Well. After alot of stuffing around and getting alot of things to try turn my nice car into a trackworthy car i have decided to get another car to flog at the track instead for a few reasons. I have put too much time and effort into the blue one to damage it, the front bar on the blue one is worth more than this whole car!, have some cheapish fun, improve my driving skills and hopefully make myself a more confident driver, and to be out on the track instead of always watching every second weekend or helping random people at the track out that break down haha

Ok basically started with a message to Daniel Savage from Southside Jap to keep an eye out for any cheap imports inc. skylines, soarers, 180sx, silvia etc. eventually let me know of this uzz31 he had for a great price with panel damage at front, i was hoping for a manual of some sort but down the track i can try convert. Just have some fun for now haha.

So loaded up my mates ute this morning to head up to pick it up. 1st casualty was the xr8 bonnet scoop incase it blew off on the highway haha

Sorry for multiple posts but much easier on phone as my house router just died :-(

Trip went fine, stayed at around 90km/hr on highway and took it easy. Only hard part was a couple of steep hill starts in sydney traffic the old vp v6 clutch didnt really cope with haha but was fine as soon as we got to highway which was good as i was in a mates car a few weeks before that almost jack-knifed on the highway from the death wobbles with his car on the back!
First thing was to find my old spares and get my bonnet/guards off a mate (case of beer). Noticed key doesnt lock doors so have also acquired a lock set from another uzz30 my brother and i stripped a few bits off.
So today have new:
Headlights
High beams
Reo
Headlight support bar
Front bumper
Bonnet
Guards
Lock-set
Jzz30 springs (will be giving back to daniel for sale as in good condition)

So stripping began to assess damage. Found had obvious bar/light/bonnet damage, radiator support/bonnet lock copped a beating (second time! As bit of bog in the rad support! :-( ), found a the section where the drivers headlight bolts on at the rear has squished up a bit so i cant get nuts off.

So after some glass cuts and scratches and some blood lost, got the 3 million bolts and screws for the front off.
So dont hate me for this and if i get it right i will reweld the split part of support but i sat the reo back on and used some ratchet straps to bend the support back in the right direction which was diagonally downwards and forwards a few inches.

Now sits like this:

So getting that in almost correct position fitted guards and bonnet, guards fitted ok, found the bonnet just doesnt sit right i think the lh hinge may be bent or moved back as in furthest forward position still hits door/guard near window. So i will elongate the holes tomorrow for a temporary fix to get everything lined up.
Sat the front on with no headlight surround as was getting dark and my floodlight bulbs are blown haha.
And for fun of it sat my genuine vertex guard on and dam it fitted perfect. Glad with that purchase for the blue one when i get them sprayed :-)

New front is close to being sorted :-)

So. Called it a day. If isnt too hot tomorrow ill fit up the lockset and try finish the front end.

Aim for mods for the car is: (on a budget!)
Wheels - 17/18's decent width
Tyres - decent brand or semi slicks to suit
Suspension - coilovers, swaybars, any bushes it needs
Interior - stripped with just dash pad there, half cage, bucket seat, steering wheel/boss kit, fire extinguisher.
External - sideskirts, match paint, roll guards, gt wing, tow hooks.
Driveline - exhaust, intake, extractors, manual, higher ratio lsd diff.
So if anyone has cheap stuff send me a pm please :-) i dont have money for mods for a couple of weeks but ill be interested to see what you have to help out :-)

Cheers guys/girls hopefully this will be the start of a fun build haha

By the way... Any info/suggestions will be much appreciated!
I will be re-reading everyone elses track threads to try get suspension tips and info etc :-)

Well done Aaron.

You will love working on the track car for the first few months, as you make huge leaps forward in terms of track prep for very little cash spent.

Good work on the radiator support repair. They are flimsy and only serve to give you somewhere to bolt everything too.

You could ditch the bonnet hinges and just run pins front and rear- would make it easy to work on later on.

Keen to keep an eye on what you are doing- always looking for things I can improve on my car. And I mean it, I am seriously looking at how I can get over to Wakefield park for another run. I have a wedding in NSW in April. I am slowly drip feeding hints to the wife that we should tow the car across and just 'make a short stop' on the way.

Ok got the catback off the rolled car and have chopped off bent section. When i get my welder back i will re-do the bent section and a new tip. (havent welded in years so could be messy) should let some sound out anyway :-)
Pulled the under dash lock assembly out of the trim aswell so i can put in this car with the lockset so i can actually get back into the boot to get my tools out haha
Also have an emv from the rolled one ill be throwing that in to seeif i can get a demister for now until i get a hot rod heater setup so i can turf all the heater assembly.

