Amsoil claim that their ATF meets Toyota Type T and T-IV specs.

You can use the amsoil one that Gareth posted or the Super Shift Racing Transmission Fluid. The Super Shift Racing Transmission Fluid seems a bit overkill, but get what you use your car for. Since Mike is doing the flush, lets hope he chimes in on how much you need. There's a thread on flushing the transmission that you should check out if you haven't already.

For the diff, I'm going to say 2 litre should do the trick. I don't know which type to use, have to get back to you on that. I'll be doing the diff oil change too, but I won't be using amsoil :p

I bought 1.89 litres of diff oil still had some left over. Not only did I use to fill up the diff, but I also used some of it to flush out the remaining old diff oil, got some on the floor and some on me because I just love the smell of diff oil. So you'll be fine with buying two bottles. If you do want to know the exact amount to use, I'll say it's about 1.3 or 1.4 litres. Also if you need a hand let me know.

How much ATF is needed just to replace?

No such thing really. A lot of ATF is trapped in the torque converter, so the only way to replace that would be to cut it open (not very practical), or do a power flush.

You can drain the gearbox, but you only get a couple of litres out, so by topping it up you are really only diluting the old ATF with new stuff.

It's not like the engine sump that can drain pretty much all oil in the engine.

so no drain on the torque converter. So pretty much limited to doing a flush.

I heard that power flush of ATF is not recommended in such old cars as ours are, because you can destroy some parts inside of auto transmission box...

good luck

a Toyota/Lexus specialist put AMSOIL 5W-30 Synthetic in my V8 for the fall/spring months. Lasts up to 25 000 miles apparently, mechanic recommends changing at 20 000km. Also, AMSOIL synthetic fluid is currently in my diff. For transmission fluid, I've strictly kept to T-IV Toyota Fluid with great results.
