What type of LSD?? I'd suggest the manufacturer of the diff might be a place to start.

Gidday Dan. If the Factory LSD doesn't have spider gears, then why does the clunk happen on the left rear wheel? I have had it to my mechanic, who pulled out his manual on the diff, which showed a spider gearing between the 2 springs and the plates which make up the LSD. Do you know what it is then that needs replacing? He is happy to rebuild it if I can source the parts, which appear to be these bits, not the crown or pinion gears. Thanks

Factory LSD doesn't have springs and plates either.

Sounds like he's shown you a picture of a clutch type LSD, wheras the factory LSD's are a TORSEN type.

AFAIK Toyota is the only supplier of parts for these, and the diff centre is a non serviceable unit.

If there's a clunk I'd be more inclined to think a CV shaft, or a hub issue.

Thanks Dan. That sounds more like it as the clunk appears to come from that area, and I can feel a pulsing through the car when we had it up on the hoist and I had it in gear and the wheels spinning. I could actually feel a pulsing through the frame of the car. If you hear hooves, think horses, not zebras, which would be the motto here. He is an old bloke, with data to match. I think the diff he showed me was out of his Land cruiser, which would explain the issue. So what's the diagnostic for this? A hint would be great. Cheers.
