Hmmm well since Ive decided it would be most foolish to sell the soarer, so I was curious to have a play around with something I had not yet... so I went to see what its like with out the spoiler! Far out, was it dirty under there!

HAHA, It's okay Darryn, my leaky power steering pump was rebuilt when the car had 120,500kms :-)

Thats what happens when you buy a well looked after and serviced soarer! All the better reason to keep it....

Does show how good your paint is Mike, you can't see the difference between the paint thats been covered its whole life and the exposed paint!

I know! I was expecting it to be even more green & rich, but it was just exactly same. Just goes to show how decent the quality of the paint really is! :-)

Huge step of from that horrible faded Red Honda paint on the Rafaga which you saw...

Red is one of the worst colours for oxidising too, which probably didn't help.

Exactly Matt. I wonder how yours will be since its also Red. The fact its darker and much better quality may help considerably... You should have a look some time. :-)

My bonnet is certainly starting to oxidise, but as long as I keep it polished and waxed you can't tell. I might get it resprayed depending on how long I'll keep the car for. Otherwise no signs of it yet.

Well, sadly it's been Sold...

As much as I hated to it was the most practical thing to do. Rather sad to see it go however, amount of time and satisfaction I had with the car makes the money I got for it bitter sweet really.

Still I managed to receive $7,000 from Purchasing it 6 Months ago at $5,500. I decided not to but this previously interested person contacted me a few days ago & offered $1k more from his original price of 6, to 7k...

Worse part was seeing it go up the drive and hearing that beautiful exhaust fade away into the distance....

.

Still you just have to move on from somethings. I know it was for the best

Yesss, well It was very hard to sell it. More than just a car to me, but it was wise to move on.

I was having trouble with the cats and fuel igniting a few days ago which I managed to sort out. As a result I had to smash out the ceramics in the cats and fiddle around with the electrics but all was fine after an appropriate test drive... A sign of how they can be quite costly when things go wrong, I was lucky it was fixable!

Then that nasty dent occurred, $700 fix which would have been a nightmare really to swap all the door parts over and to fork out the money. Next Id would have really started to think about replacing parts such as the recommended things like trans/ engine amounts mounts, bushes and shocks which all mount up to a high cost wise especially in NZ compared to Aussie!

However as you know insurance was the biggest part in the sale it just was not practical. To insure it at 7k I was looking close to under $2000! So at my age it just did not suit...

Still I've had my use about of it, did what I wanted and was very happy with the purchase - Id buy a Toyota/Lexus one day (few years) when I can insure and run it completely. Maybe a 2nd gen Celsior or 3.0gt something newer but not a 1991 soarer unless it was mint and tidy!

At the moment I'm looking at some more practical cars for my age that insurable... Ive always been interested in the Honda Prelude 5th Gens, with the rather Japanese styled front. For some reason Ive always found them quite a nice overall vehicle and heard good thing about them, one I test drove was rather nice. They seem comfortable and very well built, especially around the doors - so nice to have a solid light weight door that doesn't flex or develop cracks. Id definitely go for a Vtec manual version, not the stupid tip-tronic system - total waste of a car!

Fortunately Ive been talking to my Uncle which Is a Car Wholesaler. Hes the same man I got that tidy Honda Rafaga from.... I inquired about Preludes and he noted that while down in Hamilton he saw a Gold 1997 or 8 Prelude, SIR Vtec in Manual with low Kms around 80 or so just imported. He though what a nice car that was, it's valued right in under my price range as well! Hes going to find more about it tomorrow and if it sounds good I'll pop down and have a look. Best part is these are quite insurable at around the 1k Per year for a 6k insured sum so thats a good sign. Tomorrow I will fill in the details as they come in regarding this car, hopefully it will be decent.

At the end of the day though, Quite pleased the soarers gone though, a new car will be much appreciated and received the obsessive care I gave to my Soarer. :-)

Mike, how about a Toyota Levin? At 1.6 litres, damn light on the pocket, and the manual 5 and 6 speed models are very swift too, they handle well, plus they bear some family resemblence to the Soarer. All the reliability of a Toyota Corolla, and share a lot of parts so are cheap to fix in the unlikely event that anything does go wrong. Plenty of nice late '90's models available in your price range too.

Take one for a drive and compare it to the Prelude, which will cost you more to run and a lot more to insure.

Haha, Matt Definitely not a Levin, cant stand them. Far to small, not enough torque or styling. Just a bland car really. Ive been in a few later model ones and I just cant get over how boring and noisy they are...

Preludes are far better especially the ones Ive been in. Interior is excellent and comfortable, has some size to the car plus a proper motor at 2.2L & Vtec.

I saw a project AE 85 on Trademe with an S2000 engine waiting to go in. :-)
The 96-> Levins are bland, but you can't go past a nice 94 GT with 2 stage variable valve timing. Wanna swap?

Yeah, they are rather noisy around town - not too bad on the open road though. I don't think they are bland, better looking than the 97's Preludes with those horrible square headlights. Still I don't really like driving my wife's Levin much, but then it is the bottom of the line auto (and it's still pretty quick for a 1600CC auto!)

Prelude's are pretty heavy though, around 1400kg's from memory, though the earlier models may be a bit lighter - no doubt the VTEC models are quick, not a lot of pre '97's around with VTEC though, and the ones without are pretty sluggish.

Haha, Well actually the BB6 model which are the later 1997+ Square headlight models are around the low 1200kg bracket, pump out 200HP and have 218NM of torque. Coupled with a manual they are quite good would give my soarer when it was stock a run, Would be quite interesting to see thinking about it now...

While I had that Rafaga, during a Honda Club meet I went in a guys near stock SIR prelude 97' and it sure had plenty of go in it, even compared to the Soarer now thinking about it would have been rather close, still that prelude made my Rafaga feel like a dog which is was being 1300kg and having only 158hp, however it could still get to 100 in the high 8 second zone just with a simple BFI. :-)

Yeah true but Ive always liked Toyota and Hondas...

No other car brands really appeal to me... Nissans are okay, but nothing really exciting there. The rest, like Mazda and Mitsubishi I wouldn't even touch...

Modern Honda's are very reliable, pretty equivalent to Toyota's and they have even improved their tendency to have plastic bits snap off inside from what I hear (which is what my one and only Honda was really good at)
