Thanks guys. I'm hoping to win something Gary...

Got more of the wiring sorted out yesterday. Still a fair bit to do, but it is progressing. After turning the garage upside down twice, I finally found that igniter too. Should be able to wire that in next week. I also need to pick up an air temperature sensor, as the box of stuff I got with the Motec didn't include one.

I'll post up a few photos of the wiring once it is done.

Cheers,

Andrew

I've seen Andrew's newest 'mod' and it is impressive. I came in here expecting to see more of it. I guess he is still chasing that grid girl around...

OK, OK. I should've put something up by now. Been really tied up with work and other adventures, sorry. So here's the latest:

I'm currently averaging about half a day per week working on the car, but with the car currently being out of my possession, that's not too bad.

I’ve spent a fair amount of time sorting the wiring out. Not only was the car wiring redone in its entirety (the original wiring looms when removed from the car totalled over 25kg), but I also mated the engine loom with the Motec loom.

A couple of little hurdles along the way, not the least of which was the Toyota and Motec wiring diagrams conflicting in relation to how the ignition coils were set up. I decided in the end to go with the Motec version of events, but that meant retracing wires that had already been loomed up (what is it that makes me tidy everything up, put plastic tubing and loom tape everywhere, and then check to make sure nothing is missing?), and then cutting and splicing new cabling throughout the length of the main loom.

The wiring is nearly done, so when it is I'll put some photos up.

The mounting of the front bumper assembly has been planned, looked at, re-planned and re-examined. So now we vaguely know what we’re doing with it. Just waiting on a bit of fiberglass work and it should be ready to put on the car properly. Then it’s just a matter of taking a mold of it to reproduce new parts. And of course I'll put some pics up of that too.

The photos below are for the oil/power steering cooler I got custom made. It has been designed for much better cooling efficiency than normal coolers. The piping is a large diameter so the surface area that the fluid is in contact with is greater, allowing more heat exchange.

It is the same size as the radiator opening on the Soarer, so it will sit in front of the radiator. The gaps between the fins will allow plenty of air to flow through to the radiator. It also is designed to cool both the engine oil and the power steering fluid. The fittings are standard motor sport/aircraft fittings (from Speedflow).

I got it through a sponsor deal, so it cost me nothing. But it is extremely cheap. Much cheaper than anything on the market that I can find.

And yes, the model number has been designated as SC400 as written on the label. That should tell you that anyone who wants one can buy it - just contact me.

Ben, I replied to your email.

Matt S., sorry it took so long. I'll try better!

Oh, and I don't need to chase that grid girl around lads. She's here all the time

ahh pretty cool looking setup with the oil cooler. are you going to make alot of ducting between that and the radiator on the sides? as you have the front diffuser to keep it from escaping underneath.

good to see an update too :-)

She said you'll have to wait until Summer, when the tan is back Peter.

Aaron Casey wrote on Thursday, August 05, 2010 - 05:56 pm:

The two will be mounted fairly close together, but yes I'll probably run some ducting around the edges to keep the airflow going straight. The oil cooler won't interrupt the airflow to the radiator much, but I still want to get as much across the radiator as possible. Hope you will be at Wakefield Park to see Round 4 in a couple of weeks too Aaron.

I know I said I'd wait until the end, but its been so long since I posted an update that I'm going to give a progress report on the wiring now. I already mentioned the wiring diagram conflicts, so I'll leave the rest of the story to the photos. Here is the engine bay with the Motec loom and engine loom prior to any work being done. This is how it was when on display at Eastern Creek a couple of months ago:

And this is how it is looking now in the engine bay. Just a couple of little things to tidy up, and then it'll be ready for loom tape and plastic tubing (which I won't do until the engine is running in case there is an issue that needs tracing):

And here is how it is going in the interior. The dash loom is done, and I've mapped out where everything else is going. The relay/fuse panel is set up, but still needs painting and a couple more wires added. The switch panel is not done yet, but all the switches and lights for it are wired:

The other thing that is happening right now is getting the gearbox cross-member sorted. This photo shows what was done just to get the car on display, but as you can see the height was wrong and we're in the process of modifying it so that the exhaust is not obstructed and the engine/gearbox sits at the right angle:

So that's about all I have to update on for now.

On a slightly different subject, although exactly the same really...

Those who have followed this thread from the beginning will probably have worked out the difference now between a floor pan Sports Sedan and a spaceframe Sports Sedan. The Soarer in this thread is a floor pan car.

So what would a Soarer look like if you were to build it in spaceframe configuration? I can't tell you who owns it, or where it is currently, but check out this little baby:

This Soarer is being built to have a centre-mounted, 6-litre Chev engine. Construction of the car was started about the same time as the Toymax car, but it is now on the back burner as the owner is concentrating on his other race car. Nice, eh?

Cool. Is there any chance of him using fibreglass doors that will fit your car (and mine)to save you from developing them from scratch? I assume the entire front is a 'clip'.

I reckon once there is a couple Soarers on the track they might take off, especially if you can buy parts off the shelf (like your fibreglass bits). The body is pretty good aero wise, and the bay is big enough to put a variety of motors in.

Not much chance with the doors Ben. His car will be made up of very few parts (or clips). Front end (guards and bonnet), separate front spoiler assembly (because he breaks them frequently), rear end one piece, and roof/mid section one piece. Doors are likely to be removable panels rather than hinged items.
