Back from EXE Winton track day, and with a new PB ... 1.43.82! (around 2 seconds off last time) with Jason in the car. It's time like this that makes it all worth it .. like when you hit yourself in the head while working under the car !

Having said that, It was unexpected, due to the damp conditions and the only real change being the auto=>manual conversion, but all the same, very thrilled at the result, and at how smoothly the car is running. Brakes held up OK, and the car didn't chew up any oil or coolant, which is a relief. Some great fun in the wet, and I'm sure it would have been pretty funny to watch too, no doubt! 3rd gear most of the way around the track, and 4th for the straights, but it maxes out 4th on the long straight so I tried either leaving it in 4th and coasting, or shifting to 5th quickly then back to 3rd for the S. Second method is a bit quicker, but I get confused with all the shifting :-)

Results/laptimes:
http://www.natsoft.com.au/cgi-bin/results.cgi?09/06/2008.WIN.P5.Y

Next time ... the Snorer will be back and better!

Main priority next: LSD to get the power down, and some power mods, to stop those fancypants Neesans pulling away on the straights (yes, that's those 350Zs) :-)

Highlight of the day: Having removed the overhead grab handles, passengers had nowhere to hold onto during the corners hehe

Thanks to Winton (eck0) for pic:

Also, must bring ear plugs next time, the noise in the car on the highway is DEAFENING ! You would have to yell to the person in the passenger seat to carry a conversation haha

A clip from my car, first session out and just having a feel ... Sorry about the camera view, was too busy worrying about the car :-( Will fix next time ..! You can 'just' see over the dash haha

Thanks all for the comments, all suggestions welcomed!

Since graphs are the order of the day, here is a graph of laps vs laptime (total of 73 laps) .. Each track day (3 in total) is shaded a different colour, blue line is raw laptime, and red line is averaged laptime (minus warmup/cooldown laps). Rain icon = self explanatory, and gear icon is gearbox issues.

Trackday 1 - Stock
Trackday 2 - Semis/suspension/weight reduce
Trackday 3 - Manual conversion

From this, we learn not only that I'm a very erratic and inconsistent driver, but there is also an inexplicable rise in laptime towards the end of the first track day. Hurrah!
In addition, during the last two trackdays, PB was achieved about 2/3 throughout the day.

Hi Joshua - my friend bought it from Yahoo auctions in Japan, unfrotunately not sure which online store! Very rare, I haven't seen any others around ... Here is another pic:

Thanks James :-) I'd love to see more Soarers at the track!

Quick update: Good news, finally picked up the factory torsen diff, what a beautiful beast. After draining the oil out, we cracked open the rear case to check the condition. Internals looked good, so re-sealed it and filled up with some new oil. In the meantime, spare 1J had turbos removed for sale. Picture listed below is stock twins + dump (CT12A) next to Starlet GT turbo (CT9), note the restrictive dump pipe design.

Bad news, Alan from Promax noticed one of the engine mounts was in bad shape when they were doing the gearbox installation before last track day. Hopefully this won't give way before I get a chance to source a replacement.

Also, cut out a section of the front bumper for no apparent reason, as you do. Getting ready to re-route PS to AT cooler, and install oil cooler. To remove the diff: 3 driveshaft bolts, 2 front bolts, 6 sideshaft bolts each side, and 3 rear mount bolts. Old diff sump plug dirty and clean pictured below. Also see side by side comparison of open and torsen factory diffs. Identical! No markings of any kind .. Some cruel joke I'm sure.

Didn't get a chance to test drive the car yet unfortunately, due to time constraints. Also got started on installing the AFC and other gauges, but incomplete at this stage. Also PS and oil coolers still to go. Phew, going to be busy couple of weeks! Visit to Wakefield park coming up in a couple of weeks.

Mega thanks to Dan and Kenny for the help :-)

Updates:
* Sprayed rest of car interior in Bunnings deluxe flat black, but ran out halfway so used gloss black, so now it's partly shiny
* Used leftover boot trim from IS200 to fashion makeshift parcel shelf, held down by cleverly placed bolts, in order to cover speaker holes
* Tidied up a bit of wiring, and then proceeded to put off SAFC wiring until next week .. I hate doing wiring so I keep putting it off
* Chucked in a cream color floor mat I found somewhere, I think it's from a BMW
* Took the car out for a drive, it's a blast, better than I could have imagined .. Great fun all round, I can't wait to get more seat time
* Experiencing fuel surge issues
* Chucked on some new boots (Koyo Driftek 17") ... Also R32 GTs-T rims on the Cressy, which will be towing sailplane to Wakefield in a few weeks

To go:
* Minor stuff till Wakefield, mainly clean up and wirings ... I don't think I need more power, I just have to get more driving time first, so exhaust and tune can wait

No real last minute preparations, apart from a water temp gauge. I wanted to try out the new diff before doing anything else. Also, the yellowed right headlight was really bugging me, and fortunately there was a 2nd handie available. A quick cut and polish and it makes a world of difference! Pics below show boost / RSM / water temp gauge. The interior and doors were also treated to the best of Bunnings, with a few coats of matt. Also, the Soarer launched off a dead wallaby (and it's now dead kid) at Black Spur, resulting in much squishyness. No apparent damage.

