Would there be much interest for alarm and/or immobiliser systems if I can organise a deal for SC members? I realise most of you probably already have them, but thought I would ask anyway.

I'd be VERY interested. Only problem would be getting someone to install it. Most places that do installs prefer you to buy their alarms. But yeh, i'm currently in the market for an alarm. Hook us up

I'm hoping that Peter will be hooking us up with a better quality alarm than the ebay cheapo's. The ebay ones look great....and sooo cheap....but you get so many issues with the cheap alarms.... I'm not looking to spend a fortune, only prob 200-300 bucks. But i'm hoping I dont have to get an ebay cheapy. I'd rather a good quality alarm with less features than an alarm with more features than a space shuttle that doesnt work.

Genuine question. I had a talk to Brant, but they only want to sell the more expensive stuff and do the install through their dealers. When I asked about just immobilisers, I got nowhere, the guy just kept pushing the expensive alarm systems.

Thats what I thought....Alarm places always want to install their own systems. I might just buy one and have a go at installing it myself. I'm a pro at dodgy wiring. lol Well, let us know if you have any luck.

A mate of mine bought a viper 1002 from Autobarn few weeks back and we installed it. Just need to find wiring diagrams and tap into the correct wires. But we didn't have time to get the immobiliser in.. but it is only two wires anyway. It came with full instruction on what each wire does and where it goes, and there are heaps of wires you don't need. We didn't use any of the aux in/out so that was one less loom. Next time i pass Autobarn i will ask them and see what they say.

so they would rather sell us nothing, unless its the most expensive stuff? they want to miss out on a potentially large group buy? what kind of company is this? |

Well i went down to Autobarn and spoke to the manager Trent this morning and got some prices for the alarm. These are the prices you would pay if you are installing yourself. Level 1 Car linea - immobiliser - $91 Hornet - alarm/immobiliser - $111 Level 2 Cyclops - alarm/immobiliser - $184 Hornet - upgrade alarm - $184 not sure if this is full unit or just upgrade Level 4 and up Viper 1000 - alarm/immobiliser - $229 Viper 1002 - alarm/immobiliser - $279 Viper 3000 - alarm/immobiliser - $429 Viper 791XV - paging alarm/immobiliser - $679 Basically they said all they could do was take off the install price of these as that is where they make there money on the products and the margin on the alarms themselves isn't much. Maybe if there was enough interest a bit more could be taken off. But sometimes Autobarn has 20% off store wide. Level 1 install was $88 Level 2 install was $165 Level 4 and up install was $220

I know there is also a Viper 571xv but don't think autobarn sell them. They also have remote start. But then again i have the 791xv in my car as it doubles as a turbo timer. heheheh If you get them to install it for you, remote start will cost a little extra i think.

Yeah i put in remote start and i never use it, but would be good if we lived in cold places for warming the car up in the morning. But while its hovering around 40 degrees its just a waste of time and petrol. I only got that alarm because of the turbo timer function, and it works great.

Ebay have some more of them if you search, it would always be cheaper from ebay. But then again its ebay. lol I installed mine myself with a bit of help. I had no problems finding the wiring. Also installed a viper 1002 the other week, and it came with all instruction on the wires, so if you have some knowledge on crimping cables and testing then it shouldn't be to hard.

The only problem with autobarn/mainstream immobilizers..is that car thieves know exactly how to get rid of them, and quickly. I would opt for something not so common, and go for at least a three point with all black wiring, and have your installer heatshrink everything. If someone is gonna try and break into your car, chances are they will succeed. but you may as well make it such a pain in the arse that they give up and bail

Use a microwave motion sensor, it detects movement. You can adjust how sensitive it is so it can sense inside the car or even create a 'wall' around your car. And it will give out warning tones.

Its probably a job for those guys at autospeed.com, but a module like the S class mercedes ould be great: A tranmitter (Perhaps an RFID Chip) built into a card that you keep in your pocket. hen you are within range the car unlocks and when you leave it locks. The engine is started by a push button somewhere (Not that we have to have one, could just have proximity unlock only) and use the key to start the engine on its own.
