Love the diffuser Aaron, what is Aluminium composite?
Any chance of a video of the sound of that exhaust?
Did you accidentally buy a DC TIG instead of ACDC?
If your mig has a spool gun connection you can use that but it's pretty hard to master. You have to push forward into the weld & it spits a lot.

Aluminium composite is a plastic covered in thin alloy. Alot of signage places use it as it can be lighter but stronger than thin aluminium as it doesnt flex as much due to the layers. I actually seen alot of the top time attack builds have used it aswell. You can also bend it, though not as sharply. Or you can use a router cut a line mostly into it. Bend it around then pop rivet angle to it to make it stronger and a cleaner bend so dont see edges. I didnt habe a router so just cut it all.
I made a noob error. I thought since mig died I might get a mig/tig/arc combo. And dont get me wrong its a great welder I just cant do ac tig.. I should have bought an ac/dc tic, and a separate mig. Hindsight.. ill get a video of exhaust and upload it later just sitting there... being a race car cant just take it for a spin where I am to get one haha

Ok so have a bit more done, primered the front bar, side skirts and the boot.
Made up a crappy sideskirt heat shield out of small bit of alloy I had there, hopefully it works ok and doesnt melt any paint around it haha.
Today my 25mm front guards turned up, second hand but got them cheap, few scratches and small stress cracks I'll fix up later when I get them ready for paint. fitment isnt too bad though pretty happy for the price.

Ok, bit of a quick write up. Went out to Marulan driver training centre on friday for a shake down. everything went well! didnt have any dramas. First couple of sessions I went out and bed brakes in and tested suspension and checked temps and generally how the car ran... as I have only driven it 100m or so haha
So first few sessions was taking it pretty easy and had bumper off just in case as the run offs at marulan are very rocky.
Went out with the beginner groups and was quickly told to go up into the fast group as was getting the second fastest times of the day. Only thing lapping faster (.5-1 second per lap) was a full built 98 wrx with 2.5l stroker and every whiteline bit of gear known to man on advan semis, which will be helping out at targa tas at the start of next year.
With the cars handling. One corner (turn 3 rh turn) was very understeer prone and if taken too aggressive would easily turn into oversteer, but most corners felt slightly understeer so didnt attack them as hard as I think I could have. Being first day out wasnt too worried on suspension setup and changes or tyre pressures, was running 28psi cold, next time I go there may drop to 24-25 I think, try get some better grip on the toyos as only the inner edges were getting to 60 degrees and the outers 40ish. Last corner was extremely oversteer prone had to run about 1/4 throttle till was on the straight section as you can see in one video chasing the r32gtst4 I was a bit eager to try get him down the straight and ended up sideways instead haha.
Only problems of the day... was some brake fluid around the reservoir and seemed to be coming out of vacuum hose as was all over the vacuum hose edges. I thought I may drop the level slightly as I over filled it to help stop the notorious brake level warning if it isnt overful. Next session out wasnt a drop anywhere which was fantastic. The the rear rotors got pretty blue (stock tt ones) so will definitely be needing some supra upgrade there to cope with longer heat cycles.
And the only other problem I had was anything under 50l of fuel would get surge when doing the slower left-rights. So I will be needing to get the surge tank plumbed up asap so I dont have to run a full tank all day.
The only other thing I had a drama with was my gopro ended up having no sound for the day which was a pain as the car sounded sooooo goood!! (got told it was the best sounding car per hp it makes out there) haha. Tracked it down to a 3.5mm aux extension cable between the rode microphone and the goro has decided to break, possibly from cable tying it to the roll cage... either way I will get a better quality one of them too.
Have booked into Wakefield with Circuit Club for the october long weekend (6th) to set some base times and see how it takes wakefield. I will probably just run same wheel alignment and have under aero off again just to get some confidence in the track and car there so im not getting out there and destroying things..

few pictures of the day

couple of videos, without sound, and one taken from outside from a mate who was the driver of the sil80

in car, towards the end of the day practicing heel and toe downshifting more than trying to get a fast time haha
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptOx0V2tHk8

chasing mates gtst4, mates wrx was behind I was getting fuel surge so was hard to get the power out of corners in this session to overtake so I backed off to let the wrx through, but he wanted me to keep going so we could try race haha
also shows how easy it was to lock rears up without heel and toe..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oq0OscC0R8

here is the outside view of that last one. If you listen carefully you can hear mine before the wrx. Alot of people say they can only hear the wrx so they mustnt have decent speakers to hear the difference haha

Great progress mate. Have a serious look at suspension settings at Wakefield. May as well get it handling right, from the beginning.