The car was loaded onto a trailer for the long trip to Wakefield Park in NSW, the front bar was removed to load it onto the ramps, but in the future I will remove the front lip so it will drive straight on. On to Wakefield, and started off the day with a 1:15, and that dropped to a 1:14 next session after I started to get the hang of things, towards the end of the day, I was staying to the outside of the kink and taking the first corner wider, and pushing harder through the other corners, dropped the PB for the end of the day to 1:12.45, quite satisfied for no power or brake mods. I dropped the tyre pressures towards the end of the day, and took some tips on driving lines. Wakefield I find has more tricky corners than Winton, even though it's a shorter track.

Highlights:

* Heaps of fun driving with the other EXE crew, and also some of the NSW drivers, including the white Golf and yellow Integra
* Fending off a yellow DC2 Type-R (who did a 1:12 at one stage) around the dog leg, then overtaking a particularly unpredictable Mini Cooper. Just as I was turning through the hairpin, the Integra pulled a super extra late braking maneuver, dived on the inside of the cooper, and I ran wide to give him some room. We both lined up on the straight neck to neck, and pulled dead even till the kink, with both of us just WILLING for that extra little bit of power. At that point, I wished I had not been so lazy to install a bleed valve.

Lowlights:

* Unnecessary long bolt from bottom of PS pump shaking loose (I neglected to remove it when removing the AC compressor, as they join together), and catching in the PS pulley, resulting in a bent bolt. It manifested itself in a clinking noise as the bolt was shuddering off PS pulley. I triple checked all the pulleys after it was removed, and re-tightened the PS pulley just to be sure.
* Chasing Evo, DC2-R, Lotus Elise and Kenny (in that order) and relying on the brakes to pull me up. After the pedal sank 3/4 to the floor and the car began to lazily haul up, I then remembered how much better a Z or Elise would brake, at the same time getting ready to veer off into the dirt in case I nicked the back of Kenny's car as it loomed rapidly closer (which would result in certain death, not from the crash but from Kenny attacking me with a spanner). But luckily this was never required, and we all lived happily ever after.
* Clumsy driving resulted in downshifting too early, and causing the engine to rev to 8054rpm. Luckily nothing flew out the top of the bonnet!

The Soarer is driving great, the balance of the car is quite good, a hint of understeer on corner entry, and now with the ability to use the throttle to balance the back end on the way out. The amount of traction available now with the LSD is vastly improved: Instead of picking up the inside at the slightly provocation and creating a plume of smoke, the rear grips and keeps on gripping, only letting go progressively if you push a bit too hard. I still have alot of work to do on my driving technique, but so far it's a blast! The brakes definitely need a bit of work, as does the fuel surge issues around left handers, it seems to happen very consistently.

Very much looking forward to Winton this weekend! Hoping to cut off a half-second from LSD vs non-LSD. Everything else is the same since last time.

Will have some videos up tomorrow.

New vs old, squeaky clean!

July 08 - Classic Skylines Australia Track Day

No changes from last Winton track day, except for a factory torsen diff (which I was hoping would allow the car to get the power down quicker).

Some good sessions in the afternoon, and I managed to get in 22 laps for the whole day (85 litres of petrol including driving there and back). The car feels fantastic to drive with the diff, very progressive and the car tells you exactly what is going to happen next. I had confidence in pushing the car harder than the previous Winton visit and accelerating earlier out of the corners than before, as the traction was improved. The net result was a PB of 1.42.66, which is 1.2 seconds better than the previous visit. But after watching some of the other in-car vids, and seeing how much more to the limit others drive the car, I think I still have a long way to go. Especially around the sweeper (admittedly I don't know quite which is the best line to take still), the S-bend and I'm sure a couple of the other corners. Practice will make perfect! I kept on driving in the afternoon sessions because there was no traffic until I ran out of petrol. The tail end also gets a bit light on braking, especially for the first hairpin and the S-bend.

