Agreed I think it takes a certain wheel design & overall diameter to do the Soarer justice. I relearned that the hard way last time around..! Whereas BBS, no matter size or style etc. just work seamlessly. As you said, timeless. |

The RG in 17" really are made for these cars, certainly a nice natural progression from the original optional 16" BBS. I find Imgur for image hosting particularly good, especially for resizing photos to be able to use on these forums. |

There we go! She's a fine example. What are the specs on the BBS? I just purchased a set for myself this evening that I've been eyeing off. |

| Those BBS are timeless. Very nice. i put a set of Lexus GS300 "Machine Tourmaline" on a few years ago. They look far better on the soarer than the GS300 me thinks. They could be just a tad wider, but regardless when i stand on the loud pedal there isnt much that will keep the traction. The GS350 FSport rims you mentioned....to do the Soarer justice with width, you'll need the later release, they are a tad wider and only come in a 19" (the 18s arent wide enough)and a 275 on the rear. My above tourmalines are 18's and are perfect, i cant vouch for the 19's on a Soarer, although i have considered it. They are beautiful rims. Yes they can be staggered and are availablein a couple of widths, just depending on the year of the GS350 FSport. Apols for the house reflection in the BG, its not a sideswipe The last pic is the GS350F Sports. Just beautiful. Id put them on the Soarer in a flash, but then my GS350 and the Soarer would have the same wheels. Cant have my toys in the same shoes. Im loving your thread, many thanks

Thanks for having a read so far Mark. Very clean JZZ30 you have there, the wheels compliment it well! I have to admit, that Lexus have some fantastic OEM wheels on offer from the likes of the IS & GS models, as above. If wheel size wasn't an issue, the factory BBS from the ISF or RC are plain awesome.

| The ball is now rolling again - OEM parts order from JP has been confirmed, consisting of the water pump replacement & everything else needed to complete the remainder of the major service + some extras. Likely to arrive last week of July at this point. New Bendix brake pads & standard replacement RDA rotors also waiting to go on (didn't end up machining the originals after all). Wheels have also been purchased & now patiently waiting for delivery this week. After having no such luck finding a nice used set of IS wheels, for the extra I went ahead on a refinished set of 17" BBS RG, complete with matching BBS wheel nuts. They are a square set of 17" x 8" +35 & while the offsets weren't what I had originally intended, these popped up with the bonus of being refurbished which I know will keep my fussy mind happy. The centres have been done in a satin gold with semi polished lips, which appear to have been done professionally. Some metal spigot rings for them are also on the way. As for tyres, I'm leaning toward the Dunlop SP Sport FM800 which have some consistently good reviews. If all goes to plan I'll have an update on the above by the weeks end.

| BBS RGs are a great wheel, especially being 60mm bore so they fit Toyota hubs properly. I have a set on my UZZ32. |

| Quite a bit to update on since last, to kick it off - brakes, wheels & tyres were sorted late July, early August. Pads & rotors are just some run-of-the-mill Bendix & RDA replacements, but will do fine for a daily driver. The Hel braided lines added in should be more than sufficient. Calipers were repainted again & hardware cleaned up during the process.
Original rear OEM pads taken out, though the fronts had been replaced at some point.
Hel braided lines made up, but not yet fitted.
Got a good deal on some Bridgestone RE003 in a square set of 235 / 45 / 17, tyre fitment looks good.
Wheels mounted with the original BBS wheel nuts & quality alloy hub rings.
Task complete, just need to see them now with the suspension out of 4x4 mode.

| The inevitable water pump replacement was next after a big box of OEM parts landed in early August. This consisted of: 16100-50023 - Water Pump 13540-50030 - Hydraulic Tensioner 13503-50011 - Idler No.2 13505-50022 - Idler No.1 90311-43006 - Front seal 90466-41008 - Radiator clamps x4 96761-35035 - Water inlet O-ring 96711-19010 - Dipstick O-ring 16341-50010 - Water By-pass Gaskets x2 90109-18003 - Crankshaft Pulley Bolt 13568-59045 - Timing Belt 11302-50020 - Lower Timing Belt Cover Gasket 90919-02197 - Ignition Coil x2 04446-24012 - P/S Pump Gasket kit
The pull-down started
Ready for a major clean-up from years of accumulated muck
Wasn't planning on removing the water by-pass, until the water inlet pipe needed to be removed with the help of a vice & hammer. Plenty of crust as seen, well overdue for a clean & gasket change.
Pre-clean of the water pipes
After some elbow grease
New & much needed replacement gaskets
Quick clean of the IACV before applying a new gasket. Rebuild to come soon enough, ain't broken just yet..
And the results after some more scrubbing.. previous LHS cam cover leak wreaked havoc!
New front seal in