I reckon you need a plywood front splitter, STAT! Costs bugger all, and could be made to work with that bumper pretty easily. Even if you do not get some downforce, you will get a meaningful decrease in drag. (You will get downforce, I can assure you)

Might help with the understeer (depending on if the understeer was on high or low speed corner)

Yeah for wakefield ill be more into what settings are. Ill put slightly more camber in and fiddle around with tyre pressures and shock stiffness. Ill try make a quick cheap one out of ply for the day see how it goes. Then make a better one later. Even if it is a flat undertray its better than nothing. What thickness do you think would be enough without being too heavy, but rigid enough to cope with any aero load applied? Have to check out bunnings see what sizes they have. If I lower it I'll have to make some ends for the trailer ramps too
Ben, what settings did you say you went to for wheel alignment that day. I remember you said you went close to stock but slightly more camber but I cant remember the figures..

Oh sorry ben yeah the main understeer I had was on slow to medium corners. Highest speed I got to down the straight was topping out third. Same on back section. Never got into 4th. As you said my tyre pressures were probably too high so that could be part of that. And only aero I had on was the wing incase I went off getting used to car and track.

my tyre pressures on the fastest lap were 33psi hot.

I had 2 deg camber up front and 1 degree down the back.

I had zero toe at the front, and 2mm toe in each side down the back (4mm total toe in)

My ride height measurements will make no sense to you, however they translate to about 350 CWG front and 340 CWG rear.

Ahhh k cool ill get the front down 20mm and rear down probably 15mm and I'll align to get something close to them specs... will be a good start anyway. Way I had it I had 0.5 degree toe in at front and rear, I started with 1 degree toe in in the rear but the drive up the road the rear end kept bouncing with the locked diff, taking some toe out stopped that. Ran 1.3 degree negative camber in rear and almost 2 in front.
I got most of the fittings tonight to set up the surge tank. Just waiting on one bulkhead fitting and an anti drain back valve to go onto the pump.
Had to move where I had fitted surge tank further to drivers side due to the extra length of the filter and Valve. I ended up spending a bit more money to get bulkhead fittings so the fuel hoses arent just going through a grommet. Least I know they shouldnt rub through.

So yesterday had the first wakefield track day with the beast. Got out there nice and early and done the track walk before the drivers briefing, was more of a track drive than a walk as drove to each corner. Being first track day I was put into beginners group which I was happy with. Got out there and had a few slow laps to check a few things make sure the brakes were fine etc as swapped the rears to the supra brakes off blue one the night before. All was testing ok so got into it. Pretty quickly realized I was alot faster than the entire group and was constantly stuck behind people waiting for them to let me past, I could have overtaken but held to the rules and waited for them to wind their windows down to point me past. Everything tested ok from that session, still some understeer issues but all brakes and temps were spot on, was a really really hot and humid 30 degrees and car didnt get above 102-103 degrees for both oil and water temps which was great. Means if its really really hot I can still take the bonnet tray off the vent. Also still havent properly ducted the front end.
Anyway was moved up to class c.
Checked temps straight after the first session and was maxing out at 45 degrees and 59 on inner edges and pressures were at 35psi hot. Dropped the pressures 2psi to see if made much of a difference.
2nd session went out and was a little less understeer but tyres still dont feel the best, pretty uneventful this one as was catching people again as some others were moved up a class too so would drop back to get room then catch them half way through the lap so cruised till could get by. Was running 20l of fuel in tank and was getting no surge so good to see the surge tank has fixed that! Also found with a good entry onto the straight Im topping 4th out and hitting rpm limiter for about a second through the kink before hitting the brake for corner two.. So cant wait to replace ecu and raise it even a couple of hundred rpm. I tried going to 5th but with no power mods it just sat there and then Id have to down change another gear and lose time in 2 shifts I didnt need.
Found that I could hold the fish hook and last corner in third and just use the torque to pull out and saved a gearchange aswell.
Tyre pressures hot were 31 all round and also the temps of the tyres evened out across the tyre to around 56-59 degrees so now I was using more tyre.
3rd session I was about the same speed and found if I tried faster through corners the understeer would try send me out too far so was really focusing on trying different lines to see if could combat that but I literally was within .3 second all day if I was in the open without traffic and with no excessive understeer to ruin a corner and a lap.
Towards the end I got a better line through fish hook and didnt wash enough speed off for the kink onto back straight so understeered off onto the dirt and kept it ok, Session was over when I got back down straigt so done cool down and headed back to pits. Thats where I noticed a smell and mate noticed some oil under car. Popped bonnet and found with the off that the swaybar had extended further with suspension travel and must have slid across in bush and smacked a large dint into the oil filter and split it. Luckily I was keeping an eye on pressures and temps and didnt budge coming in. and when checked was down 400ml which was lucky. So decided to eat some lunch, head back home and get the spare filters I have and bring back. By the time it was all swapped over and cleaned I had missed two sessions, asked the person in charge what was up next, he said my class c was lining up ready to go out so ran back and got it out...
Took it easy onto next session and first few laps were making sure had cleaned all the oil residue off brakes and the tyres. Then got into it. Had a few good tussles with some cars and was thinking wow these cars are faster this session, pulled in after session was done and mate had told me he called it wrong and I was in class B! and that my class was just going out!! had a laugh ad said was much better as were around the same speed. but checked the oil filter and was ok so headed out with my class again.
This session was pretty much getting the same times when out free by myself and front tyres were getting more and more understeer, was just getting much cleaner lines to help the times.
got a little too close to a ripple strip and curb hopped it a bit and thought ahhh better go double check the oil filter, as was paranoid. Got back to pits and there you have it, another dinted filter. So looks like I am chasing an oil filter relocation kit and a main priority and possibly better tyres as these ones are starting to get old and just think they hated the hot day.
Decided to quit while I was ahead, There was only 2 more sessions anyway and I didnt want to risk blowing the motor so packed it up and watched a bit then headed.
Was sooooooOOOooooOOoooo good to get out finally. Was damn hot though so really took it out of me. Was thinking why the hell did I take out the aircon... lol
Learned alot from the day, Driving technique has improved alot with heel and toe etc can see where I need to improve car with handling and found a few small things that need doing, mainly being;
Oil cooler relocation
Fuel cover plate on parcel shelf fell off under cornering in heat so will need to screw it in.
fuel cap seems to weep under high load corners so seal is probably gone.
sorting out some new or newer tyres
Sorting out a front splitter setup to try help the front understeer.
Will upload pics and vids soon so feel free to hurl any coaching tips at me haha

here is an incar lap. will do the one with slides etc later, didnt slide out much to be honest as once I knew where tyres would brake loose I just stayed at that point or tried slower with better lines.

Good to hear you drove onto the trailer at the end of the day. Pretty much how I define a successful track day too. LOL.

As I said previously, a front splitter and undertray will really help with the understeer in the quicker corners. I only saw the one at Neil's up on the shelf, but it has little diffusers in it which is a bonus. I reckon you should grab it and make it fit.

Did anyone take pics of you going into the corners where you were understeering? We might be able to see if the tyres were 'rolling over' causing the understeer and greasy feel. This can be sorted with more camber if it is the case.

Any chance it is the speed limiter you are hitting on the straight? Not the rev limiter.

