Torsen diff, which I have to say absolutely transformed the car and made it MUCH more responsive into, through and out of corners. No wonder Ben has been getting so much speed out of his car
People keep telling me I am wrong. I reckon the Torsen is a great diff for a circuit car.
Great leaps forward. Quite scared for my WP lap time now...when are you going back???
Dry sump is a big spend. I can buy three engines for one dry sump system, so I couldn't justify it. I still haven't installed the accusump either...

Are there 2 Ben Lipman's? Because the other one read my post in the Post Up Your Lap Times thread and added a leaders board, just for me. Your medication must be really good

Oh. I thought that was for your previous lap time at SMP. It has been a big week. Every night this week I have been in the shed working on the Soarer - the red one though this time. Race car is in the other shed still untouched from the july outing.

Finally got around to stripping the engine down. Lots of damage in the bottom end, but fortunately nothing wrong with the heads or any components in the top end. The head gaskets were completely intact, so no issues there. No evidence of running lean at all - no burnt pistons, no holes in them, nothing. Even the No. 1 piston, which is the destroyed one, was intact at the top, complete with rings in perfect condition:
The bottom half of that piston tells a different story though:
And here is its matching conrod:
Piston No. 2 also copped some damage, as did the big end:
So the 1-2 crank journal is well and truly buggered:
But also, main bearing No. 2 had a spin, damaging the block and the crank shaft:
So if anyone owns a boat, I have a free anchor for you.
On top of all this, when I pulled it off the engine the oil pump was seized. This, I think, is more a result of the issue than the cause of it. It is probable it has some bearing material in there jamming it up or something. I'm going to pull it apart to check later.
Current theory is a combination of oil getting too hot and oil surge caused the problem, both of which can be addressed by use of a dry sump system.

I'm not sure how to take that...

PS do you do hot laps?
Well, if you were to fly all the way from NZ Mike, and pay the appropriate fee, I'm sure we could arrange strapping you into a passenger seat. I'm pretty sure Ben and Aaron would be up for that too - what could be more fun than scaring the sh!t out of someone...

Haha I havent got a passenger seat yet so mo passenger sessions for me yet. With the torsen did you find it would keep unloading through hard corners? I think i may be popping a tyre off the ground through the fish hook and the car starts spinning the inside tyre... shouldnt happen with my power level and tyres... might need to try stiffen it up further somehow..

If you are lifting the rear tyre Aaron, then the car might already be too stiff at the rear, too soft at the front, or your spring/shock combo does not have enough droop to allow the tyre to remain in contact with the road.

I agree with Ben mate.

Are you going to buy another 1UZ and bolt your good bits onto it?
I already have a spare engine, and an extra crank shaft. So in theory that bit is easy. Yep, the dry sump setup would be expensive, but worth it in the long run. If I'm going to do that though, I'm thinking it'll also probably be worth spending an extra $1400 or so on stronger rods and forged pistons. As I've run out of money this year it is all an "on paper" exercise at the moment.

I should have posted this up a while ago, but just didn't get to it yet...
Official autopsy results are in for the engine failure. The good news is, as it turns out, the issue was not one of oil feed.
The bad news is, the bottom end is still rooted.
According to the metallurgist engineer fellow, brought in by AGM Engineering to analyse what had happened (which I very much appreciate), the root cause of the problem was the engine overheating at some point.
Keen observers will remember that at Wakefield Park (the previous round to the engine blow-up) we had a problem with the thermostat, which saw the engine get hot enough to make the Motec drop it into limp mode.
The metallurgist is convinced the overheating caused detonation, prior to the Motec shutting things down. That detonation caused enough of a bang prior to pistons/rods being in the correct position in the cylinder, thereby causing a shock through the big ends and bashing the bearings about.
Once the bearings were out of shape, it was only a matter of time before they gave out by sticking to the crank or spinning. As we broke the diff in the following race that weekend, the engine didn't have enough time to destroy itself.
But it had the required time at SMP once we had the new diff installed.
Ben, I don't know if you ever diagnosed the fault with your bearing failure, but this info may assist.
What the guy also said was that whilst the 1UZ is a strong engine that can handle heaps of power through the standard bottom end, that really only counts for putting it on a dyno or running it down the quarter mile. For the kind of stuff I've been doing to it, we really need to move to stronger rods and forged pistons.
So that's the next logical step. The heads and everything from the top end of the engine are undamaged, so we just need a new bottom end with forged internals to make it go again. And a new oil pump, as the old one did suffer from a bit of jamming up with bearing material.

Let me know if you want me to post this/link the thread on facebook.
I will chuck it up on my page as a link to the forum. If you want it posted in the groups, you will need some form of contact details (email or phone) and a price.
Sad to see this sold. I doubt the next owner will be as much of a top bloke as you have been through the years.

As long as you'll have me, I'm happy to keep the thread going. The next adventure is not a Soarer, but I feel kinda comfortable amongst the Soarer crowd.
Meanwhile I do need to clear the garage out. Offers considered on the Soarer. It'll be a bargain for whoever buys it...