So true!

You will find that even without spending any money on the engine or box it will be a half-decent track car with some basic mods and a bit of weight out.

Assuming little or no engine mods and staying auto for the time being i would do the following

1) decent-sized trans cooler
2) adjust "kickdown" cable (its not but you know what i mean) for tightest shifts
3) get a manualiser box - this makes a big difference! Either try contacting Cameron Laufer here or email me, i can show you how to make one (simple to make and connect)
4) Try disconencting the MAF sensor and see how the car performs (keep and eye on any pinging or overheating cats). If all is good you will get a decent performance bump for nothing. Before i wired up an Adaptronic i did several events with no MAF at all, and no ill effects other than more fuel usage
5) TT or JZA80 4.08 LSD
6) Assuming they are in ok condition, the airbag suspension will be fine to start with, just lower it a little (not too much!), get a wheel alignment with as much camber/castor as you can and fit the "Trackday" jumper in the diagnostics box

Brakes kinda depends which way you want to go. I would look at TT brakes with decent pads/fluid as being the minimum. Whether you want to start with this or go straight to Celsior 4-pots or JZA80 "big brakes" is up to you, but you would save yourself upgrading twice

Wheels i would stick with 17s as when you start shopping around for decent street or track tyres 17s are a lot more reasonably priced than 18s

Thanks Phil :-)
Trans cooler i have a large davies craig one i was using as a p/s cooler on my blue one i will grab a smaller one for blue one.
Kickdown i will look into
Wheels im going to try get 17's but will have to see what comes up cheap. I may look into falcon alloys.
Airbags. Im giving back to Daniel as that helped in getting car for a lower price
Cats i was thinking of gutting just incase they were blocking up.
Ill be getting a tradeplate and drive it up the road to work during the week so i can do a real good service and check out underneath and bushes on a hoist and swap over airbags.
Brakes well i will se what i can find for cheap but i may do a few laps on the standard ones so i know when i upgrade that i can feel any difference.
So the car will run ok with the maf disconnected? I know alot of cars surge around and rough idle.

Good ideas so far. I'll be following this build as there may be things I can pick up. All the stuff done to my V8 is bolt on, and it's now making 180rwkw. Nice torque as well. Weight reduction is the key, I think.

Ditch the seats and get a cheap set of JZA80 seats
Air intake is a good cheap mod.
Extractors and you're in the process of getting the cat back sorted. If you can't stretch to get an torsen, just get a cheap tt open wheeler, they're better geared for acceleration.

Let me know exactly how you go with getting a manualiser box too.

Thanks mate, yeah i started stripping rear this afternoon when the sun had less bite and wasnt steaming hot with 98% humidity in a car out in the sun lol
So got rear of interior pulled out, boot is stripped other than stacker as i will be hooking up emv tomorrow to see if stacker works to be able to start selling stuff off to help pay for upgrades.
All locks have now been changed over and it now locks! Haha
Couldnt find my file and had my die grinder at work so couldnt get bonnet adjusted.
Installed bfi off the other car, so have a perfect condition, unmolested airbox/air intake to it for sale. Sounds a bit louder now with intake haha brother has template for bfi enclosure so ill be tracing that tomorrow :-)
Put leather rear seats in my blue car aswell which looks good :-)
Checked levels and coolant is so dirty it isnt funny so will definitely be doing a flush and all fluids this week. Noticed radiator is slightly bowed and can see fractures in top tank so may try find a cheap alloy radiator soon just incase,

Seat in blue one

Ok yesterday drilled out lh bonnet hinge holes. Was able to get bonnet to sit straight, though rhf sits up about 3mm more. So i got the bonnet pins on. With the twisted rad support made it a bit annoying to get it to sit right.

Also done a quick oil flush and replacement with some fully synthetic 10w30
Also flushed coolant and put it back to red/orange coolant.

Not much has happened last two days been raining and have had training in sydney.
Tried my emv in it but screen wouldnt turn on lol
Pulled off top section of emv (switches for demisters) and wired that in to control fan motor for demister, blinkers/hazards werent working and found the harness i had from the earlier year model car had a different connector (shown in pic) was thinking i was going to have to rewire the connector to get indicators i looked at it and noticed the connector was the same but had an extra empty row on it. So i cut the side off the connector and the other sides locator slide tabs and bam! Fits in the other connector! So now i have front and rear demisters, and blinker/hazards :-)
Anyone have pics of custom sheet dash for centre console? I will have to make one.
Also have some tein superflex coilovers i will be getting off daniel next week 14f 8r rates.

