I have a 96 JZZ31 with a non VVTi 2JZ motor.
It has been running perfect but all of a sudden it has started to miss intermittently and has been running rich with black smoke coming out the exhaust. The idle goes up and down, like it surges.

I have changed the fuel controller module. No change.
I have changed the spark plugs. No change
I have taken off and cleaned the IACV. No change.

Now I am a bit puzzled.

Anyone had this experience or have any ideas?

I had that thought at the back of my mind. Hope not. A trip to Nam's and no car for a week. Here we go again....

Old cars. Sounds like you have hit most of the usual suspects - your car is the same age & model as mine and I've not yet had any problems with my ECU, though I live in a milder climate that is probably not as harsh on electronics. Last time I had problems with missing, it was a couple of broken HT lead clips at the cap end, and the leads were just loose enough to cause odd misfires. I just replaced teh whole lot, and did the distributor rotor at the same time as it was pretty worn and problems solved - but sounds like you would have noticed that.