Lots of fun on the day, including:

* Duel with Vu in the S15 (but actually, I was driving for as quick a laptime as I could but I don't think Vu even raised a sweat haha)
* Seeing Pat spin off right in front of Ying, who stopped, and Jally sneaking around the outside
* Accidentally getting sideways around the first hairpin and seeing Silas coming at me from the driver's window ... Cue slow-motion terror cam!
* 'Attempting' to catch up to Jally on street tyres (but failing miserably to do so)
* Adrian (ES)'s first words I heard after he blew up his engine .. 'Stroker kit'!
* Following the millenium jade R32 GTR in the early sessions, he wins on the straights
* Chasing down Brent in the blue F6 Typhoon, he wins on the straights too

I decided to change from semi-slicks (Bridgestone RE55SR2) to street tyres (Nankang ultra Sport NS2) towards the end of the day in preparation for the wet weather. This also allowed me to try for a PB in street tyre trim. The Nankangs are fairly progressive and surprisingly grippy, but after one or two laps, they overheat and the grip drops off dramatically (as with most street tyres). I was suitably impressed, and set a street tyre PB of 1.47.21.

Results here:
http://www.natsoft.com.au/cgi-bin/results.cgi?26/07/2008.WIN.R1

First video is here, from around middle of day.
* Around 1:20 - Silas (Flameboy) overtaking me :-(
* Around 1:50 - Chaser's Evo overtaking me :-(
* Around 3:20 - Adrian (ES) overtaking me :-(
* Around 7:20 - Black turbo Zed going off the track

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aD-IQFdTkTw

Second video is here ... This was taken late in the day when there was nobody on the track .. except Vu (evilsub) with a menacing silhoutte in the rear view, and so I was trying as hard as I could to get away! (didn't work of course, he overtakes around the 3:50 mark)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSbhynNiCvo

Third video ... Chasing down Brent in the F6 Typhoon, he pulls nicely on the straights, and his line is pretty good, plus he has grippy tyres (RE001s), but I think the weight of the car works against it .. Also overtaking black Zed here, and Alan from Promax (180sx) overtaking us all in dramatic fashion. Alan left a telltale sign of smoke on each corner from locking up!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9l9ESPAxIAM

And final video here ... First practice session in the morning, random cars in group resulting in some unfortunate traffic jams. Drew is sitting shotgun, and the camera is dreadfully overexposed (as I had left it on automatic). The GTR I end up chasing had plenty of pull on the straights (I'd estimate at least 250kw).

Hey Shaun, What car clubs do you join for the Winton Track Days??

I don't own a Soarer, but we live only an hour away and get down to Winton as often as possible to watch. We went to the last public track day with a car club from Melbourne and there was only 1 Soarer out on the Track, not sure who he was though.

Thanks for the kind words James :-)

Nichola: Usually EXE, who run open practice days at Winton, but occasionally will join with other groups such as OTR motorsports ... Also thinking about joining the BP sprints but that would be later on.

Do you remember any details about that Soarer on the track? On a related note, I remember a gentleman who lived next to Winton and he was telling me about his DIY Jaguar race car with a 1J/R154 transplant, medium single and running in the high 30s!

I have more pics hosted here from this and previous track days :

Hey Shaun. Can't remember too many details about the Soarer, will have to have a look back through photos from the day.Didnt actually speak to the guy. He was also at the last open day at Winton in December last year. White colour is all I remember, ha ha.

My hubby is an official at Winton, so hopefully he'll be able to get more involved down there. I love that place!!

Project of the weekend - fit front brake setup snatched from Supra TT. Fitting was a direct bolt on, using stock rotors and pads. The standard dust guard needed to be cut off in order to fit the slightly larger rotors. The calipers are noticeably larger, and a pair of TRD braided lines was also fitted on at the same time. Have not yet driven extensively yet, but will post thoughts later on. Total time taken - approximately 4 hours (probably half that if I had to do it again).

Old 296mm (left) and new 324mm (right):

Old 2-pot calipers (left) and new 4-pot (right):

RB74 pads for 2-pot (left) and stock Toyota 4-pot pads (right):

Dust cover needed removal, this can be done with metal snips or dremel. No dust cover, no worries!

Braided lines installed:

Stock rubber line vs braided line, there is a groove for another C-clip on the stock line which is not present on the braided line. There is also an extra protrusion on the banjo end on the rubber lines for alignment, so care must be exercised when tightening the braided line.

Stock setup vs new setup:

Initial flushing of the calipers = frothy milkshake!

Finished, plenty of clearance:
