How much and where from the wheel centres?

If you're referring to those BBS ones Dave, then Paul hit the nail on the head. E-bay it was, and I know this will probably put tears in Paul's eyes, but the complete set was well under $400 delivered from Qld to my door.

Well, I'm doing it mate! Or do you mean who will drill and assemble them for me? I guess there are various wheel guys around, but I'm using one who is local to me (or nearly local) at St Marys, NSW.

Gavin, I was going to come up with a really fancy explanation for those vents that would have included all sorts of stuff about pressure waves and cooling and traction and everything. But it looks like the engineer jumped in and actually told the truth. He sucks like that...

And thanks for dobbing on me too Michael! Can't a bloke slightly bend a few rules in the name of freedom of expression????

Oh well then Dave, that changes everything. I've upset Paul for no reason. You're a bad man Cazes, and don't you forget it.

As for the new outers, I got them custom made from Whitehorse Industries in Melbourne (well, actually a fair drive out of Melbourne). You can check them out here:

http://www.metalspinnersaust.com.au/

They were very helpful, and compared to getting the correct size wheels made up by someone like ROH or Simmons (who no longer exist), they were heaps cheaper. My rims were expensive compared to most of what they do, because I had to pay for the tooling. But in future when I get more made up from them, it won't be as expensive as they'll already have that tooling.

That also works out well for you, if you happen to want the same sized rims as I got made. And mine (when they are assembled) will be 17 x 9.5 fronts, and 17 x 11 rears, with just the right offset for the Soarer.

And when I say it was more expensive because I had to pay for the tooling, it was still heaps cheaper than getting them made through one of the wheel companies. The four rims cost me $900, including polishing.

Does that answer your question mate?

So yesterday the car was released from the evil clutches of Bruce The Pedantic, and conveyed to a new, secret location in the Blue Mountains, where it will stay for a while so I can tinker with it a bit more. Getting it into the shed was a bit of a challenge, on account of the shed being at the bottom of a rather steep incline, and the diff being welded and preventing sharp turns. Here is the shed, showing the hill in front:

And here's a better view of the hill, from the bottom and the top:

Yeah, it is a bit like Skyline at Bathurst... Anyway, the car is now safe and well in its new home.

One thing we took care of when the car was in the workshop was setting up to mount the boot lid. I cut up an old, donated boot seal, and then attached the portions in strategic places:

Upload

Upload

Doing it that way allows the boot lid to sit in its original position (because it has the inner skeleton), but doesn't include the weight of an entire boot seal. And the boot doesn't need to be sealed. So here's how the boot sits:

Sorry, it was nearly dark when I took those photos. But you get the idea. All that's left for the boot lid is to install the pins and fasteners that will hold it in place against the rubber seal.

Cheers,

Andrew

With all the fibreglass panels at the rear what's your plan to mount the wing? Will it be supported at the end plates like the Ford V8 Supercars or will you have mounts running through the bootlid?

Hi Damien. It will be centre mounted, and will be tied into the chassis rails via an added cross-member in the boot, behind the fuel cell. That will mean two slots through the fibreglass, but the plan is to leave the boot lid intact if possible, as it will be a quickly removable panel. Because the rules allow the wing to be mounted rearward of the boot, it should end up looking similar (well, sort of) to this mount:

So we'll keep the vents in the guards then. Hopefully they'll catch on as a must-have aero device, and they'll write them into the rules? And because the guards came like that from the factory, it should be a breeze!

Photos of the wheels as promised. These are only mock ups at this stage, the rims are still to be drilled and the whole lot assembled. But I think you get the idea. I've only got three here, as one of them has already moved house. These are two rears and one front:

And just as a means of comparison, here is one of the new rear ones next to what was an original rear wheel. You can see a fair increase in wheel width has been achieved:

Thanks Antonio, we do like to keep the fans entertained. The last couple of weeks has seen a grand total of NO work done on the car. I am just in the process of moving house (again), so it is impossible to do anything with the car at the moment.

There are two bright sides. One is the air jacks arrived last week, and they look good. They were chucked straight into a moving box last week and are now somewhere deep inside the same shed the car is in, so I haven't taken any photos yet, sorry. I ended up going with two smaller ones for the front, and one larger duty one for the rear, which I think will end up attached to the rear diff. subframe somehow.

And the second bright side is I've managed to find a rental place that may very well suit my needs, the approval of which I will find out about on Monday. As it happens to have a 6 CAR GARAGE, at least I should be able to tinker on the old girl again, even if I can't afford to buy any new bits for a while...

Quick update. I have moved house now, but I haven't fitted the garage out properly yet, so the Soarer, all its parts and most of my tools are still away on holidays. I'm hoping to get things moving next week to arrange getting everything to my place, although if this rain keeps up there's not much chance of getting the car out of the shed anyway, as we won't be able to get it up the hill.

Once the Soarer and my tools are all under the one roof (at my place), I'll actually be able to start tinkering again. Woohoo!