Yeah be seeing the big guy tomorrow so see what goodies I can go broke with haha hopefully its pretty close and fits up or can come close.
I do have some pics I just uploaded them.. through the fish hook seems to be leaning a bit on front... seems ok when braking so may try stiffen up front shocks next time aswell.. will either make it better or worse lol

You may be right ben it may be limiter I was just thinking it was rev limiter as was seeing the shift I pretty much at redline when it happened.. and in my blue one when I hit the speed limiter would give you whiplash.. and this car has well... nowhere near the power so alot smoother cut haha.. may need to find some cheap 2uz coils and get this haltech in. Or find a cheap rsm to work for now and then sell it after.

ok.. been a while since an update.. sooo...
wakefield, got out there 6.12.14 with the advan a050 tyres on, another 32 degree day and extremely muggy, ended up having massive storms in the arvo so was interesting to get car on and off the trailer in pretty much a typhoon haha! Managed a best time of 1:12.22, wasnt the best day, many cars breaking down or spinning causing alot of yellow and red flags which meant a whole heap of cool down or warm up laps going back onto the track. also was having brake fade problems they were just random sometimes would work fine and others not so had no confidence in braking zones which kept the times back a bit. Ended up finding the wilwood calipers had decided to crap themselves and seize the outer right hand pistons. had to cut the day short as that caliper ran out of brake pad, lhf and rhf inner were around 70-80% left and outer right was almost metal to metal.. So alot was wasted in temrs of time chasing but was still a pretty good day overall. Had a small incident from getting waved through by a fucus then she pulled onto the apex as I was going through and smashed a few things in the front left. Car still drove alright so luckily only cosmetic stuff affected, still a pain as I wouldnt have tried to overtake a the fish hook ecxept for the fact she slowed down and waved myself and two other cars through... but she didnt mean it must have just had a brain fart and apologized straight after. Will need some fibreglass repair as very cracked and fractured on that corner now, glued mirror back, replaced the smashed internals of the aerocatch.

Went through racechrono data and added up fastest sector times and says with how i was driving on the day a 1:10.20 is capable. So now has me wanting to fix the few things up to get a few tenths and chase a 1:09!!
few pics of the day..

Got a couple of goodies to go towards the turbo kit of Neil the man.. Holset hx35w with 12cm2 rear and 7 fin front impeller wheel. should be ok to make roughly 270-300rwkw hopefully and be reliable and responsive.

Also off Neil a crown 1uz fan idler assy so I can delete the hydrofan to allow room for the turbo with the angled radiator..

taken the wilwoods off and have gone back to supra fronts off blue one (poor car has became a parts car!) and also Greg from brakes direct hooked me up with some project mu club spec front pads in time for the weekend!!
On sunday went to MDTC as some mates were going there to try out the new longer track (rear corner).
Day wasnt too bad, I used the r888s for the day so I could save advans for wakefield. Instantly the understeer in and oversteer out had come back hardcore! so the r888 tyres i had are major contributing factor to that. Just found the limits and trialled different cornering lines and also found staying in third and labouring through the slower sections was the exact same times as going down another gear and then have to change again out of corner! With these tyres on the best I could manage was a 49.54 lap, with a 49.21 my optimal lap time going by sector times.

Only thing I noticed for the day that is bugging me, is there is a bit of a noise under braking and I cant quite figure out what it is, very loud and only under harsh braking. It sounds like front left but possible rear.. hard to tell as echos and is very loud and doesnt help having helmet on lol! in that video you can hear it best after the lap is completed braking for corner one again..
The supra brake front actually outbrakes the wilwoods by a long mile! They have a more instant feel and can easily lock up the fronts, the wilwoods you would hit them really hard and only back off if they locked... these you pretty much lock up the front first hit, but once you learn to gently ease it on to start you can get muuuch better braking!! So other than that it was a fun day. Will look into that noise... Anyone have any ideas feel free to throw them at me! will get car up on stands, its been raining every arvo since afterwork so havent got a chance to.

My thoughts too. But since they failed everyone seems to have someone they know who they failed on and brake specialists laugh when you say you bought wilwoods... amazing when you research it and find everyone say they are good.. maybe they are the lucky ones and not many people actually mention they failed on the internet... ah well expensive mistake...

More for show then go I would assume then?

Has the Haltech Sport 2000 been wired in/installed? If so, how did you go with it on the V8? I'm looking now at the 2000 for my car, as there's only so far you can go with an e-manage, specially with larger injectors.
