by the cleaning process?

The starter in your picture looks much the same as the one on my car. The one in the other link looks really odd.

As Matthew said its odd, i would say as He said the starter motor solenoid is Now U/S for some reasoion or you are connecting the battery main wire to the bottom main terminal on the Solonoid, which feeds into the starter, but sounds like you understand how it all works so I would doubt that mix up on your behalf ..

Usually the fix for the intial fault you had is to fit a relay to the starter solenoid trigger wiring ..

Thanks for the all the replies guys. Spot on the money; it turned out to be the solenoid. All fixed and back in business.

I took it back apart, and I think the problem might have been that the solenoid engagement pin was not past the lever/shift-fork on the motor side. As mentioned by Matthew, it still seemed odd that the starter was operating, regardless of engagement pin.

Either way, its all refurb'd, carefully re-assembling and so far working great. Thanks for the tip as well Robert about the relay. It makes sense and since I've got the car up and my head in the area, I'll be looking in to it.

Cheers,
- Dan.