Ok checked fuses, bypassed fuel ecu and still had no power to the fuel pump.
I looked at the alarm in it which i have nothing for and i hit it with a spanner while saying "i bet its you!" well as soon as i hit it i could hear the fuel pump priming haha
Soo.. Decided to cut it out of the car... Normally easy job...
Well this one has had multiple alarms so wiring cut, split, mutilated everywhere and it was all twist and tape!!!
so chopped all the old and new alarm wiring out. Reconnected and soldered original loom back together.
Bam car starts fine now! Alarm has now been safely disposed of not to annoy another car again haha

Interior is stripped.. So if anyone if after anything let me know!
Found a bit of a funny problem too.. Started blowing smoke on startup.. Now it is whitish but doesnt smell like oil and its not coolant.. Found some dripping oil from the manifold.... P/s fluid.. Yep the idle up solenoid for p/s is leaking internally and getting oil sucked into engine! Anyone have one of these??

Hmmmm... Trouble!!!! :-(

Cusco half cage.... When sat in right position on wheel arch, sits like this! So looks like im going to have to box it up, cut the lower mounts off and weld to the box. And i can add more cage later when money allows..

Roughly where seat will fit. Ill be looking for a fixed back of some description for a decent price..

You can get your entry level fixed back seats for around $400. That is all I have. Mine is a Cobra Monarco, but most of the seat manufacturers do an entry level seat.

If you keep your eye on Gumtree, ebay, my105 etc they often pop up on the cheap.

WIth the cage (bit hard as I cant see how the rest is sitting) but when you box the bottom think about how you are going to add more cage later on. You need to be able to get to the top of the main hoop to weld your front legs if you decide to fit them. I would suggest some arrangement that will allow you to cut the hoop from the box, cinch the legs in with a ratchet strap so they drop down the inside of the box. This will give you about 6 inches (if the box is the same height as you have the plate now) of room to get between the roof and the top of the cage. It is how I put my cage together after advice from the cage designer.

Im bidding one a used sparco one on ebay at the moment. I wasnt able to find one on gumtree close. If it goes over my budget i may just wait and get a new one i have seen them sparco basic fixed back for 450. I couldnt find any cobra ones maybe i didnt put in the right search options haha

With the cage and the dropping if you drop it down to weld on the front arms did you do the front box afterwards that the front arms sit on? If you done the front box first it wouldnt have the room to drop down?
I was thinking with the rear plates that cusco put on the wheel arch will this be a strong enough point to add things later? I thought you had to go for the top of the strut or chassis rail?
I was going to add a crossbar at the back between the rear mounted points so i could attach the harness to..

Oh and ben do you have any specs i should start from for a wakefield wheel alignment? I know anything thats different between the two cars will affect it but just wondering on what camber and toe settings i should start with. Ill try get it up to work and on the wheel aligner when i get the coilovers in.

Wheel alignment:

as much camber as possible- about 2 to 2.5 degrees with the stock arms etc, dependin on ride height. I go a lot milder on the rear, maybe 1-1.5 degrees with my staggered fitment. If I had the same tyres all round, I would try the same 2.5 deg at the rear.

Ride height- I had it way to low in the early days. After speaking to suspension guys I set the ride height to 350mm front and 340 rear. (CWG) this gave me a small amount of front to rear rake which is good for downforce among other things. I think it was a good balance between ride height and desired camber.

Toe is kinda personal- I like upto 4mm total toe out on the front, and 2mm total toe in at the rear. This gives a nice turn in, and helps tame the rear a little as well. It in not too twitchy on the straights. Any more toe out and I found it starts to steer itself on the straight.

Goes without saying get all the castor you can, but you need to give up a little to get usable camber.

I cant remember about the cage. I think I did the boxes first, so I could piece the rest of the cage together, and then had to pull the legs in to drop it off the boxes. I welded the underside of all the joins first. Oh yeah- when it comes time to weld the cage do a little on one side and then let it rest, then do a little on the other side, rest etc. Very easy to pull the cage out of alignment by welding one side too much. Diagonal string lines help keep an eye on it.

