Just thought I'd put in a recommendation for Rowes Tyres in Rosebank Road Avondale.

They did a wheel alignment for me this morning. Many of the alignment nuts were ceased and it was clear the car had not been aligned in a very, very long time. They spent 2 hours freeing up all the bolts and aligning the car, and have now got it perfectly aligned to factory standards, according to the report. The car certainly feels good on the road anyway!

Not the cheapest alignment I've ever had at $65, but definitely one of the best.

Also very happy for me to wander around under the car so I made the most of it and checked out all the mounts and bushes I could. Surprisingly everything looks OK.

$65 for a 4 wheel alignment is pretty good.

$65 for 2 hours labour doing anything is very good!

Yeah, I figured that too. I've known the manager there for about 15 years mind you so he usually does give me good rates on stuff.

He an immaculate '95 928 Porsche - which I believe is a 5.7 litre V8. Maybe I can convince him to let me take it for a drive sometime

Cheers Matt.

My alignment seems a touch out, pulls to the left and hopefully he'll be just as good to me with prices.

I'll get in touch and get them to look at mine as they're 2 minutes away from me.

The 928 was a luxo Porsche was it not? Keep working on him... Talk up the Soarer, wear him down and you could do a swap day or something =)

Yes, it looks pretty cushie inside, though somewhat more cramped tan the Soarer. I think he'd be a bit disapointed driving my little 3 litre though! Mind you, its pretty ugly compared to the Soarer (I love the wheels though)

Bruce, the manager's name is Steve Rowe if you are heading down there. They have quite a nice office area to wait in too (lucky for me having to wait 2 hours!)

Or perhaps the 92x/94x etc are the only Porsches with the engines in the RIGHT place? Certainly better than a Squashed VW 911 anyway. Though I do admire their engineering, damn they make ugly, ugly cars. And someone should by shot for the Cyanne.

There's a reason the 911 Design has changed so little over the years.

Well, I don't like Beatles either, and millions of people think they are cute as hell, so yeah totally accept that.

I do however admire Porsche for their high standards of engineering. About the only German manufacturer that hasn't let their standards crash.

It is a Cayenne, not a Cayanne, and the Beatles were a rock group half of whom are dead, not a Volkswagen. The Porsche 928 ceased production in 1995 with a 5.4L V8, not 5.7.

I drove an 80s 928 with the 4.7 or 5.0L V8. It was hard, noisy and gutless with a 3sp automatic. The Soarer is a nicer car than any model 928 and probably faster than all but the S4 and GTS models with circa 250kW. On the other hand, you could encourage me into a 911 or Cayman S (not a Cayenne) quite readily.

Actually, its the Volkswagen Type 1. Personally I call them the Hitler mobile.

I'm sure you are right about the engine in the 928, I was just going from my dodgy memory of my conversation with the owner. Which is as good as my spelling apparently.

I doubt my JZZ31 is faster than even an early model 928! But thats OK, I still wouldn't swap it (except to sell it and buy a better Soarer)

I'd think the JZZ31 would be as fast, if not faster than a 928........For as much as I'd love an S4, they're absolute rubbish

Did a bit of digging on the net.

The original 4.5 litre V8 produced 240 ps (german version of HP, very close in ratio) - around 20 hp more than the 2JZ-GE. The American market model was about 21 bhp down on this due to emissions control, so about the same the the 2JZ - of course I've no idea how this was measured.

By 1995 with the 5.4 litre it was up to 345 hp.

Torque also increased over the years ending up at a massive 365 ft-lbs so a lot more than the 2JZ's 284N-m. (something like 200 ft-lbs?)

Weight for all models seems to have been around 1500kg's, so pretty much the same as the JZZ31. Surprising as parked next to each other the Soarer seems a larger and more imposing car.

So I'm picking it would be a narrow win to the Porsche with the original 4.5 litre, and with each successive model the Porsche would leave me further and further behind.

I think you might be underplaying your car a little but this is speculation on my part where we can not compare them on a track.

The two areas where you will gain will be in the gearbox and in age. The Porsche's original 3sp auto was a horrible thing compared with the 4sp on the Soarer and the 928 loses quite a bit of its nominal urge right there. Also, the 165-180kW with which the original cars came would be a distant memory compared with your car's youthful ten years of age. The Porsche had a harder suspension setup but your car loses nothing in fundamental suspension design and in its brakes. Your car was designed fifteen years later and with the 928 as one of its inspirations. I think you could handle the 4.5L and 4.7L models easily enough although the later cars, with 5.0L, 200+kw and 4sp auto, would do you in.

That bit of speculation was fun

The early 928's had a rather annoying propensity of the lower ball joints collapsing at inconvenient moments, much to the owners disgust and embarrassment

My mate has his own workshop and we're about to do the lowering thing on my Soarer (have sent him all the info found here).

I have also been advised to get the alignment done AFTER the car is lowered so thats what I'll do.

I'll post pics and a report once this is completed, hopefully in the next week or two.

Wind down the rods and then reset the sensor arms Darryn. I've been advised not to get the after-market height controllers as they can do in the airbags apparently.

But the rod reset will do for now, thats what they're there for eh
