Hmm well, I was driving along in my neat 5 cylinder Honda (featuring a sporty BFI) through a set of working lights at around 8:25. At 8:27 or so the next set of lights I got to were out! I just thought it may have been a slight problem with that set but once I got to my destination I found out the entire story!

My house only got power back on at 7.02pm, No power for 10 1/2 hours! :-(

Talk about ridiculous. One main cable lost or something and this is what we get! :-(
Reminds me of 1998, the year Auckland suffered that major Power cut that ran for 5 weeks in the CBD due to 4 or 5 60 year old power cables in the ground failing!

Yeah, that was crazy........whole companies shifting out of the CBD to the burbs and industrial areas, just so they could continue operating...........totally nuts!!!!.

All we had in New Plymouth was MAJOR wind gusts, MAJOR rain, and the odd power flicker..........made for an entertaining drive to work...... but Soarer just sailed through it all, oblivious to stalled cars on the side of the road HeHe.

It's cool to drive a Soarer!!!!

Usually the surges involved with power lines coming down won't be stopped by domestic surge protectors. :-(

My work has a large generator, so we kept running unfortunately. Soarer drives fine - actually with its streamlining and weight, its the perfect car for high winds.

Next time you see a power pylon look at the very apex of those towers and you'll see a single cable stretched from one to another. Those are there to capture any lightning strikes. The same in switchyards above the bus. At the Otahuhu switchyard one of those snapped and with the high winds it flicked across the live phases taking out the breakers on earth protection.
As for the the fact most of Auckland is fed through the Otahuhu switchyard you only need look at the geography of Auckland to see there's not much room to put another one especially with those 'nimby's'. Also there's no generation now from north of Auckland to feed in from there.
Good old Greens eh, not that they're bothered about Auckland.

Talk to the people in the South Island who've been without power for a couple of days now and see if they give a rats arse about Auckland?
(oh that's right, you can't talk to them 'cause the power's out as well as cell phone towers!)Just wanted to speak out for those who can't after all the bleating about poor old Auckland out of power for five minutes

Hate to say it, but while its probably very inconvenient for Southlanders without power at the moment, not to mention very uncomfortable (and possibly dangerous for some) - its doesn't cost $100,000,000 per day, nor affect 700,000 or more people. Auckland without power is bad news for the whole country financially, and thats why its big news.

i was in at work by 7.30am and so our phones and network went out with the power, but the computers remained on thanks to the UPS. We eventually got the word to go home at 10.30am and i spent the rest of the day and tuesday in bed getting over a cold.

i remember 98 as well- i was just starting university in auckland so had to climb 10 flights of stairs each day to get to my room in the hall of residence. It's a pathetic and embarrassing situation, but I'd really like to know the root cause - is it because not enough money has been invested in the infrastructure or because there isn't the money there to invest. It would actually be a challenge to think of one type of infrastructure in Auckland that is up to scratch!
Road? Rail? Communications? Power? Public transport?

HA! what a joke.

I'm glad we moved to New Plymouth in 94.
I could see Auckland starting to go downhill with all the congestion and crap happening, like Bastion Point and other political bollocks, which we "Enjoy" to this day
Sadly it's not the Auckland that I was born and raised in any more

It's due to years of ineptness by local bodies and governments alike.

I still love West Auckland and always will. As I work in Onehunga and live in Titirangi I don't usually have to deal with the traffic - but when I do, it does drive me nuts.

I've been told that it was lightning that struck that earth cable. This brings up another problem which is, those cables are designed to take care of lightning strikes so why did it break and ipso facto are all other earth cables vulnerable?