Thanks ben! I knew it was toe out front and toe in rear but i didnt know it was that much total toe! I was thinking 1 maybe 2 degrees on front haha. Ill have to input the settings into the wheel alignment machine. Now from memory in your thread you had to elongate the camber hole didnt you to get a degree more negative camber?
Ill have to do some practicing welding before i attempt the cage i havent welded in years lol

Hey Aaron, I'm not in a club yet but I want to join one with other soarers, so it would be good to join the same one.
I'm still a couple of months away from the track so at the rate your going you'll beat me.
Your project is looking good man. Even know I don't post alot I am on this sight 10 times a day. Please keep the updates coming, it's great reading.

Thats cool clayton. I havent "joined as yet" but ive been to alot of circuit club days and everyone there is usually pretty helpful. I usually turn up to watch then end up helping random guys fix their cars haha.
Mine will still be a month or so just because of money. I just want to make sure i start with a few things before i hit the track for safety. But with wakefield you can do speed off street days which you basically get a wakefield licence and just rock up and pay entry fee anyone can go. Only problem is these are normally during the week so have to take time off work to do so and same with anyone else to help.

Ok im looking at this battery relocation kit i have for it. The way im looking at bolting it in is the top section sits where seat was and bolts down to original nut hole.
Now where the bottom bracket sits doesnt go anywhere near a threaded hole to bracket off. Can i get away with drilling through floor for this bracket and bolt it to floor with large washers? Here is a pic of the setup..
Ill be looking at getting a odyssey 680 so will be tiny but i still want the box and i just want to know if it will be passable for any cams regulations at a later date? Or would i be better off welding it in?

I will be either mounting an isolator on top of the box or i may run it up and have it on a bracket near where the emv sat..

Id also be keen to know what club you guys join. My car is still awhile away from being ready. But when it is will be good to be out there with soarers.

im going to join circuit club. there isnt really any joining as such from what i can see, but a book in and come on the day and follow their safety rules etc and they will run the day.. i can see myself being in the noobs group for a while, i have raced karts for a while but not a proper car on the track until i get used to it haha
http://www.circuitclub.com.au/page/home-page
battery box installed. now to run wires and isolator etc, and i will have to sort out fuel pump wiring as i am going to run it off a switch as i know soarers are pretty bad for fuel pump ecu's dying haha

Aaron, I'm quite confident the powersteering idle up valve is dead allowing the fluid to go into the intake. What you can do is remove the valve completely and plug it up. You don't really need it. I've removed mine (except mine is a LS400 which I believe uses the same pump and valve) and no issue what so ever. The only side effect is "No more smoke on start up".

I've just done the same with the A/C Aaron. Phil Gibson had his without aircon before he fit the charger so he will know. I'll ask him on his thread later.

Ok.. Just measured up a/c belt needed and if measurements are right will need a 6pk1595 or 6pk1600.. Price one up tomorrow.
Purchased an isolator switch for this beast. Should be here at anytime..
Made some brackets for 13 row trust cooler setup. ($150) ebay a while ago my brother got it and doesnt want to use it so i bought it off him. Will have to maybe change one fitting or just have a bit of excess and loop it haha.
Removed a/c compressor and lines. Only had to bend one to get it out so ill throw that one and put the rest up for sale later.
Swear that the a/c stuff added up to around 15-20 kg!!
Daniel found a power steering switch so that, rear tt brakes and coilovers should be here early next week

Mounted..

A/c out... SO MUCH ROOM FOR ACTIVITIES!!!!

Heh yeah a/c out does get rid of a lot of crap

I should still have the belt i used pre-charger so i'll check what length it was, but from memory youre on teh money with your measurements

Have a look back in my thread for the switch i put in to turn the hydraulic fan to max speed, its an easy, handy mod.

Ah yeah cool so if you need to cool down like an emergency switch? That will be cool i will mate.
Yeah i got a 6pk1600 as they had one in stock and not a 1595, fitted perfect :-)
I was thinking of putting an extra thermo at the front in case its a hot day help cooling a bit.
I have to let my bank account relax for a bit and ill start getting that stuff.
What are the rules with the holes in the parcel shelf? Can i just cover the main holes or do i have to cover all them little ones right near the windscreen too?
A mate has also said he is a part of a hillclimb club in queanbeyan so when i get a trailer i might get some wooden spoons in that too for a bit of fun haha :-)

Just checked my old belt it was a 1615 but then i had a larger alt pulley so that sounds about right

The stock hydraulic fan pushes a lot of air when on max speed - they are a pretty good thing i reckon so i dont think you;ll have any cooling issues. The only reason i got rid of mine was because it didnt mount to the alloy radiator