| New water pump o-ring
Soaped-up for installation
New & revised water pump
Pump fitted as well as the new idlers
New belt & tensioner to go on
Already spun 2 revolutions by this point, hence installation marks already moved.
New gasket for the lower timing case (upper covers rubbers were still good)
New crank pulley bolt, no reason other than it was cheap enough to just add in
Crank pulley & distributor housings fitted, rotor buttons line up with their corresponding marks also, happy to continue on.
New Denso radiator & alternator imported from the states. The radiator is made in Indonesia, but cannot fault the quality of it, very nice OEM replacement.
Denso alternator re-manufactured in the USA
And this is where it's currently at at the moment. Both the tensioner pulley housing & hydraulic fan pulley housings were also given a good scrub before being reinstalled, now looking acceptable.
Still needing to replace a few small things with new (copper gaskets, sensors etc.) before re connecting the radiator & hydraulic fan just so I am 100% content. Currently have another order from JP due in a couple weeks that will see the job done. Until then, it's more engine bay detailing & some paintwork TLC! |

Mike, unfortunately these had a centre bore of 66.1. They seem to be the perfect specs for a Nissan! But nothing a set of alloy hub rings couldn't fix. They look great on your '32, just a sheer classic of a wheel. |

| Been an eventful few weeks, major service was a success & everything running beautifully. Roadworthy was done mid last week & finally registered again by the weeks end. Only managed one hiccup since the engines initial start-up, which was the new Denso radiator that turned out to be a dud.. so in went the original again & all was good. I'll let the photos tell the rest of the story so far: The latest Toyota order to come in just before completing the service was some odds & ends which consisted of: 09330-00021 – Companion Flange Holding Tool 09843-18020 – Diagnosis Check Wire 90311-43006 – Seal (For Oil Pump) x2 (spares) 44327-12010 – Gasket (For Pressure Hose) x2 90987-02004 – Relay (For EFI) 85910-22040 – Relay Assy, Circuit Opening (For EFI) 89429-24020 – Sensor, Oil Temp (ECT) 90981-12020 – Bulb x2 90981-14004 – Bulb x2
It was cool to see that the diagnosis check wire & SST for the crank pulley were still available, both of which will/have come in handy. In no particular order, the final bits to go on for the next 100k... Easy replacements 1st.. bit overboard buying bulbs from Toyota, but cheap is cheap!
New ignition coils
Last gasket to finish with the hydro fan before the new fluids
New ECT sensor for the radiator
New radiator hose clamps
The failed Denso radiator after the 1st start/coolant bleed, appeared to be an internal leak as seen on either side
Original old faithful to go back in, after yet another partial coolant drain..
The day after, coolant bled (again) & ready for a test run
No leaks overnight & test runs went well. Not forgetting to mention that the new wheels/tyres setup didn't disappoint either - straight & true. So off she went for the roadworthy.. finally!
Booked in a couple days later for registration & she's back on the road again. Was nice to dust the new (old) plates off & fit them at long last. I hadn't washed the car either since purchasing it, as it was pointless while it was off the road accumulating dust & paw prints.. so was great to give the paintwork a good scrub, something it likely hasn't seen in some time! This is where it's at right now, currently undergoing a fairly substantial exterior detail & a good going over with the touch-up pen. So far it's been clay bar'd & already the paint is showing some potential, so I think it's going to clean up to a nice standard. The bumper bars will need to be replaced for a content outcome, but will suffice for now. Mechanically, looks like the drive belt tensioner is due for replacement soon, which I will settle for aftermarket such as a Gates. Also an overdue power steering flush - followed by another pump rebuild pending if the whine is still audible. Other than that, I should be on break from the engine for some time!
Replacement headlights are in also now & leak-free, after being let-down by the previous pair again last downpour. This was a very used & custom set from JP, whereas someone has gone to the grand effort of sanding the "ribbing" off from the inner lens. You can see where they haven't removed it all from the upper corners, however not very noticeable. I knew right off the bat from the auction pics that unfortunately they weren't the "Supermade" lens (which I miraculously got a hold of for my last '31 & sold!) but nonetheless, I'll eventually reseal the original light units & swap & change as I go along, as they're in really good shape aside from the condensation problem. I haven't given much love to the exterior let alone the front-end since posting the original pics, but I am on my way to being happy with it now with the addition of the S2 high beams & griffin emblem back in place. Ideally the plan is to hunt down a non-lip front bumper, but for now I'll either attempt to straighten out the current lip or find a nice replacement until something pops up in the right colour.
Next on the to-do list is a visit from the dent man & a trans fluid flush! Octobers jobs.. |
