Had a unusual problem with my built 2J in the Soarer, as you can see the new (10 meetings) oil pump exploded, have never seen it happen before in any engine. The pump was a brand new unit that was modified by a mob in the US and are in discussions with them now.Luckily it was shut down fairly quickly and didn't damage the head or crank, just a lot cleaning with some new piston ect.ect.

Damn.

I know the standard relief valve can't flow enough for extended high RPM use, and that causes problems, but I'm guessing that is what was modded in the pump you had.

Sucks to see this, though.

If it's not relieving quickly enough it will keep building pressure until it lets go.

holy crap never seen that on a jz motor. how did they modify it? i know alot of people drill the return port and weaken the spring to have less oil pressure at high rpm?

Yeah Aaron they open out the return and alter the oil pressure, Putting in a new stock oil pump, new pistons, bearings and head gasket have been ordered. Have to fix it anyway, will be a bonus if they come to the party, just not holding my breath. But you never know.

Normally not a problem with toyota engines, with nissan's you need a dry sump set up.

Hate to rekindle an old thread but I'm interested to know what did about that oil pump. Did you just use a factory one or another modded one?

I'm in the process of building an engine and supporting high rpm is fairly high on my list of priorities..

Went with a stock genuine pump, the only reason they mod them is to stop the front seal blowing out but I never had that problem.

They drill out the return passage and either cut spring slightly or install a slightly lower pressure one as the oil pump generates alot of pressure at high rpm. Which can pop seals.