Oran Park, Sydney's oldest and most iconic racing circuit, is due to close in January, 2010 to make way for a housing development.

This weekend the 31st October/1st November will see the last ever State Championships round to be held at the circuit, and will be a must-see for anyone even remotely interested in cars, car racing or grid girls.

The program is full of categories, all with over-subscribed grids, including Sports Sedans, Improved Production, Combined Touring Cars, Formula Vee, Formula Ford, Sports & Racing Cars, HQ Holdens and Production Sports Cars.

There is qualifying and one race for each category on Saturday, and two races for each category on Sunday, including a 1-hour endurance race for Production Sports Cars that includes a compulsory pit stop.

I urge all Soarer Central members in Sydney and surrounds to head to Oran Park this weekend for an unforgettable event. Come and have a chat to me too - I'll be hanging around the Sports Sedans marquee and helping out with a video production of the category. Unfortunately my car won't be ready in time for it, but I'll be there all weekend anyway.

Hope to see a whole bunch of Soarers at the track!

Cheers,

Andrew

It would be good to watch but don't think I will get the chance.

I only just last week did my first track day at Oran Park and it was a lot more challenging then Eastern Creek.
It will be a shame to loose such a fun track.
I think there is a ban on Fun in Western Sydney.
First Cables Ski Park
Then Australia Wonderland
Now Oran Park
plus a bunch of others
But they did build around 25square K's of lakes that you can use for rowing, cycling and Walking (not swimming, fishing, boating or anything else that may be considered fun)

I agree with all your sentiments Rob.

I ended up spending Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Oran park, fiddling with some on-board video cameras. I'll throw some of the footage up at some stage. The whole weekend was full of fantastic, and I have to say there is nothing, absolutely nothing, to compare with a full field of 32 Sports Sedans thundering past you. It was simply awesome.

And it got me all motivated again. With some help from one of the other Sports Sedan guys (thanks Jeff) I finally got the Soarer out of the shed and back into my safe custody. I haven't quite got the garage fully set up yet, but now the car is here I can start doing stuff with it.

One of the first tasks will be installing the air jacks, and then I'll be moving onto the engine/gearbox installation and a few other bits and pieces.

Bruce the Pedantic is off the track with a medical issue, so I'll concentrate on getting all this other stuff done until we can recommence work on the fibreglassing.

Stand by for more updates and photos, coming soon to a thread near you.

Cheers,

Andrew

Just a quick one. The car is now settled in its new home, and is up on the stands ready to be worked on. By the end of this week I'll have the garage set up with the shelving and bench space I need, and then I'll be able to concentrate on working on the car in a decent workshop environment.

I have already started a bit of work on positioning the air jacks, and have taken the measurements to make up the bracket that will mount the rear jack to the subframe. The front ones will be mounted at the base of the roll cage in the front of the foot well, and will require holes cut in the floor for them to operate. More detail on this in another post.

Meanwhile, here is the car resting in its new home:

Great to see things tracking along with the car and house mate, looks brilliant.
I'm hoping to find somewhere to do my wheels, they're the same as your's and I'd like a slightly different offset.
Any updates on the moulds for the guards?

You will in Darwin mate! And I did say you could park your Soarer next to mine on the weekend if you wanted.

Hi Joe. Bruce is still on the road to recovery after illness, so at this stage all fibreglassing work had to be postponed. I'm sure Bruce will jump back online and update progress when he's able.

In the meantime of got plenty of other things to tinker with, like plumbing and cables for the fire bomb, fitting the air jacks, installing the new seat, doing all the windows, properly mounting the bonnet and boot lid, putting the engine and gearbox back in to do the wiring harness, gearbox cross member and remote gear shift, and laying a few square metres of aluminium sheeting (did you get that Ben?) around the interior to cover up any gaps like the rear parcel shelf.

That should keep me going for a little while...

Mmmmmmm aluminium. I like aluminium. I might make my next bed out of aluminium.

I finally got the garage sorted to the point of being able to work on the car, and today I finally actually did a bit on the car. First though, I don't think I ever put up photos of the brakes when they were finished, so here they are:

This morning I did a bit more work on the air jacks. I don't think I put any photos up of them either. Here's one of the front ones:

The rear one looks similar but is a bit bigger and heavier duty as it will be working on its own whereas the fronts will be in a pair.

The front jacks will be mounted to the base of the roll cage in the driver's and passenger's foot wells. I therefore had to cut holes in the floor to allow the jacks to pass through. The passenger side was straight forward, however because of the pedal box the driver's side couldn't be mounted in the same position, and therefore I had to use two different sized hole saws to cut through the two layers of sheet metal on that side:

The jacks will actually be mounted via clamps and plates, which will in turn be mounted to the box sections at the base of the roll cage. Here's what they look like in position, but without the plates yet:

Here's how they protrude underneath the car. They will sit just above the height of the side skirts when they are in place:

And when you apply air...

That's about all I've done today, except for measuring up for the plates to mount the jacks. More as it happens...
